This dissertation discusses three Korean American novels which deal with the Korean comfort woman issue, namely Nora Okja Keller’s Comfort Woman (1997), Therese Park’s A Gift of the Emperor (1997), and Chang-rae Lee’s A Gesture Life (1999). While different discussions on the novels generally position comfort women as helpless victims, this study aims to deconstruct that narrative which completely strips them of agency, and attributes it to their victimizers. Focusing on the literary comfort woman figures in the three novels not merely as victims but as agents, the dissertation mainly explores how they manage to overcome the power imbalance which allows the Japanese to monitor, censor, and control them. To that end, the dissertation introduces the issue of Korean comfort women, and comments on the official silence that surrounded it till the early nineties. Addressing the question of voice and self-representation, the dissertation uses Keller’s Comfort Woman to examine the subversive means that comfort women resorted to in order to break the silence imposed upon them. The asymmetrical power relation that allowed the silencing of women for so long meant that their bodies were also controlled and monitored. Locating the struggle for agency within the female Korean body, the dissertation discusses the theoretical context that framed and validated the abuse of the Korean female body, especially in the context of nationalism and imperialism in Lee’s A Gesture Life. While issues of voice and narration, on the one hand, and the lived material experience of colonized subjects, on the other, are often discussed in relation to the comfort woman issue, the experience is rarely examined from an affective angle. To bridge that perceived gap, the dissertation examines, through Park’s A Gift of the Emperor, how affects and emotions are an integral part of politics and how comfort women had to resist not just the abuse of the body but also of their emotions. All three chapters thus explore the issue of agency from a different viewpoint in each of the novels; they locate the characters’ agency in their ability to express the ineffable when silenced, to challenge restrictive socio-political fetters through deliberate action, and to heal emotional wounds, resisting the breaking of their spirit. 본 논문은 위안부 문제를 다루는 세 개의 재미 한인 작가의 소설을 다루고 있다: 노라 옥자 켈러의 『종군 위안부(Comfort Woman)』(1997), 테리스 박의 『황제의 선물(A Gift of the Emperor)[ 본 소설의 한국번역 본이 없는 관계로 소설 제목을 필자가 번역함]』(1997), 그리고 이창래의 『제스쳐 라이프(A Gesture Life)』(1999). 세 작품에 대한 기존 담론은 위안부를 힘 없는 피해자의 위치에 놓지만 본 연구에서는 그들의 에이전시를 박탈하여 가해자에 부여하는 서사 구조를 해체하고자 한다. 작품 속 위안부를 단순히 피해자가 아닌, 그들의 주체성에 대해 초점을 맞춤으로써 위안부가 그들을 감시하고 검열하고 통제할 수 있는 일본과의 권력의 불균형을 극복하는 방식을 살펴 보고자 한다. 이에 따라, 본 논문은 위안부 문제에 대한 배경을 소개하고 있으며, 1990년대 초반까지도 이를 둘러싼 공식적인 침묵에 대해 언급한다. 목소리와 자기 표현(재현)의 문제에 대해 본 논문은 켈러의 『종군 위안부(Comfort Woman)』을 통해 위안부들이 그들에게 강제된 침묵을 깨기 위해 활용한 전복적인 장치를 살핀다. 여성의 침묵을 강제한 권력의 불균형 때문에 그들의 신체마저도 통제와 감시의 대상이 되었었다. 한국 여성의 신체를 에어전시를 위한 투쟁의 장으로 이해하고, 본 논문은 한국 여성의 신체에 대한 폭력의 이론적인 기반과 정당화에 대해 특히 이창래의 제스쳐 라이프(A Gesture Life)』에서 제시하는 민족주의와 제국주의의 맥락에서 살펴 본다. 위안부 문제를 다룸에 있어 한 편으로 목소리와 서사, 또 다른 각도에서는 식민 주체의 실제 경험의 사료를 언급하고 있으나 실제 경험에 대한 정서적인(affective) 분석은 부족하다. 이러한 인지의 간극을 좁히기 위해 본 논문은 테리스 박의 『황제의 선물(A Gift of the Emperor)』를 통해 정서와 감정이 정치의 핵심에서 위안부 여성은 몸에 대한 폭력뿐만 아니라 그들 정서에 대한 폭력을 이겨내야 했던 점을 살핀다. 따라서, 논문을 구성하고 있는 세 개의 챕터는 에이전시의 문제를 각 소설 특유의 관점에서 살핌으로써 형언할 수 없는 것을 표현하고, 의도된 행위로서 억압적인 사회정치적인 제약에 항거하고 정서적인 상처를 치유하여 정신의 파괴에 저항하는 위안부의 힘에 나타난 그들의 에이전시를 확인하고 있다.
