Many studies revealed the neuroprotective, cardioprotective, and chemopreventive actions of dietary flavonoids. The plausible mechanistic interpretation of the various effects of flavonoids was concentrated on the anti-oxidant or free radical-scavenging properties of these phytochernicals, both in model systems and under in vivo conditions. While there has been a major focus on the anti-oxidant properties. there is an emerging view that flavonoids and their in vivo metabolites. do not act as conventional hydrogen-donating anti-oxidants. but they may exert regulatory functions in cells through actions at protein kinase or lipid kinase signaling pathways. Flavonoids and more recently their metabolites. have been reported to act at phosphoinositide 3-kinase(PI 3-kinase). Akt/protein kinase B(Akt/PKB), protein kinase C (PKC), mitogen activated protein kinase(MAP kinase), and various tyrosine kinases signaling cascades. Inhibitory or stimulatory actions at these pathways are likely to affect cellular function profoundly by altering the phosphorylation state of target molecules and by modulating gene expression. A clear understanding of the mechanisms of action of flavonoids, either as anti-oxidants or modulators of cellular signaling pathways, and the influence of their metabolism on these properties are key to the evaluation of these potent biomolecules as anti-cancer agents, cardio-protectants, and inhibitors of neurodegeneration.
Lee, Eung-Chang,Yang, Jun-Young,Lee, Kyung-Goo,Oh, Seung-Young,Suh, Yun-Suhk,Kong, Seong-Ho,Yang, Han-Kwang,Lee, Hyuk-Joon The Korean Gastric Cancer Association 2014 Journal of gastric cancer Vol.14 No.4
Purpose: This study aimed to evaluate the value of serum carcinoembryonic antigen (CEA) and carbohydrate antigen 19-9 (CA19-9) levels to detect gastric cancer recurrence. Materials and Methods: We retrospectively reviewed 154 patients who developed recurrence within 2 years after curative gastric cancer surgery and analyzed the relationship between postoperative CEA and CA19-9 levels and recurrence. We readjusted the cut-off values to improve the detection of recurrence. Subgroup analysis according to clinicopathologic variables was performed to further investigate the relationship between recurrence and CEA and CA19-9 levels. Results: The sensitivity and specificity for elevated CEA levels to detect recurrence were 40.6% and 89.5%, respectively, and those for CA19-9 were 34.2% and 93.6%, respectively. The sensitivity and specificity for elevation of either tumor marker were 54.3% and 84.0%, respectively; those for elevation of both tumor markers were 19.2% and 98.4%, respectively. By readjusting the cut-off values from 5.0 ng/ml to 5.2 ng/ml for CEA and from 37.00 U/ml to 30.0 U/ml for CA19-9, the sensitivity was increased from 34.2% to 40.2% for CA19-9, while there was no increase in sensitivity for CEA. In subgroup analysis, the sensitivity of CEA was higher in patients with elevated preoperative CEA levels than in patients with normal preoperative CEA levels (86.7% versus 33.7%; P<0.001). Furthermore, the sensitivity of CA19-9 was higher in patients with elevated preoperative CA19-9 levels than in patients with normal preoperative CA19-9 levels (82.61% versus 26.83%; P<0.001). Conclusions: CEA and/or CA19-9 measurement with the readjusted cut-off values allows for more effective detection of gastric cancer recurrence.

<P>Parasitic organisms are incapable of de novo fatty acid synthesis due to a down-regulated expression of enzymes involved in the oxygen-dependent pathway. We investigated the uptake of host lipids by a 150-kDa hydrophobic ligand-binding protein (HLBP) of Taenia solium metacestode, an agent causative of neurocysticercosis. The protein was found to be a hetero-oligomeric complex consisting of multiple subunits (Mr 7, 10, and 15 kDa within pH 8.0–9.7), which may originate from four unique genes of 7- and 10-kDa gene families with 2–3 polymorphic alleles/paralogs. The 15-kDa protein represented glycosylated forms of the 10-kDa. With high binding affinity to lipid analogs, these subunits evidenced high-level sequence identity with other cestode HLBPs and form a novel clade associated with excretory–secretory type HLBP. In vitro experiments with viable worms suggested that the excreted 150-kDa protein might bind to lipids, and participate in the translocation of host lipids across the syncytial membrane. This process was substantially inhibited by the specific anti-150 kDa antibodies. The protein was localized in the parasite syncytium and in the lipid droplets within host granuloma wall, where significant lipase activity was expressed. HLBP-mediated uptake of the host lipid may be critical for the parasite survival and thus could be targeted by chemotherapeutics and/or vaccine.</P>

<P>Two-dimensional (2-D) and three-dimensional (3-D) diamond-like carbon (DLC) stamps for ultraviolet nanoimprint lithography were fabricated with two methods: namely, a DLC coating process, followed by focused ion beam lithography; and two-photon polymerization patterning, followed by nanoscale-thick DLC coating. We used focused ion beam lithography to fabricate 70 nm deep lines with a width of 100 nm, as well as 70 nm deep lines with a width of 150 nm, on 100 nm thick DLC layers coated on quartz substrates. We also used two-photon polymerization patterning and a DLC coating process to successfully fabricate 200 nm wide lines, as well as 3-D rings with a diameter of 1.35 <I>μ</I>m and a height of 1.97 <I>μ</I>m, and a 3-D cone with a bottom diameter of 2.88 <I>μ</I>m and a height of 1.97 <I>μ</I>m. The wafers were successfully printed on an UV-NIL using the DLC stamps without an anti-adhesive layer. The correlation between the dimensions of the stamp's features and the corresponding imprinted features was excellent.</P>

Background: Published reports on the effect of alcohol drinking on the bone mineral density(BMD) were inconsistent. The objectives of this study was to examine the relation between alcohol drinking and BMD and serum estradiol concentration. Material and Methods: The authors analysed BMD and serum estradiol concentration of 442 postmenopausal women who visited a general hospital in Taejon city for routine check from Mar. 2000 to Feb. 2001. Studied women were divided into 4 categories such as nondrinkers, light drinkers(<45g/week), moderate drinkers(45-179g/week), and heavy drinkers(≥180g/week) on the basis of drinking amount of alcohol. BMD was measured using dual energy X-ray absorptiometry. Measurements taken at four bone sites were used: lumbar spine, femoral neck, trochanter of femur, and Ward's triangle. The data were analyzed using ANOVA test and multiple linear regression. Result : The mean BMD in lumbar spine, femoral neck, trochanter of femur, and Ward's triangle were higher in drinkers than nondrinkers and the highest in light drinkers(<45 g/week). The mean serum estradiol level was higher in drinkers than nondrinkers and increased with increasing the quantity of alcohol consumed. Stepwise multiple regression analysis of attributes of subjects on BMD revealed that alcohol drinking and serum estradiol level were significant variables. On stepwise multiple regression analysis of attributes of subjects on serum estradiol, alcohol drinking was a significant variable. Conclusion: The alcohol drinking was associated with higher BMD and serum estradiol level in postmenopausal women. But BMD was decreased with increasing the quantity of alcohol consumed. Although social drinking had positive effect on BMD like our results, alcohol abuse was suggested to have harmful effect on bone metabolism and careful clinical application is required.

As the number of buildings that use the transparent permeation materials as the outer wall is on the increase, the coming amount of the light rays is a lot, and thus the increase in the cooling load and the radiant heat of high temperature may cause the residents to discomfort. In order to reduce such influences, this paper analyzed the installation effects of the sunshade BIPV. The inner temperature of the room installed the sunshade BIPV or otherwise was measured, and compared and analyzed the effects of reducing the cooling load by the incoming light rays. The sample space of the third floor of S university installed the sunshade BIPV has two rooms on the same conditions, and for five sunny days selected in August, the researcher measured the air temperature and the temperature of the fittings with closing the windows to minimize the movement of air without operating the coolers. The maximum cooling load measured by the incoming light rays in the room where the sunshade BIPV was not installed was examined as 459.13kcal/h. It can be understood as the effect of reducing the cooling load according to the incoming rays of the room with sunshade BIPV. Even though the effect of cooling load reduction is not so great in a room, the total reduction in cooling room for the 32 rooms installed the sunshade BIPV was estimated to be 40442.27kcal/day, which will be able to bring the maximum reduction effect of 17.lkW in energy and reduce the investment cost owing to the reduction in cooling load when initially designing the building.
