The acrosswind response of the downwind prism in a twin-prism system with a staggered arrangement

        Fuh-Min Fang,Perng-Kwei Lei,Cheng-Yang Chung,Yi-Chao Li,Wen-Chin Liu 한국풍공학회 2013 한국풍공학회지 Vol.17 No.3

The flow interaction between two identical neighboring twin square prisms in a staggered arrangement in an open terrain was investigated experimentally. The downwind prism was mounted on a rigid-aeroelastic setup in an open-terrain boundary layer flow to measure its acrosswind root-mean-square responses and aerodynamic damping ratios. By varying the relative location of the upwind prism and the Scruton number associated with the downwind prism, the acrosswind aeroelastic behavior of the downwind prism was analyzed and compared to that of an isolated one. Results showed that the acrosswind root-mean-square response of the downwind prism could be either suppressed or enhanced by the wake flow produced by the neighboring upwind prism. Besides the assessment of the wake effect of the downwind prism, finally, regressed relationships were presented to describe the variation of the aerodynamic damping ratio so as to predict its acrosswind fluctuating response numerically.

Numerical investigations on the along-wind response of a vibrating fence under wind action

        Fang, Fuh-Min,Ueng, Jin-Min,Chen, J.C. Techno-Press 2002 Wind and Structures, An International Journal (WAS Vol.5 No.2

The along-wind response of a surface-mounted elastic fence under the action of wind was investigated numerically. In the computations, two sets of equations, one for the simulation of the unsteady turbulent flow and the other for the calculation of the dynamic motion of the fence, were solved alternatively. The resulting time-series tip response of the fence as well as the flow fields were analyzed to examine the dynamic behaviors of the two. Results show that the flow is unsteady and is dominated by two frequencies: one relates to the shear layer vortices and the other one is subject to vortex shedding. The resulting unsteady wind load causes the fence to vibrate. The tip deflection of the fence is periodic and is symmetric to an equilibrium position, corresponding to the average load. Although the along-wind aerodynamic effect is not significant, the fluctuating quantities of the tip deflection, velocity and acceleration are enhanced as the fundamental frequency of the fence is near the vortex or shedding frequency of the flow due to the occurrence of resonance. In addition, when the fence is relatively soft, higher mode response can be excited, leading to significant increases of the variations of the tip velocity and acceleration.

Improvement of the Thermal Latency for Epoxy-Phenolic Resins by Novel Amphiphatic Imidazole Catalysts

        Fung Fuh Wong,Chun Min Lin,Kun-Lung Chen,Yun-Hwei Shen,Jiann-Jyh Huang 한국고분자학회 2010 Macromolecular Research Vol.18 No.4

Novel amphiphatic imidazole compounds were evaluated as thermal latent catalysts for the polymerization of diglycidyl ether of bisphenol A (DGEBA). Amphiphatic compounds 5-9, two commercially available catalysts 1 and 2, and compounds 3 and 4 were used to cure epoxy resin systems for an investigation of their thermal latency and storage stability. The results from the cure activation energy and viscosity-storage time of the catalysts, the order of thermally latent activity was 3-phenylpropanoic acid (4) > 2-amino-3-phenylpropinoic acid (5) > 2-amino-3-(imidazole-4-yl)-propionic acid (H-His-OH, 8) > N-tert-butoxycarbonyl-histidine (9) > imidazole-4-acrylic acid (6) >3-(imidazole-4-yl)propionic acid (7) > 1-cyanoethyl-2-ethyl-4-methyl-imidazole (2) > 2-ethyl-4-methylimidazole (1) > histamine (3). From the results, the amphiphatic imidazole catalysts 5-9 showed better thermal latency than commercialized catalysts 1 and 2, basic catalyst 3 and acidic catalyst 4. Concerning the glass transition temperature (Tg), the use of amphiphatic imidazole catalysts 5-9 provided complete or near complete curing systems at temperatures ranging from 152-163 oC, which were similar to two commercially available catalysts (151-152 oC, 1 and 2)and histamine (159 oC, 3). On the other hand, the Tg for compounds 4 and 5 could not be detected at 30-300 oC from the temperature scans because of their weak nucleophilicity and low cross-linking reactivity.

Evaluation of Transglutaminase from Pig Plasma on the Quality of Milk Curd

Tseng, Tsai-Fuh,Liu, Deng-Cheng,Chen, Ming-Tsao Asian Australasian Association of Animal Productio 2002 Animal Bioscience Vol.15 No.1

The purpose of this study was to examine the effect of different levels of crude pig plasma transglutaminase (TGase) on the quality of milk curd. Different levels (0, 0.1, 0.2, 0.4, 0.8 and 1.0%) of crude pig plasma TGase was added to fresh milk, individually, and then incubated at $35^{\circ}C$. The time of milk curdling was recorded. Simultaneously, rheological properties, L value and microstructure of the samples were measured and observed. The results showed that the time of milk curdling decreased and the curd strength of milk curd increased with increasing of TGase (p<0.05). The softness of milk curd had the highest value when 0.8% TGase was added (p<0.05). However, L value of milk curds was not significantly different among all treatments. The microstructure of milk curd observed by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) became more dense with TGase level increased.

Porcine Blood Plasma Transgluataminase Combined with Thrombin and Fibrinogen as a Binder in Restructured Meat

        Tseng, Tsai-Fuh,Tsai, Chong-Ming,Yang, Jeng-Huh,Chen, Ming-Tsao Asian Australasian Association of Animal Productio 2006 Animal Bioscience Vol.19 No.7

The purpose of this study was to use pig blood plasma transglutaminase (TGase) combined with thrombin and fibrinogen as a binder, which was applied to restructured meat, and to investigate its effect on the restructured meat quality. Pig meat was obtained 10 h post mortem from a traditional market was ground using a 10 mm aperture plate. A binder admixture was added (TGase:thrombin:fibrinogen mixed as 0.5:1:20 (v/v/v) to which was added 12% of its volume of 0.25 M calcium chloride) at 0, 5, 10, 15 and 20% of meat weight. Measurements included cooking loss, shrinkage rate, shear value, total plate count, pH value, TBA value, color difference, tension strength and sensory evaluation. The results showed that ground meat containing 20% w/w of binder admixture had higher cooking loss, shrinkage rate and shear value (p<0.05). Addition of different percentages of binder admixture did not affect total plate count, pH value, TBA value, and sensory evaluation of restructured meat (p>0.05). Tension strength was increased with increased level of binder admixture. Addition up to 15% binder admixture to restructured meat showed better scores of sensory texture, flavor and total acceptability (p<0.05).

(En)countering Modernity Ethnicly: Resistance and Intervention of Hagedorn`s Poetic Practice

        ( Shyh Jen Fuh ) 한국현대영미소설학회 2013 현대영미소설 Vol.20 No.3

Taking Raymond Williams`s critique of the ideology of Modernism as its point of departure, this paper studies Jessica Hagedorn`s poems against the context of post-Modernism and illuminates how she, situated as a postcolonial Filipino, explores an alternative route of negotiating modernity. The reading of Hagedorn shows that her inscription of the colonial experience and decolonizing struggle of Filipinos makes a much needed re-mark of coloniality, this “darker side of Western modernity” as Walter D. Mignolo calls it, which has been by the large left out of the precinct of canonical Modernist poetry and its followers beyond its heyday. Furthermore, it observes Hagedorn`s negotiation with mass culture---a practice that distablizes the ostensible divide between the claimed serious art and popular culture as established by canonical Modernism---and illustrates how this poetic practice, through maintaining a dialogue with the widely circulating mass culture, makes a promising route of intervening and negotiating modernity. With this reading, it also contends that the poetic practice emerging from and positioned in the periphery of globalized modernity must be included in the knowledge production of modern and contemporary poetry so that more alternative responsible responses to modernity might be established and the “modern future” which Williams calls for might take place, displacing the ideology of Modernism that still dominates the scene of contemporary poetry.

      • Simultaneous large continuous band gap tunability and photoluminescence enhancement in GaSe nanosheets via elastic strain engineering

        Wu, Yecun,Fuh, Huei-Ru,Zhang, Duan,Coileá,in, Cormac Ó,Xu, Hongjun,Cho, Jiung,Choi, Miri,Chun, Byong Sun,Jiang, Xuju,Abid, Mourad,Abid, Mohamed,Liu, Huajun,Wang, Jing Jing,Shvets, Igor V. Elsevier 2017 Nano energy Vol.32 No.-

Abstract

For applications in wearable human-device interfaces and optoelectronics, flexible materials capable of supporting spatial and uninterrupted bandgap tunability are of immense value. We demonstrate theoretically and experimentally the wide bandgap tunability of GaSe nanosheets, with simultaneous PL enhancement, via elastic strain engineering at room temperature. The elastic strain gives rise to a continuously variable electronic band structure profile, with a rate of 40meV/1%, and a 3-fold enhancement in PL intensity is achieved when a uniaxial strain of 1% is introduced. An additional effect is that a new exciton state arises when the strain is raised beyond 0.6%. This work suggests that strain engineering can effectively modulate/control the generation, separation, transport, and recombination of photo-induced charge carriers in GaSe, making it a valuable material for flexible optoelectronic-mechanical applications.

Highlights

Wide bandgap tunability of GaSe nanosheets, with simultaneous PL enhancement, via elastic strain engineering at room temperature.

A linear tuning rate of optical band gap of 40 meV/% for uniaxial strain has been achieved, comparable to monolayer MoS2.

Threefold enhancement in PL intensity achieved with a uniaxial strain of 1%.

Strain engineering used to control generation, separation, transport, and recombination of photo-induced charge carriers in GaSe.

New exciton state demonstrated when strain is greater than 0.6%, which shifts in the direction opposite to the main exciton state.

Suggests route to more efficient capture of optical spectrum, and exciton concentration and trapping by mechanical deformation.

Graphical abstract

[DISPLAY OMISSION]
