Auricular Acupuncture Analgesia in Thoracic Trauma: A Case Report

        Georgios S. Papadopoulos,Petros Tzimas,Antonia Liarmakopoulou,Anastasios M. Petrou 사단법인약침학회 2017 Journal of Acupuncture & Meridian Studies Vol.10 No.1

We report a case of thoracic trauma (rib fractures with pneumothorax and pulmonary contusions) with severe chest pain leading to ineffective ventilation and oxygenation. The patient presented to our emergency department. The patient had chronic obstructive pulmonary disease and was completely unable to take deep breaths and clear secretions from his bronchial tree. After obtaining informed consent, we applied auricular acupuncture to ameliorate pain and hopefully improve his functional ability to cough and breathe deeply. Within a few minutes, his pain scores diminished considerably, and his ventilation and oxygenation indices improved to safe limits. Auricular acupuncture analgesia lasted for several hours. Parallel to pain reduction, hemodynamic disturbances and anxiety significantly resolved. A second treatment nearly a day later resulted in almost complete resolution of pain that lasted at least 5 days and permitted adequate ventilation, restored oxygenation, and some degree of mobilization (although restricted due to a compression fracture of a lumbar vertebra). Nonopioid and opioid analgesics were sparsely used in low doses during the entire hospitalization period. Hemodynamic alterations and anxiety also decreased, and the patient was soon ready to be discharged.

Electroacupuncture for the Treatment of Calcific Tendonitis. A Pilot Study

        Georgios Papadopoulos,Alexandros Mavrodontidis,Antonia Liarmakopoulou,Petros Tzimas,Georgios Angelidakis,Panagiotis Koulouvaris,Anastasios Petrou 사단법인약침학회 2018 Journal of Acupuncture & Meridian Studies Vol.11 No.2

Current treatment for calcific tendonitis consists of arm rest, antiinflammatory medications, and corticosteroid injections. If unsuccessful, a lot of clinicians suggest several physiotherapy modalities, such as shockwave therapy and electrotherapy. The purpose of our study was to assess the efficacy of electroacupuncture, as a substitute for failed medical treatment in calcific tendonitis. In a pilot study, we prospectively followed 10 patients treated with electroacupuncture for calcific tendonitis who failed to respond to medical treatment. Its efficacy was assessed by evaluating the level of pain, the Beck Depression Inventory, the range of active elbow mobility, and by repeated radiological evaluation of the course of calcific deposits. All clinical and radiological observations were recorded before and within 6 months after the onset of treatment. After electroacupuncture treatment (2 Hz, 180 mA for 30–60 seconds at GB21, GB34, LI4, LI 14, LI15, TW5, TW14, Chien Chien SI9, SI12, S37, S38), the visual analog score decreased notably, and the range of motion returned to normal. Radiological evaluation demonstrated almost complete absorption of calcific deposits within 6 months, after treatment. We conclude that electroacupuncture relieved skeletal pain, improved the quality of patient's life, and contributed to total regression of the calcific depositions in followed patients. So, electroacupuncture may be a valuable treatment option for calcific tendonitis, when medical treatment fails to relieve symptoms.

Left Ventricular Hypertrophy and Cerebral Small Vessel Disease: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis

        Andreas Papadopoulos,Konstantinos Palaiopanos,Athanasios P. Protogerou,George P. Paraskevas,Georgios Tsivgoulis,Marios K. Georgakis 대한뇌졸중학회 2020 Journal of stroke Vol.22 No.2

Background and Purpose Left ventricular hypertrophy (LVH) is associated with the risk of stroke and dementia independently of other vascular risk factors, but its association with cerebral small vessel disease (CSVD) remains unknown. Here, we employed a systematic review and meta-analysis to address this gap. Methods Following the MOOSE guidelines (PROSPERO protocol: CRD42018110305), we systematically searched the literature for studies exploring the association between LVH or left ventricular (LV) mass, with neuroimaging markers of CSVD (lacunes, white matter hyperintensities [WMHs], cerebral microbleeds [CMBs]). We evaluated risk of bias and pooled association estimates with random-effects meta-analyses. Results We identified 31 studies (n=25,562) meeting our eligibility criteria. In meta-analysis, LVH was associated with lacunes and extensive WMHs in studies of the general population (odds ratio [OR]lacunes, 1.49; 95% confidence interval [CI], 1.12 to 2.00) (ORWMH, 1.73; 95% CI, 1.38 to 2.17) and studies in highrisk populations (ORlacunes: 2.39; 95% CI, 1.32 to 4.32) (ORWMH, 2.01; 95% CI, 1.45 to 2.80). The results remained stable in general population studies adjusting for hypertension and other vascular risk factors, as well as in sub-analyses by LVH assessment method (echocardiography/electrocardiogram), study design (cross-sectional/cohort), and study quality. Across LV morphology patterns, we found gradually increasing ORs for concentric remodelling, eccentric hypertrophy, and concentric hypertrophy, as compared to normal LV geometry. LVH was further associated with CMBs in high-risk population studies. Conclusions LVH is associated with neuroimaging markers of CSVD independently of hypertension and other vascular risk factors. Our findings suggest LVH as a novel risk factor for CSVD and highlight the link between subclinical heart and brain damage.

Serum Vitamin A and Vitamin E Levels of Growing Lambs Infected or Not with Gastrointestinal Nematodes and Fed a Diet Containing Clinoptilolite

        Arsenos, Georgios,Fortomaris, P.,Giadinis, N.,Roubies, N.,Papadopoulos, E. Asian Australasian Association of Animal Productio 2010 Animal Bioscience Vol.23 No.5

The objective was to assess the concentrations of Vitamins A and E in blood of growing lambs infected or not with gastrointestinal nematodes (GIN) and fed a diet containing clinoptilolite. Twenty-four male lambs were used. A $2{\times}2$ factorial design consisting of two feeding treatments (B and Z) and two levels of parasitic status, infected (I) and uninfected (U) was used. Lambs were randomly assigned to one of four (n = 6), groups: BU (basal-uninfected), BI (basal-infected), ZU (zeolite-uninfected) and ZI (zeoliteinfected). Lambs of groups BI and ZI were infected with a single dose of 15,000 $L_3$ larvae of GIN. Blood samples were collected from individual animals at the start of the experiment and, thereafter, at 15-day intervals. The average blood serum vitamin A and vitamin E, concentration in lambs (mean${\pm}$SD) was 0.25${\pm}$0.090 ${\mu}g/ml$ and 1.59${\pm}$0.769 ${\mu}g/ml$, respectively. Lambs fed Z diet had higher values of vitamin A (p<0.001), but lower values of vitamin E (p<0.01) when compared with those fed B diet.

BIOFUNCTIONALIZATION OF PET/SiO_2 SURFACES FOR SINGLE MOLECULE EXPERIMENTS AND MEDICAL APPLICATIONS

        ALEXANDROS KATRANIDIS,ALEXANDROS MELACHROINOS,PANAGIOTIS G. KARAGIANNIDIS,SYLVIE LOUSINIAN,GEORGIOS PAPADOPOULOS,STERGIOS LOGOTHETIDIS,THEODORA CHOLI-PAPADOPOULOU 성균관대학교(자연과학캠퍼스) 성균나노과학기술원 2011 NANO Vol.6 No.3

PET/SiO2 layers were chemically modified to maintain immobilization of functional single molecules. GFP molecules provide an ideal system due to their stability and intrinsic fluorescence. GFP in vivo biotinylated within its NH2-terminal region and attached on the substrate via the biotin–streptavidin bond was further investigated with confocal microscopy, atomic force microscopy (AFM) and spectroscopic ellipsometry (SE). AFM revealed monolayered donut-like structures representing assemblies of biotin–streptavidin–biotin–GFP immobilized onto PET/SiO_2 surfaces via mPEG. In particular, regions with an approximate height of 12 nm, which approaches the molecular dimensions of the above complex given by molecular modeling, could be detected. The dimensions of the donut-like structures suggest a close-to-each-other positioning of the GFP molecules — which, however, retain their functionality, as evidenced by confocal microscopy.

Trimethylsulfonium Lead Triiodide: An Air-Stable Hybrid Halide Perovskite

        Kaltzoglou, Andreas,Stoumpos, Constantinos C.,Kontos, Athanassios G.,Manolis, Georgios K.,Papadopoulos, Kyriakos,Papadokostaki, Kyriaki G.,Psycharis, Vasilis,Tang, Chiu C.,Jung, Young-Kwang,Walsh, Aro ACS AMERICAN CHEMICAL SOCIETY 2017 Inorganic Chemistry Vol.56 No.11

We report on the synthesis, characterization, and optoelectronic properties of the novel trimethylsulfonium lead triiodide perovskite, (CH3)(3)SPbI3. At room temperature, the air-stable compound adopts a hexagonal crystal structure with a 1D network of face-sharing [PbI6] octahedra along the c axis. UV-vis reflectance spectroscopy on a pressed pellet revealed a band gap of 3.1 eV, in agreement with first-principles calculations, which show a small separation between direct and indirect band gaps. Electrical resistivity measurements on single crystals indicated that the compound behaves as a semiconductor. According to multi-temperature single-crystal X-ray diffraction, synchrotron powder X-ray diffraction, Raman spectroscopy, and differential scanning calorimetry, two fully reversible structural phase transitions occur at -5 and ca. -100 degrees C with reduction of the unit cell symmetry to monoclinic as temperature decreases. The role of the trimethylsulfonium cation regarding the chemical stability and optoelectronic properties of the new compound is discussed in comparison with APbI(3) (A = Cs, methylammonium, and formamidinium cation), which are most commonly used in perovskite solar cells
