        On contraction of algebraic points

        Immune mechanisms in the different phases of acute tubular necrosis

        Acute kidney injury is a clinical syndrome that can be caused by numerous diseases including acute tubular necrosis (ATN). ATN evolves in several phases, all of which are accompanied by different immune mechanisms as an integral component of the disease process. In the early injury phase, regulated necrosis, damage-associated molecular patterns, danger sensing, and neutrophil-driven sterile inflammation enhance each other and contribute to the crescendo of necroinflammation and tissue injury. In the late injury phase, renal dysfunction becomes clinically apparent, and M1 macrophage-driven sterile inflammation contributes to ongoing necroinflammation and renal dysfunction. In the recovery phase, M2-macrophages and anti-inflammatory mediators counteract the inflammatory process, and compensatory remnant nephron and cell hypertrophy promote an early functional recovery of renal function, while some tubules are still badly injured and necrotic material is removed by phagocytes. The resolution of inflammation is required to promote the intrinsic regenerative capacity of tubules to replace at least some of the necrotic cells. Several immune mechanisms support this wound-healing-like re-epithelialization process. Similar to wound healing, this response is associated with mesenchymal healing, with a profound immune cell contribution in terms of collagen production and secretion of pro-fibrotic mediators. These and numerous other factors determine whether, in the chronic phase, persistent loss of nephrons and hyperfunction of remnant nephrons will result in stable renal function or progress to decline of renal function such as progressive chronic kidney disease.

        Improved Generalized Successive Cancellation List Flip Decoder of Polar Codes with Fast Decoding of Special Nodes

        In this paper, an improvement for SC list flip (SCLFlip)decoding is presented for polar codes. A novel bit-selectionmetric for critical set (set of information symbols of polar codesbeing flipped during additional decoding attempts) based on pathmetric of successive cancellation list (SCL) decoding is suggested. With the proposed metric, the improved SCL scheme based onspecial nodes (SN) decoders was developed. This decoder willbe denoted by GSCLF. The main idea of the proposed decoderis joint using of two approaches: first one is a fast decoding ofspecial nodes in binary tree representation of polar code (e.g.,some special nodes in tree representation of polar code that allowefficient list decoding with low complexity) and the second oneis an applying of additional decoding attempts (flips) in the casewhen initial decoding was erroneous. The simultaneous use ofthese two approaches results in both a significant reduction inspatial complexity and a significant reduction in the number ofcomputations required for decoding whereas keeping excellentperformance. Simulation results presented in this paper allow usto conclude that the computational complexity of the proposedGSCLF decoder is from 66% to 80% smaller than the one ofSCL-32 decoder.

        Lexical and Semantic Group of Adjectives Denoting Space Dimensions and Coordinates in Modern Yakut

        The article is devoted to the specific character of lexical polysemy in lexical and semantic groups (hereinafter LSG) of adjectives denoting space dimensions and coordinates in modern Yakut. This LSG, performing the role of quantitative and anthropometric metaphors, peculiarly refracts a parametric component ``more/lesser of the norm`` which is a nucleus of their original meaning.

        북한 화교 교육 제도의 역사

        This paper deals with education system for Chinese people in North Korea (Hwagyo). Chinese diaspora in the DPRK is unique, since they not only comprise the only ethic minority in the country, but also are the only group of North Korean permanent residents with foreign citizenship. The education system for the Hwagyo has been composed of the special “schools for the Chinese”. The author compares these schools with ordinary North Korean schools, schools in China and schools for ethnic minorities in the Soviet Union. The turning point for the “schools for the Chinese” was the year 1963. It was then when the North Korean authorities announced that North Korean school curriculum would be enforced in the “schools for the Chinese” and all lessons would be taught in Korean. The author shows how the Hwagyo reacted to such a reform. Currently there are 13 “schools for the Chinese” in North Korea. Given that their curriculum is almost identical to that of North Korean schools and that the level of the education its students receive is substandard, the author concludes that they exist solely as a symbol of “Friendship between North Korea and China”, which is officially declared by both countries.

        , Spontaneous Spinal Epidural Hematoma: A Retrospective Study on Prognostic Factors and Review of the Literature

        Objectives: The spontaneous spinal epidural hematoma(SSEH) is a rare clinical entity. Patients typically present with sudden onset back pain followed by neurological deficits. Methods: Diagnosis of SSEH is usually made with MRI and standard treatment is surgical evacuation. In 1996, Groen publi- shed the most comprehensive review on the SSEH in which he analyzed 333 cases. We review 104 cases of SSEH presented in the English literature since the last major review and add three of our own cases, for a total of 107 cases. Results: Our patients presented with back pain and neurologic deficits. Two made excellent functional recovery with prompt surgical decompression while one continued to have significant deficits despite evacuation. Better postoperative outcome was associated with less initial neurological dysfunction, shorter time to operation from symptom onset and male patients. Conclusion: We discuss the etiology of SSEH and report current trends in diagnosis, treatment, and outcome.

        Effects of the Pairing Interactions among the Nucleons in Exotic Nuclei within the Hartree Fock Bogoliubob (HFB) Theory

        We investigated the effects of nucleon pairing interactions, which include like nucleon pairing (neutron-neutron and proton-proton pairing) and unlike nucleon pairing (neutron-proton) interac- tions, on nuclear structure. In specic, the importance of the unlike pairing is detailed in medium heavy nuclei, such as isotopes of Ge and Zr. Al calculations are carried out within the Hartree Fock Bogoliubob theory in the Nilson basis in order to consider the deformation of the nuclei, which is a typical phenomenon in the exotic nuclei relevant to nucleosynthesis. Our results show that the unlike pairing interactions could play vital roles in understanding the nuclear structure. Even the ordinary nuclei, which are not usualy expected to have such large unlike proton pairing interac- tions, because of large Fermi energy gaps between protons and neutrons, could have unlike pairing interactions strong enough to be deliberately included. Our results are applied to the 64-76Ge and the 80-100Zr isotope series, which nuclei have recently been exploited as important isotopes in the rapid proton process in nucleosynthesis.

        Light availability rather than Fe controls the magnitude of massive phytoplankton bloom in the Amundsen Sea polynyas, Antarctica : Light availability rather than Fe controls phytoplankton bloom

        <P>Amundsen Sea polynyas are among the most productive, yet climate-sensitive ecosystems in the Southern Ocean and host massive annual phytoplankton blooms. These blooms are believed to be controlled by iron fluxes from melting ice and icebergs and by intrusion of nutrient-rich Circumpolar Deep Water, however the interplay between iron effects and other controls, such as light availability, has not yet been quantified. Here, we examine phytoplankton photophysiology in relation to Fe stress and physical forcing in two largest polynyas, Amundsen Sea Polynya (ASP) and Pine Island Polynya (PIP), using the combination of high-resolution variable fluorescence measurements, fluorescence lifetime analysis, photosynthetic rates, and Feenrichment incubations. These analyses revealed strong Fe stress in the ASP, whereas the PIP showed virtually no signatures of Fe limitation. In spite of enhanced iron availability in the PIP, chlorophyll biomass remained similar to 30-50% lower than in the Fe-stressed ASP. This apparent paradox would not have been observed if iron were the main control of phytoplankton bloom in the Amundsen Sea. Long-term satellite-based climatology records revealed that the ASP is exposed to significantly higher solar irradiance levels throughout the summer season, as compared to the PIP region, suggesting that light availability controls the magnitude of phytoplankton blooms in the Amundsen Sea. Our data suggests that higher Fe availability (e.g., due to higher melting rates of ice sheets) would not necessarily increase primary productivity in this region. Furthermore, stronger wind-driven vertical mixing in expanding ice-free areas may lead to reduction in light availability and productivity in the future.</P>

      • Effect of plastic deformation on the martensitic transformations in TiNi alloy

        A model of plastic deformation of the shape memory alloys which describes dislocation slip at the microlevel is developed. A condition similar to the Schmid law was adopted for the determination of dislocation slip onset. A description of the interaction of plastic deformation and martensitic transformations by taking into account the densities of deformation defects is proposed. It is shown that the model can correctly describe the effect of plastic strain on the shape memory effect. The proposed model is also capable of describing the two-way shape memory effect.
