Amino Acid-Based Material for the Complementary Therapy of Decubitus Ulcers

Chronic wounds, pressure sores, lesions, and infections of microbial origin in bedridden, paralyzed, or malnutrition patients remain the object of study of many researchers. A variety of factors behind the development of these disorders are related to the patient`s immune system, making it unable to respond effectively to the treatment of the wound. These factors can be properly controlled, giving particular importance to the ethiology and stage of the wound, as well as the time periods corresponding to the replacement of the dressings. The present research reports a novel foam/soft material, L-Cys-g-PCL, with an application for decubitus/pressure ulcers, especially for wounds with a difficult healing process due to infections and constant oxidation of the soft tissues. During this work, the interactions between S. aureus and L-Cys-g-PCL foam were studied under conditions that simulate decubitus ulcers; namely, pH and exudate. The effects of duration of grafting (1 or 8 h) and pH (7.0 and 8.9) on wettability, surface energy, swelling, and porosity were also evaluated. Results showed an effective microbicidal activity exhibiting an inhibition ratio of 99.73% against S. aureus. This new L-Cys-g-PCL soft material showed saftey to contact skin, ability to be shaped to fill in sunken holes (craters) - pressure ulcers stage III - and to act as a smart material responsive to pH, which can be tailored to develop better swelling properties at alkaline pH where exudates are normally higher, so as to address exudate self-cleaning and prevention of desiccation.

In the past years the textile industry haswitnessed new advances in the area of textile fiber chainsengineering, which allow the modification of the structureof such chains so as to produce polymers responsive tochanges in the environment, thus capable of attaching tocells and bioactive molecules. On the other hand, followingour society's trend towards higher hygiene standards, theresearch and development of antimicrobial textiles hasshown a remarkable increase. Applications of such textilescan nowadays be found in underwear, sportswear, homefurnishing, protective clothing, wound-dressings and inmicrobial infection high risk settings, such as health careinstitutions. The present research aims at the developmentof a strong, durable and washable antimicrobial L-Cysteine(L-Cys)-functionalized cotton by means of a covalentmechanism. The covalent binding of L-Cys onto cellulosicfibers was assessed by Scanning Electron Microscopy-Energy Dispersive X-ray Spectroscopy (SEM-EDS) andFourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR) analysis. Antimicrobial assays showed that the functionalized cottonyielded strong microbial killing rates, exhibiting inhibitionratios of 89 and 83% against K. pneumoniae and S. aureus,respectively. These results demonstrate the effectiveness ofthe covalent modification of cotton fabrics with L-Cysadding antimicrobial properties to cotton fibers and thusopen the door to a world of applications in the area ofincreased risk microbial infections.

Hyperadrenocorticism (HAC) is a common endocrinopathy among dogs that causes multisystemic signs. This study was conducted to evaluate cardiocirculatory, biochemical, and hemostatic parameters in dogs with HAC at diagnosis, in addition to verifying whether abnormal parameters could be controlled by initial treatment with trilostane. Fifteen dogs with HAC were assessed by systolic blood pressure measurement, electrocardiography, Doppler echocardiography, serum concentration of troponin I, and biochemical and hemostatic profile at diagnosis and after trilostane therapy. Unlike biochemical parameters, hemostatic and cardiocirculatory parameters were not significantly influenced by the onset of treatment. The authors believe that clinical treatment with trilostane for 3 to 4 months might not be sufficient for the stabilization of cardiocirculatory abnormalities such as hypertension. Therefore, dogs with HAC must receive cardiocirculatory monitoring at diagnosis and during drug treatment.
Immobilization of commercial acid phosphatases from wheat germ and potato onto ion exchangers

A very simple and fast immobilization technique based on ion exchange was investigated to improve the thermal stability of acid phosphatase from wheat germ and potato. Immobilization was not efficient for the DEAE-sepharose, and MANAE-agarose supports. On the other hand, Toyopearl DEAE-650s proved to be a promising support, with immobilization yield above 95% and recovery of activity above 85% for both enzymes. A second step was introduced in the immobilization protocol to improve the thermal stability of these biocatalysts. For this, oxidation and reduction of glycosidic chains of acid phosphatase were carried out, allowing the formation of aldehyde groups and subsequent interaction with the amine groups to further stabilize the different forms (free and immobilized). Both biocatalysts showed residual activity after 1 hour of inactivation at the temperature of 60 °C, a fact not observed for the free enzyme. The wheat germ acid phosphatase derivative was the most stable, with residual activity of 66.7% for the only immobilized derivative and 76.2% for the oxidized/reduced derivative. Also, the derivatives prepared by ion exchange adsorption on Toyopearl (TOYO), followed by oxidation/reduction and intramolecular crosslinking, were approximately 15 and 41 times more stable than the free enzyme from wheat germ.
China`s Engagement in Africa and Reshaping Global Governance: The Case of Mozambique

중국의 대 아프리카 정책은 최근 중국 외교정책을 둘러싼 중요한 논쟁 중 하나로 자리잡아 왔다. 중국의 아프리카 정책에 대해 비판적인 시각은 중국의 아프리카 외교가 자원획득을 위한 전략적 차원에서 이루어진다는 점과 아프리카의 독재와 권위주의 정권을 연명시켜 준다는 점에 기반하고 있다. 이 논문은 이런 천편일률적인 시각에 대한 비판적 사고에서 중국의 아프리카 정책을 분석하고 있다. 이 논문은 중국이 추구하는 궁극적인 외교정책이 아프리카 시장의 확장과 이 지역의 경제발전이라는 단기적인 목표를 넘어 아프리카 대륙에서 새로운 형태의 거버넌스를 형성하고 있다는 주장을 하고 있다. 또한 중국의 후원으로 인한 경제성장이 아프리카의 민주주의가 공고해지는데 일정한 공헌을 하고 있다는 관찰을 통해 중국의 아프리카 외교정책이 상당한 성과를 거두고 있다는 점을 강조하고 있다. 이런 주장을 뒷받침하기 위한 연구사례로 비석유 생산국가인 모잠비크에 대한 중국의 외교정책을 집중적으로 분석했다. This paper used the case of the Chinese engagement in Mozambique to explain how Chinese engagement differs from that of the West and how it is contributing to the development of African states; a new type of "global governance." The paper criticizes the two ideas of common wisdom on China`s engagement in Africa. First, many scholars focus solely on China`s interest in African resources accusing the former of using a "neocolonialist" strategy on the later. Second, some scholars argue that China`s engagement based on non-interference and weak accountability is likely to strengthen the power and even increase the presence of authoritarian regimes in Africa. However, this paper proves that China`s interest in Africa goes far beyond oil; rather, it is a path to expand China`s markets, to export capital, and to promote economic development in terms of the Chinese way, without interference. The paper also finds evidence that Mozambique is consolidating democratic practices with strengthening nation building. China`s engagement in Africa increases the development opportunities for Mozambique and contributes to reducing the gap between the North and South, bringing more stability to the world.

Extraction with membrane contactors is an attractive technological alternative for organic acidseparation from fermentation broths. This work aims at studying the recovery process of succinic acid,integrating both extraction and re-extraction steps. It was proposed to use a non-porous membrane,which allows more flexibility of operation without loss of efficiency. For the integrated process, a 5-foldincrease in the recovery of acid from the feed stream was observed when compared to the singleextraction process, leading to an overall recovery close to 50%.
Heat Treatment and Lubrication Analysis Over Surface Integrity of Cold Extruded Metals

Cold forming is a process which is largely employed in industry. Thisprocess may have impacts on mechanical properties and surface integrity. This paper presents a study on Surface Integrity (SI) within the context of cold extruded billets with two different materials, steel and aluminium alloys. Different lubricant oils were used in this study, and heat treatment was employed after cold processing. Typical surface alterations such as micro-hardness and roughness were analysed, and a FEM analysis was used to predict the areas with increasing hardness. An analysis of test variance (ANOVA) was conducted, aiming to determine the influence factors of the experiments. Thus, influence factors like oil performance and extrusion load were investigated. The performance and influence of oils on cold extrusion processing for different materials were analysed. Due to the effects of lubricants on surface integrity in terms of hardness and roughness, a comparison was given with projections forsubstituting mineral oils for vegetable oils without losing functional performance.
