Instanton determinant with arbitrary quark mass: WKB phase-shift method and derivative expansion
Dunne, Gerald V.,Hur, Jin,Lee, Choonkyu,Min, Hyunsoo Elsevier 2004 Physics letters: B Vol.600 No.3

Abstract

The fermion determinant in an instanton background for a quark field of arbitrary mass is studied using the Schwinger proper-time representation with WKB scattering phase shifts for the relevant partial-wave differential operators. Previously, results have been obtained only for the extreme small and large quark mass limits, not for intermediate interpolating mass values. We show that consistent renormalization and large-mass asymptotics requires up to third-order in the WKB approximation. This procedure leads to an almost analytic answer, requiring only modest numerical approximation, and yields excellent agreement with the well-known extreme small and large mass limits. We estimate that it differs from the exact answer by no more than 6% for generic mass values. In the philosophy of the derivative expansion the same amplitude is then studied using a Heisenberg–Euler-type effective action, and the leading order approximation gives a surprisingly accurate answer for all masses.

Precise Quark-Mass Dependence of the Instanton Determinant
Dunne, Gerald V.,Hur, Jin,Lee, Choonkyu,Min, Hyunsoo American Physical Society 2005 Physical review letters Vol.94 No.7

The fermion determinant in an instanton background for a quark field of arbitrary mass is determined exactly using an efficient numerical method to evaluate the determinant of a partial-wave radial differential operator. The bare sum over partial waves is divergent but can be renormalized in the minimal subtraction scheme using the result of WKB analysis of the large partial-wave contribution. Previously, only a few leading terms in the extreme small and large mass limits were known for the corresponding effective action. Our approach works for any quark-mass and interpolates smoothly between the analytically known small and large mass expansions.

Comparison of GMAW and SAW for NGW of 50 ㎜ Q&T Steel Plate
Druce Patrick Dunne,Willy Pang 대한용접·접합학회 2018 대한용접·접합학회지 Vol.36 No.1
A one-pass-per-layer technique was used for narrow gap welding (NGW) of 50 ㎜ thick plate of quenched and tempered steel with 690 ㎫ minimum yield strength. GMAW and SAW were investigated for pulsed and non-pulsed welding using the same 1.2 ㎜ strength-matching welding consumable and the same nominal heat inputs for each of the pulsed and non-pulsed welds. The welds were defect-free and the hardness, tensile strength and Charpy impact energies were generally consistent with high weldment integrity. Pulsing of the welding current had the effect of slightly increasing side-wall fusion, flattening the weld bead and decreasing its volume. The most significant differences between the welds produced by GMAW and SAW were that SAW resulted in a lower peak HAZ hardness and higher HAZ Charpy values. These differences arise because different thermal cycles are associated with the two welding processes. Although the nominal heat inputs were the same, the effective heat inputs differed because of the different shielding methods and weld bead profiles. The HAZ hardness and CVN values are consistent with lower cooling rates for the SAW welds.
어린이의 배움과 삶에서 언어와 문해능력 및 그 한계점들: 초등교육과 아동기에 대한 성찰
조셉던 ( Joseph Dunne ) 한국교육철학학회(구 교육철학회) 2012 교육철학연구 Vol.34 No.1
This paper focuses on the educative role of language - first through speaking and listening and later through reading and writing. While granting the great importance of language-learning and the acquisition of literacy, the paper seeks to draw attention also to their limitations in children`s learning and living. This attention leads then to the formulation of a perspective on childhood that is quite different from, and potentially at odds with, recent emphases on literacy as a primary aim of education and a key indicator of a school-system`s effectiveness.
Azygos and right superior intercostal vein injury secondary to blunt trauma: a case report
Yaftian Nima,Dunne Benjamin,Antippa Phillip 대한외상학회 2023 大韓外傷學會誌 Vol.36 No.1
Azygos vein injuries are rare consequences of blunt trauma. When there is high drainage output from a right-sided intercostal catheter, an azygos injury must be considered in the differential diagnosis. We report the case of a 38-year-old male patient involved in a fall from a height during a motorcycle accident. Computed tomography demonstrated a large right-sided hemothorax and left-sided pneumothorax. The patient was transferred to the operating theatre and underwent a clamshell thoracotomy. A laceration in the azygos vein at the confluence of the arch of the azygos and the right superior intercostal vein was identified. Bleeding was controlled at the trifurcation. The patient survived and was discharged home on postoperative day 15.
Lacunarity analysis of fracture networks: Evidence for scale-dependent clustering
Roy, A.,Perfect, E.,Dunne, W.M.,Odling, N.,Kim, J.W. Pergamon Press 2010 Journal of structural geology Vol.32 No.10
Previous studies on fracture networks have shown that fractures contained within distinct mechanical units (''stratabound'') are regularly spaced while those that terminate within the rock mass are clustered (''non-stratabound''). Lacunarity is a parameter which can quantify the distribution of spaces between rock fractures. When normalized to account for differences in fracture abundance, lacunarity characterizes the distribution of spaces as the degree of clustering in the fracture network. Normalized lacunarity curves, L*(r), computed using the gliding-box algorithm and plotted as a function of box-size, r, were constructed for natural fracture patterns from Telpyn Point, Wales and the Hornelen basin, Norway. The results from analysis of the Telpyn Point fractures indicate that such curves are sensitive to differences in the clustering of different fracture sets at the same scale. For fracture networks mapped at different scales from the Hornelen basin, our analysis shows that clustering increases with decreasing spatial scale. This trend is attributed to the transition from a ''stratabound'' system at the scale of sedimentary cycles (100-200m) that act as distinct mechanical units to a ''non-stratabound'' fracture system geometry at the finer 10's of meters thick bedding scale.
