        Controlling of the Optical Properties of the Solutions of the PTCDI-C8 Organic Semiconductor

        N,N′-Dioctyl-3,4,9,10 perylenedicarboximide (PTCDI-C8) organicsemiconductor have vast applications in solar cells, thermoelectricgenerators, thin film photovoltaics and many other optoelectronicdevices. These applications of the materials are based on their spectraland optical properties. The solutions of the PTCDI-C8 for differentmolarities were prepared and the spectral and optical mesaurementswere analyzed. Effects of the molarities on optical properties wereinvestigated. Vibronic structure has been observed based on theabsorption bands of PTCDI-C8 semiconductor with seven peaks at2.292, 2.451, 2.616, 3.212, 3.851, 4.477 and 4.733 eV. The importantspectral parameteres such as molar/mass extinction coefficients,absorption coefficient of the PTCDI-C8 molecule were calculated. Optical properties such as angle of incidence/refraction, optical bandgap, real and imaginary parts of dielectric constant, loss factor andelectrical susceptibility of the the PTCDI-C8 were obtained. Finally,we discussed these parameters for optoelectronic applications andcompared with related parameters in literature.

        Fragmented local normative orders, unresolved localizations, and the contesting of gender equality norms in Turkey

        This paper examines the localization process of the global gender equality norm in Turkey and argues that the normative contestations on this concern, among rival political blocs and activist groups, have not allowed any resolution. Accordingly, the global gender equality norm has undergone state-led secular localization as of the 1990s. In the post-2010 context under AKP rule, however, this process was disrupted by the proponents of the alternative conservative local norm of gender justice, who sought to replace the already localized norm of gender equality. Our study examines the contestations and rivalries regarding gender equality in the country with an emphasis on normative strategies utilised by the secular and conservative political blocs. Based on face-to-face interviews conducted with representatives of the main trade unions in the country, we also did a minor case study of the ongoing contestations regarding the adoption of gender equality norms, as manifested in trade union activism.

        Development of Beauveria bassiana (Ascomycota: Hypocreales) as a mycoinsecticide to control green peach aphid, Myzus persicae (Homoptera: Aphididae) and investigation of its biocontrol potential

        Long-term and intensive use of synthetic insecticides to control the green peach aphid, Myzus persicae (Homo ptera: Aphididae) in agricultural production in the world has resulted in pest resistance and environmental pollution. The aim of the study was to develop an environmentally-friendly and effective mycoinsecticide from a local fungal isolate against M. persicae. According to the results of the screening experiments using 15 isolates (6 × Metarhizium, 5 × Beauveria, 2 × Isaria, 2 × Lecanicillium) at 1 × 10 7 conidia ml − 1 concentrations and the dose–response experiments at 1 × 10 5 –1 × 10 9 conidia ml − 1 concentrations against M. persicae nymphs, Beauveria bassiana (KTU-24) was identified as the most promising isolate. The strain KTU-24 is also had tolerance to ecological conditions such as temperature, and UV-B. KTU-24 with advantageous and superior properties was used to develop a test mycoinsecticide. Mass production of spores by KTU-24 was conducted out by liquid-state fermentation using liquid medium. Spores harvested from the sporulated biomass were used to develop an oilbased mycoinsecticide, and the product was designated as AFIDISIDAL-OD Bbas-TR61. The product had lethal effect on M. persicae nymphs at a concentration of 1 × 10 8 conidia ml − 1 in leaf-disc (82.5%) and pot (84.33%) experiments in a climate chamber. The oil-based mycoinsecticide developed in this study could be profitable when used in aphid-IPM prgrams by reducing crop loss and synthetic pesticides use.

        Earthquake behavior of M1 minaret of historical Sultan Ahmed Mosque (Blue Mosque)

        Minarets are almost the inevitable part of Mosques in Islam and according to some, from a philosophical point of view, today they symbolize the spiritual elevation of man towards God. Due to slenderness, minarets are susceptible to earthquakes and wind loads. They are mostly built in a masonry style by using cut limestone blocks or occasionally by using bricks. In this study, one minaret (M1 Minaret) of one of the charmest mosques of Turkey, Sultan Ahmed Mosque, popularly known as Blue Mosque, built between 1609 and 1616 on the order of Sultan Ahmed by the architect Mehmet Agha is investigated under some registered earthquake loads. According to historical records, a great earthquake hit Istanbul and/or its close proximity approximately every 250 years. Ottomans tackled with the problem of building earthquake resistant, slender minarets by starting to use forged iron connectors with lead as a filler to fix them to the upper and lower and to adjacent stones instead of using traditional mortar only. Thus, the discrete stones are able to transfer tensile forces in some sense. This study investigates the contribution of lead to the energy absorption capacity of the minaret under extensive earthquakes occurred in the region. By using the software ANSYS/LS-DYNA in modelling and investigating the minaret nonlinearly, it is found out that under very big recorded earthquakes, the connectors of vertical cast iron-lead mechanism play very important role and help to keep the structure safe.

        Advantages of Simultaneous Cementless Bilateral Unicondylar Knee Arthroplasty Compared to Staged Surgery

        Background: Unicondylar knee arthroplasty (UKA) is an effective procedure, which reduces pain, increases range of motion, and improves function. UKA could be performed simultaneously or in staged sessions. This study aimed to compare bilateral cementless UKA performed simultaneously and in staged sessions in terms of complications, hemoglobin levels, transfusions, and functional outcomes. Methods: Patients undergoing bilateral UKA for symptomatic medial compartment osteoarthritis were retrospectively analyzed. Of the 73 patients who met the inclusion criteria, 40 underwent surgery simultaneously and 33 underwent surgery in separate sessions. Operative time, length of hospital stay, change in hemoglobin, need for blood transfusion, complications, and functional outcomes were assessed. Results: There was no statistically significant difference between the two groups in demographic data. Simultaneously operated patients had a significantly shorter hospital stay and shorter operative time. Statistically significant improvements in clinical scores were noted in both groups. The degree of improvement in functional scores did not differ between the groups. There was no difference between the two groups in terms of complication rates, but the number of periprosthetic tibial fractures was higher in the simultaneous group. Conclusions: Simultaneous bilateral cementless UKA was more advantageous in terms of cumulative hospital stay and total operation time with similar clinical results when compared to a staged procedure. While the overall complication rate was similar, the rate of periprosthetic fractures was 5% in the simultaneous group.

Arel University allows students in the MBA program to research success stories like Formula 1(auto-sports) in order to develop a positioning and targeting strategy for the developing economy.

        Reliability of 2 Smartphone Applications for Cobb Angle Measurement in Scoliosis

        Background: As mobile technology has evolved, smartphone applications have been used for radiographic angle measurements in daily clinical practice. This study aimed to assess the reliability of 2 smartphone applications (iPinPoint and Cobbmeter) in measuring scoliosis Cobb angles compared with picture archiving and communication system (PACS) tools. Methods: Anteroposterior whole spinal digital radiographs of 50 patients were retrospectively analyzed. Four observers measured Cobb angles of predetermined major structural curves using the tools in the PACS software and 2 smartphone applications. The inter- and intraobserver reliabilty were measured using intraclass correlation coefficients (ICC). Results: Very good interobserver agreement was seen with PACS, iPinPoint, and Cobbmeter measurements (ICC, 0.991, 0.980, and 0.991, respectively). Intraobserver reliability of the 4 observers was also very good for all techniques (ICC > 0.9 for all observers). Conclusions: Both smartphone applications were reliable in measuring scoliosis Cobb angles, with reference to PACS tools. They may be useful when digital or manual mesurement tools are not available.

        Pack-Boriding of Monel 400: Microstructural Characterization and Boriding Kinetics

        Monel 400 was pack-borided in the temperature range of 1173–1273 K for exposure times of 2–6 h. The boride layersproduced on the surface of the alloy were examined by scanning electron microscopy and phase identification was carriedout by X-ray diffraction. The topmost layer on the borided Monel 400 was compact and contained the Ni2Bphase whilethe diffusion zone contained grain boundary precipitates of borides. Boride layers of 35–290 μm thickness and 1002–1476HV0.025hardness were obtained. SEM observations revealed a smooth interface between the boride layer and the diffusionzone. A kinetic model based on the integral method was applied to investigate the kinetics of Ni2Blayer. The boron activationenergy in the Ni2Blayer was estimated as equal to 300.7 kJ mol−1. An experimental validation of the model was madeby comparing the experimental layer thicknesses obtained, after boriding at 1198 K for 1 and 3 h, with predicted values.

        Thiol Disulfide Homeostasis in Schizophrenic Patients Using Atypical Antipsychotic Drugs

        Objective: Schizophrenia is a severe, debilitating mental disorder characterized by behavioral abnormalities. Although several studies have investigated the role of oxidative stress and the effects of antipsychotic drugs on oxidative markers in schizophrenia, adequate information is not available on these issues. The aim of this study is to determine the changes in oxidative status and thiol disulfide homeostasis in schizophrenic patients using atypical antipsychotic drugs. Methods: Thirteen schizophrenic patients using atypical antipsychotic drugs and 30 healthy controls were included this study. The concentrations of total oxidant status (TOS), total antioxidant status (TAS), native thiol, total thiol, and disulfide levels were determined in the study population. Results: The TAS (p=0.001), total thiol, and native thiol levels (p<0.001) were higher in the patients compared to the controls, whereas the TOS and disulfide levels were lower in the patients than in the controls (p<0.001). Conclusion: These results may suggest that atypical antipsychotic drugs have a useful therapeutic effect by reducing oxidative stress via the inhibition of the formation of disulfide bonds. The study population number was one of the limitations of this study. Therefore, further studies are needed to establish the association between thiol disulfide homeostasis in schizophrenic patients using atypical antipsychotic drugs

        Effects of the Prenatal Administration of Tetanus Toxoid on the Sociability and Explorative Behaviors of Rat Offspring: A Preliminary Study

        Objective: Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is a severely disabling psychiatric disease characterized by impairments in communication and social skills. Although efforts have been made to explore the etiology of ASD, its pathophysiology remains unclear. This issue is rendered more challenging by confounding data about the effects of vaccination on disease etiology. In this study, therefore, we investigated the neurodevelopmental effects of maternal tetanus toxoid administration on rat offspring. We hypothesized that the vaccine affects the sociability and preference for social novelty of rat offspring as well as the production of immunological and neurotrophic factors, including tumor necrosis factor-alfa (TNF-), neuregulin-1 (NRG-1), neuron growth factor (NGF), and oxytocin. Methods: The study involved 12 female and 4 male adult Sprague−Dawley rats (238 ± 10 g), which were assigned to two groups. Group 1 (control group) was given 0.5 ml of normal saline (0.9% NaCl) on the 10th day of pregnancy, whereas Group 2 (experimental group) was administered 0.5 ml of tetanus vaccine (tetanus toxoid, 40 IU). Results: Maternal tetanus toxoid administration exerted beneficial effects on the sociability and explorative behaviors of the rats. The brain tissue levels of TNF-, NGF, NRG-1, and oxytocin were higher in the experimental group than those among the controls. All these significant differences were found in both the male and female rats. Conclusion: This study is the first to demonstrate the advantages of tetanus toxoid administration in relation to the sociability and explorative behaviors of rat offspring. The results showed that the vaccine also influences NRG-1, neuregulin, and oxytocin production.
