Detection of RNA Mycoviruses in Wild Strains of Lentinula edodes in Korea

In general, mycoviruses remain latent and rarely cause visible symptoms in fungal hosts; however, some viral infections have demonstrated abnormal mycelial growth and fruiting body development in commercial macrofungi, including Lentinula edodes. Compared to other cultivated mushrooms, L. edodes is more vulnerable to viral infections as it is still widely cultivated under near-natural conditions. In this study, we investigated whether Korean wild strains of L. edodes were infected by RNA mycoviruses that have previously been reported in other parts of the world (LeSV, LePV1, LeV-HKB, LeNSRV1, and LeNSRV2). Using specific primer sets that target the RNA-dependent RNA polymerase genes of each of the RNA mycovirus, reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) was used to detect viral infection. Viral infection was detected in about 90% of the 112 wild strains that were collected in Korea between 1983 and 2020. Moreover, multiple infections with RNA mycoviruses were detected in strains that had normal fruiting bodies. This work contributes to our understanding of the distribution of RNA mycoviruses in Korea and the impact of multiple viral infections in a single strain of L. edodes.
Image-Color Harmony: Insights from Design Practice

Although a number of methods have been developed for image recoloring, very little work has been done in the context of visual design. In this regard, this paper introduces a novel and practical context of image color adjustment that considers harmony between an image and a color. An experiment with designers were conducted to investigate the latent principles of image-color harmony. The result reveals three strategies of designers that are highly related to conventional color harmony theories. Designers` outcome also demonstrated the significance of hue feature in harmony. Based on the findings, we suggest probable technical approaches that a computational method should consider when it aims at image-color harmony.

좋은 배색을 탐구하였던 대부분의 기존 연구들은 일정한 배색의 규칙을 찾고, 이를 검증하는 방식으로 진행되어왔다. 하지만 이러한 방식은 정해진 규칙을 만족하는 배색을 조합하는 데에만 집중하여, 시대와 상황에 따라 변화하는 감성을 반영하지 못하는 단점을 가지고 있었다. 이에 본 연구에서는 사람들이 인지하는 감성과 트렌드를 반영한 배색의 특징을 이해하고자, 다수의 사용자가 직접 구성하고 평가한 크라우드소싱 데이터를 활용하였다. 또한 이 데이터를 분석함에 있어서 네트워크 분석기법을 도입하여, 여러 개의 색이 어우러져 하나의 조합을 이루는 배색의 관계적인 측면에 집중하고, 다수의 배색테마를 하나의 네트워크로 구성하여 거시적인 발견점을 얻고자 하였다. 이에 Adobe Color CCⓒ에서 수집된 약 7천 여 개의 테마를 네트워크로 시각화하고, 근접중심성을 계산하여 전체 배색 네트워크에서 인기 있는 색상과 보편적인 색을 파악하였다. 또한 커뮤니티 분석기법을 활용하여 조화로운 배색을 제안하는 방법을, LIWC를 활용하여 테마명을 분석하여 감성과 상황에 맞는 배색을 제안하는 방법을 탐색하였으며, 그 가능성을 확인하였다. The studies on harmonious color combinations have mainly identified the quantitative relationship within a set of harmonious colors and approval of the relationship. However, such methods are not easily capable of creating a new color combination. Moreover, it hardly reflects the changes of trend. In this regard, we utilized the crowd-sourced data that the crowd created color combinations and assessed their preference for them. Approximately 7,000 color themes were collected from Adobe Color CCⓒ and utilized for a network analysis. The network analysis supports a quick and easy visualization of color data, and helps to quantify the universality of each color by a closeness centrality measure. We also applied a community detection and LIWC dictionary in order to explore a way of generating harmonious and affective schemes. The results shows that the crowd-sourced data might be a good source to suggest appropriate color schemes when combined with proper methods.

기존의 배색연구는 대부분 제한된 양의 데이터 내에서 일정한 배색의 규칙을 찾고 이를 검증하는 방식으로 진행되어 왔다. 이에 본 연구는 대중들의 관심와 트렌드를 반영한 배색의 특징을 이해하고 이를 배색 추천에 활용하기 위해 사용자가 직접 구성하고 평가한 배색 빅데이터를 활용하였다. 또한 색상 데이터를 분석함에 있어서 최초로 네트워크 분석을 시도하여, 여러 개의 색이 어우러져 하나의 조합을 이루는 배색조합의 관계적인 측면을 분석코자 하였다. 그 결과, 약 7천 여개 배색조합에서 인기 있는 색상과 보편적인 색상을 파악할 수 있었으며, 더 나아가 조화로운 배색을 위해 네트워크 분석이 활용될 수 있는 예 또한 제시하였다.
Vertical Transmission of RNA Mycoviruses in Lentinula edodes

Lentinula edodes is an important commercial mushroom and there have been several reports of viral infections in L. edodes. Two mycoviruses (LeV-HKB and LeNSRV1) were detected in Sanbaekhyang (NIFoS 2778) and Taehyanggo (NIFoS 4317), the sawdust- cultivated commercial strains. The vertical transmission rates of the viruses were investigated by detecting the viruses in 80 monokaryotic strains derived from basidiospores isolated from the fruiting bodies of each strain. Most of the monokaryotic strains were infected with the virus and the two viruses showed different levels of meiotic stability, with LeV-HKB showing higher meiotic stability than LeNSRV1. Therefore, it seems that the vertical transmission mechanism of mycoviruses is different depending on the virus species. We also examined the mycelial growth rate of the monokaryotic strains and compared the growth rate according to virus infection status. Although there was no statistically significant correlation between viral infection and mycelial growth rate, we found that the average growth rate was reduced by additional virus infection. We expect our data to contribute to a greater understanding of the mechanism of the vertical transmission of mycoviruses, and promoting breeding using virus-free monokaryotic strains.

A 16 year-old female grey pony was presented to Animal and Plant Quarantine agency for diagnosis in Feb 2, 2015. At necropsy, multiple pigmented masses, likely melanomas, were detected peri-anally and under the tail. Further metastatic spread to the spleen, liver, lung and lymph nodes was also identi-fied. Histopathologically, anaplastic and pleomorphic melanocytes were observed in the mass. By im-munohistochemistry, PNL2, S100 and PGP 9.5 protein were detected, but Melan A was not expressed in the neoplastic melanocytes. Based on the pathological and immunohistochemical examination, we di-agnosed this case as malignant melanoma in a grey pony. To the authors` knowledge, this is the first report of equine malignant melanoma in republic of Korea.

Six to seven-month-old 10 beef calves in 140-head beef cattle farm in Gimpo-si, Gyeonggi-do were suffered from ataxia and astasia. Two of them were submitted to Animal and Plant Quarantine Agency for diagnosis in July 9, 2015. At necropsy, the radius and tibia of both calves showed irregular thickening and hemorrhage of the physis in addition to hemorrhage and disruption of trabeculae in metaphysis. Histopathologically the physis showed irregular tongues of cartilage remaining the metaphysis. Disorganization, hemorrhage and fibrosis were observed in metaphyseal and epiphyseal bones. The serum 25-hydroxyvitamin D3 (D3) and calcium levels were lower than normal range. In addition, the serum D3 levels in the other 9 calves of the same farm were lower than normal levels. Based on the pathological examination and serum chemistry measurements, we diagnosed this case as rickets caused by vitamin D deficiency in calves.
