Positional cloning (map-based cloning) of mutations or genetic variations has been served as an invaluable tool to understand in vivo functions of genes and to identify molecular components underlying phenotypes of interest. Mice homozygous for the cerebellar deficient folia (cdf) mutation are ataxic, with cerebellar hypoplasia and abnormal lobulation of the cerebellum. In the cdf mutant cerebellum approximately 40% of Purkinje cells are ectopically located within the white matter and the inner granule cell layer (IGL). To identify the cdf gene, a high-resolution genetic map for the cdf-gene-encompassing region was constructed using 1997 F2 mice generated from C3H/HeSnJ-cdf/cdf and CAST/Ei intercross. The cdf gene showed complete linkage disequilibrium with three tightly linked markers D6Mit208, D6Mit359, and D6Mit225. A contig using YAC, BAC, and P1 clones was constructed for the cdf critical region to identify the gene. We have identified a deletion in the cdf critical region on Chromosome 6 that removes approximately 150 kb of DNA, including an exon encoding a portion of the actin-binding domain of N-catenin, the protein that links the classical cadherins to the neuronal cytoskeleton. Normal cerebellar and hippocampal morphology was restored in cdf mutant mice expressing an N-catenin cDNA transgene, demonstrating that the catenin/cadherin cell adhesion complexes play an important role in the lamination of the cerebellum and hippocampus. Furthermore, our analysis of mutant mice demonstrates that fear conditioning, a form of associative learning, and prepulse inhibition are disrupted in cdf mutant mice, implicating the involvement of catenin/cadherin complexes in these behavioral processes.

Since the nineteenth century, many Chinese have looked to Australia as a land of opportunity, enterprise and eventually settlement. Early sojourners spent decades in colonial Australia with the intention of returning home according to the classical idiom luoye guigen 落葉歸根 (“falling leaves returning to their roots”). Later arrivals from the 1970s and beyond often came with the intention of establishing a new life and home in Australia. This paper examines the music of three collectivities of individuals who over the course of history, have chosen to stay without much thought of returning to their respective homelands. Their unique music, developed “down under,” has for many years influenced my work as a composer, performer and researcher of Chinese descent in the sonic exploration of my own cultural roots. Even to the present day, I attempt to discern what it means to be “Chinese” in a retrospective homeward journey back to China, my “imagined homeland,” as coined by historian Benedict Anderson (1991). Through the examination of various case studies, I present an analysis of my compositional output in relation to its intrinsic connection with selected genres of music from China currently performed in Australia.

Radiological hazards from external exposure of naturally occurring radioactive materials (NORM) scales residues, generated during the extraction process of oil and gas production in southern Algeria, are evaluated. The activity concentrations of 226Ra, 232Th, and 40K were measured using high-purity gammaray spectrometry (GeHP). Mean activity concentration of 226Ra, 232Th and 40K, found in scale samples are 4082 ± 41, 1060 ± 38 and 568 ± 36 Bq kg1 , respectively. Radiological hazard parameters, such as radium equivalent (Raeq), external and internal hazard indices (Hex, Hin), and gamma index (Ig) are also evaluated. All hazard parameter values were greater than the permissible and recommended limits and the average annual effective dose value exceeded the dose constraint (0.3 mSv y1 ). However, for occasionally exposed workers, the dose rate of 0.65 ± 0.02 mSv y1 is lower than recommended limit of 1 mSv y1 for public.

Thanks to their competitive price, store brands have important opportunities in emerging countries where customers have greater experience with modern retail products. However, less research has been devoted to the effect of store brand price while it is well known that price image is a critical factor that drives purchase behavior. The aim of this research is to understand how store brand price image factors (relative price, perceived benefit and perceived value) and perceived risk dimensions (functional and financial) affect attitude toward store brands in Colombia. Store brand relative price, store brand perceived benefit and store brand perceived value affect significantly attitude toward store brands in the Colombian context. However, neither store brand perceived functional risk, not store brand perceived financial risk affect attitude toward store brands. These results highlight the specificity of Colombia among emerging countries and have both theoretical and managerial implications.

The current study was conducted to build up a smart home-style greenhouse and implement inside this structure an IOT (Internet of Things) system. We have combined electronic equipments and IT tools and have thus been able to control and monitor two essential growing parameters in agriculture: Temperature and Humidity The temperature and humidity of the air directly affect two main functions of a plant, namely transpiration and photosynthesis, which consequently affects the quality, the crop yield, the production costs and therefore the profits that can be generated through an agricultural activity. The electronic system conceived to equip our home-style greenhouse is composed of several Arduino modules, servomotors, relays and various sensors. It had been then combined with a computer system consisting of a computer monitor, a central microprocessor based on a Raspberry Pi microcontroller and a camera. We had designed and developed the software programs needed to make this package works and placed in the greenhouse, temperature and humidity sensors connected to the Arduino modules. They transmit at any time (every second) these two climatic parameters of the greenhouse to another central Arduino module that controls the main heating and humidifying equipments. All Arduino modules that collect climate datas communicate with the central Arduino module via a 2.4GHz wireless radio connection. Then, the central Arduino transmits this datas to the computer system which is permanently connected to internet via a Wi-Fi connection. We have created a web server to which the Raspberry Pi upload all datas received from the greenhouse 24/7, and have designed a web interface from which the instantaneous evolution of the greenhouse climate can be observed from anywhere in the world. This web interface makes also possible to send back commands to the greenhouse, as well as will do a mobile phone application we had design for, to change its climatic conditions, namely to increase or reduce the temperature and/or humidity setpoints, open or close valves to trigger or stop feeding the plants with water, stopping or restarting the heating or humidification system, and starting or stopping the start-up of a fan to manage the flow of air within the greenhouse. Finally, a vision system that we have installed by equipping the greenhouse with a camera allows us to observe the greenhouse from any point of the globe, live on the web interface, and a GSM communication module we have programmed and coupled to one of the Arduino modules, is able to trigger a phone call to a predefined number, this number is editable either directly from keypads and small Liquid Cristal Display (LCD) screens linked to greenhouse, as well as in the mobile application, or editable from everywhere at any time through the web interface. This communication system can also send SMS to an operator, and thus, may alert urgently when a failure of a device occurs inside the greenhouse or when a predefined value of one of the setpoints has been exceeded or has fallen down below the expected reference.
Should I Stay or Should I Go? Patterns of Party Switching in Multiparty Taiwan
Dafydd Fell 동아시아연구원 2014 Journal of East Asian Studies Vol.14 No.1
Patterns of party switching in Taiwan have played an important role in the development and relative stability of its party system. In this study I aim to track key patterns of how politicians switched their partisan affiliation during the critical periods of party system change. I examine the level of party switching, where party switching was most prevalent, when switching was most common, and the most common types of switching since the advent of multiparty politics in Taiwan. Party switching is an important phenomenon in the development of party politics in Taiwan but thus far it has received surprisingly little systematic attention. This is the first comprehensive attempt to tackle this understudied topic.
