Yu-Fei Kong,Song-You Wang,Gang Yin,Liang-Yao Chen,Ming Xu 한국물리학회 2006 THE JOURNAL OF THE KOREAN PHYSICAL SOCIETY Vol.49 No.5I

The density-functional method is applied to investigate the structural, electronic and magnetic properties of a new intermetallic compound, Mn3Ge with a Cu3Au-type structure, which was syn- thesized recently. Our results, comparing the generalized gradient approximation and the local density approximation methods for the electronic and the magnetic properties of the newly synthe- sized material, are in reasonable agreement with the experimental data.

      • Predict Time Series with Multiple Artificial Neural Networks

Fei Li,Jin Liu,Lei Kong 보안공학연구지원센터 2016 International Journal of Hybrid Information Techno Vol.9 No.7

Time series prediction is a challenging research area with broad application prospects in machine learning. Accurate prediction on a time series’ value can provide important information for the decision-makers. In the literature, many works were reported to extend different architecture of artificial neural networks to work with time series prediction. However, most of the work only considered the target time series itself, while neglecting the impact of the relevant time series. In this paper we proposed a novel method MANNP that makes use of multiple artificial neural networks to conduct the time series prediction. The proposed method creates time series model and forecast time series. To verify the effectiveness of the proposed method, we apply MANNP to a shipping price index time series prediction. The experimental results show that this method can improve accuracy of prediction when compared with traditional methods.

      • A new method for lateral force calibration in Atomic Force Microscopy

        Fei Wang,Hong Joon Kim,Eui-Sung Yoon,Hosung Kong 한국트라이볼로지학회 2005 한국트라이볼로지학회 학술대회 Vol.2005 No.6

A new calibration method for quantitative lateral force measurement in atomic force microscope (AFM) is presented to measure lateral force accurately in nanotribology. The effect of contact stiffness on the conversion factor between lateral force and lateral signal is analyzed, and a new conversion factor involving a contact factor in the calibration procedure is proposed. The contact factor is affected by tip and cantilever stiffness and contact stiffness. Conventional conversion factor is determined experimentally and modified to involve the contact factor. The calibration results show that the dependency of the conventional conversion factor on the normal load and sample materials is eliminated by using the proposed method.

An Induced Hesitant Linguistic Aggregation Operator and Its Application for Creating Fuzzy Ontology

( Mingming Kong ),( Fangling Ren ),( Doo-soon Park ),( Fei Hao ),( Zheng Pei ) 한국인터넷정보학회 2018 KSII Transactions on Internet and Information Syst Vol.12 No.10

An induced hesitant linguistic aggregation operator is investigated in the paper, in which, hesitant fuzzy linguistic evaluation values are associated with probabilistic information. To deal with these hesitant fuzzy linguistic information, an induced hesitant fuzzy linguistic probabilistic ordered weighted averaging (IHFLPOWA) operator is proposed, monotonicity, boundary and idempotency of IHFLPOWA are proved. Then andness, orness and the entropy of dispersion of IHFLPOWA are analyzed, which are used to characterize the weighting vector of the operator, these properties show that IHFLPOWA is extensions of the induced linguistic ordered weighted averaging operator and linguistic probabilistic aggregation operator. In this paper, IHFLPOWA is utilized to gather linguistic information and create fuzzy ontologies, and a movie fuzzy ontology as an illustrative case study is used to show the elaboration of the proposed method and comparison with the existing linguistic aggregation operators, it seems that the IHFLPOWA operator is an useful and alternative operator for dealing with hesitant fuzzy linguistic information with probabilistic information.

      • Retinoid Receptors in Gastric Cancer: Expression and Influence on Prognosis

Hu, Kong-Wang,Chen, Fei-Hu,Ge, Jin-Fang,Cao, Li-Yu,Li, Hao Asian Pacific Journal of Cancer Prevention 2012 Asian Pacific journal of cancer prevention Vol.13 No.5

Background: Gastric cancer is frequently lethal despite aggressive multimodal therapies, and new treatment approaches are therefore needed. Retinoids are potential candidate drugs: they prevent cell differentiation, proliferation and malignant transformation in gastric cancer cell lines. They interact with nuclear retinoid receptors (the retinoic acid receptors [RARs] and retinoid X receptors [RXRs]), which function as transcription factors, each with three subclasses, ${\alpha}$, ${\beta}$ and ${\gamma}$. At present, little is known about retinoid expression and influence on prognosis in gastric cancers. Patients and Methods: We retrospectively analyzed the expression of the subtypes RARa, $RAR{\beta}$, $RAR{\gamma}$, RXRa, $RXR{\beta}$, $RXR{\gamma}$ by immunohistochemistry in 147 gastric cancers and 51 normal gastric epithelium tissues for whom clinical follow-up data were available and correlated the results with clinical characteristics. In addition, we quantified the expression of retinoid receptor mRNA using real-time PCR (RT-PCR) in another 6 gastric adenocarcinoma and 3 normal gastric tissues. From 2008 to 2010, 80 patients with gastric cancers were enrolled onto therapy with all-trans-retinoic acid (ATRA). Results: RARa, $RAR{\beta}$, $RAR{\gamma}$ and $RXR{\gamma}$ positively correlated with each other (p < 0.001) and demonstrated significantly lower levels in the carcinoma tissue sections (p < 0.01), with lower $RAR{\beta}$, $RAR{\gamma}$ and RXRa expression significantly related to advanced stages (p < =0.01). Tumors with poor histopathologic grade had lower levels of RARa and $RAR{\beta}$ in different histological types of gastric carcinoma (p < 0.01). Patients whose tumors exhibited low levels of RARa expression had significantly lower overall survival compared with patients who had higher expression levels of this receptor (p < 0.001, HR=0.42, 95.0% CI 0.24-0.73), and patients undergoing ATRA treatment had significantly longer median survival times (p = 0.007, HR=0.41, 95.0% CI 0.21-0.80). Conclusions: Retinoic acid receptors are frequently expressed in epithelial gastric cancer with a decreased tendency of expression and RARa may be an indicator of a positive prognosis. This study provides a molecular basis for the therapeutic use of retinoids against gastric cancer.

Radical resection benefits patients suffering pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma with liver oligometastases

        Qingyan Kong,Fei Teng,Hang Li,Zheyu Chen 대한외과학회 2024 Annals of Surgical Treatment and Research(ASRT) Vol.106 No.1

Purpose: Whether patients suffering liver oligometastases from pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma (LOPDA) should undergo surgical treatment remains controversial. Methods: PubMed and Embase databases were systematically reviewed until 2023 June. Survival data were collected from the Kaplan-Meier curves. Safety and survival were evaluated using primary outcomes such as 1-year, 3-year, and 5-year survival rates, and 30-day mortality and morbidity. A subgroup meta-analysis was conducted to compare survival rates post-synchronous resection and resection post-neoadjuvant chemotherapy in LOPDA. Results: Our analysis of 15 studies involving 1,818 patients (surgical group, 648 and nonsurgical group, 1,170) indicates that radical hepatectomy for LOPDA notably improved 1-year (odds ratio [OR], 3.24; 95% confidence interval [CI], 2.45–4.28; P < 0.001), 3-year (OR, 5.74; 95% CI, 3.36–8.90; P < 0.001), and 5-year (OR, 4.89; 95% CI, 2.56–9.35; P < 0.001) overall survival (OS) rates. A separate analysis of 6 studies with 750 patients demonstrated the safety of LOPDA surgery, with no increase in postoperative complications (P = 0.26 for overall morbidity and P = 0.99 for mortality) compared to the patients with no metastatic disease from the pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma (NMPDA) group. The NMPDA group showed superior 1-year and 3-year OS rates, but not 5-year OS rates compared to the LOPDA group. Conclusion: Surgical treatment apparently offers a survival advantage to LOPDA by comparing with nonsurgical groups in 1-, 3-, and 5-year OS rates. Radical resection for LOPDA is a safe treatment without more postoperative complications than NMPDA.

Computed tomography-based radiomic model predicts radiological response following stereotactic body radiation therapy in early-stage non-small-cell lung cancer and pulmonary oligo-metastases

Ben Man Fei Cheung,Kin Sang Lau,Victor Ho Fun Lee,To Wai Leung,Feng-Ming Spring Kong,Mai Yee Luk,Kwok Keung Yuen 대한방사선종양학회 2021 Radiation Oncology Journal Vol.39 No.4

Purpose: Radiomic models elaborate geometric and texture features of tumors extracted from imaging to develop predictors for clinical outcomes. Stereotactic body radiation therapy (SBRT) has been increasingly applied in the ablative treatment of thoracic tumors. This study aims to identify predictors of treatment responses in patients affected by early stage non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) or pulmonary oligo-metastases treated with SBRT and to develop an accurate machine learning model to predict radiological response to SBRT.Materials and Methods: Computed tomography (CT) images of 85 tumors (stage I–II NSCLC and pulmonary oligo-metastases) from 69 patients treated with SBRT were analyzed. Gross tumor volumes (GTV) were contoured on CT images. Patients that achieved complete response (CR) or partial response (PR) were defined as responders. One hundred ten radiomic features were extracted using PyRadiomics module based on the GTV. The association of features with response to SBRT was evaluated. A model using support vector machine (SVM) was then trained to predict response based solely on the extracted radiomics features. Receiver operating characteristic curves were constructed to evaluate model performance of the identified radiomic predictors. Results: Sixty-nine patients receiving thoracic SBRT from 2008 to 2018 were retrospectively enrolled. Skewness and root mean squared were identified as radiomic predictors of response to SBRT. The SVM machine learning model developed had an accuracy of 74.8%. The area under curves for CR, PR, and non-responder prediction were 0.86 (95% confidence interval [CI], 0.794–0.921), 0.946 (95% CI, 0.873–0.978), and 0.857 (95% CI, 0.789–0.915), respectively. Conclusion: Radiomic analysis of pre-treatment CT scan is a promising tool that can predict tumor response to SBRT.

A new calibration method for exact measurement of friction force in atomic force microscope (AFM) is presented. A new conversion factor involves a contact factor affected by tip, cantilever and contact stiffness. Especially the effect of contact stiffness on the conversion factor between lateral force and lateral signal is considered. Conventional conversion factor and a new modified conversion factor were experimentally compared. Results showed that a new calibration method could minimize the effect of normal load on friction force and improve the conventional method. A new method could be applied to the specimens with different physical properties.

Metabolic Engineering of Probiotic Saccharomyces boulardii

        Liu, Jing-Jing,Kong, In Iok,Zhang, Guo-Chang,Jayakody, Lahiru N.,Kim, Heejin,Xia, Peng-Fei,Kwak, Suryang,Sung, Bong Hyun,Sohn, Jung-Hoon,Walukiewicz, Hanna E.,Rao, Christopher V.,Jin, Yong-Su American Society for Microbiology 2016 Applied and environmental microbiology Vol.82 No.8

Saccharomyces boulardii is a probiotic yeast that has been used for promoting gut health as well as preventing diarrheal diseases. This yeast not only exhibits beneficial phenotypes for gut health but also can stay longer in the gut than Saccharomyces cerevisiae. Therefore, S. boulardii is an attractive host for metabolic engineering to produce biomolecules of interest in the gut. However, the lack of auxotrophic strains with defined genetic backgrounds has hampered the use of this strain for metabolic engineering. Here, we report the development of well-defined auxotrophic mutants (leu2, ura3, his3, and trp1) through clustered regularly interspaced short palindromic repeat (CRISPR)-Cas9-based genome editing. The resulting auxotrophic mutants can be used as a host for introducing various genetic perturbations, such as overexpression or deletion of a target gene, using existing genetic tools for S. cerevisiae. We demonstrated the overexpression of a heterologous gene (lacZ), the correct localization of a target protein (red fluorescent protein) into mitochondria by using a protein localization signal, and the introduction of a heterologous metabolic pathway (xylose-assimilating pathway) in the genome of S. boulardii. We further demonstrated that human lysozyme, which is beneficial for human gut health, could be secreted by S. boulardii. Our results suggest that more sophisticated genetic perturbations to improve S. boulardii can be performed without using a drug resistance marker, which is a prerequisite for in vivo applications using engineered S. boulardii.
