The spectroscopic investigation of new fluoreno-thiophene azomethines revealed that these compounds are fluorescent. However, they exhibit reduced fluorescence compared to native fluorene owing to competitive deactivation of the singlet excited state by nonradiative means involving both internal conversion and intersystem crossing. The absorption and emission wavelengths can be tuned and the HOMO-LUMO energy gap modulated from 2.0 to 3.2 eV by incorporating various electronic groups, number of azomethine bonds, and the fluorene-thiophene sequence. Electrochemical investigation confirmed that both oxidation and reduction occur resulting in irreversible radical ion formation.

박물관은 관람객의 감정 상태에 큰 관심을 보이고는 있지만, 이에 대한 조사 연구는 거 의 하지 못하고 있다. 본 연구에서는 미술관이나 역사박물관, 자연사박물관의 상설전시를 관람한 성인 들의 태도에 대해 조사하였다. 일차적으로, 어쩌면 크게 중요하지 않은 차원 에서 형식적 접근을 하였고, 이어서 관람객의 정서 작용을 파악하였다. 다음 단계로는 감 각, 감정, 기쁨, 욕망, 감정이입(공감), 몰입 그리고 개인적 취향의 표현으로 나타난다. 분 석도구는 다양한 각도에서 정서적 현상을 연구하게 된다. 즉 삶에 대한 긍정적 혹은 부정 적인 방식, 감정 표출에 대한 제한적 방식 또는 열린 방식을 탐구하고, 전시회에서의 개입 과 관련한 기원과 기능, 결과 등을 추적할 것이다.

The purpose was to examine improvements of performance and different physiological parameters in ten trained male cross-country mountain bikers after a supra-maximal interval training (SMIT) program of 8 sessions. Each session comprised 60 to 90 repeated 1-minute bouts consisting of a 20-s effort at 115% of maximal aerobic power (MAP), followed by 40-s recovery at 50% of MAP. Performance time to complete the virtual time-trial performance test was reduced significantly by -4.2%. Pulmonary sub-maximal oxygen consumption and deoxyhemoglobin in vastus lateralis decreased significantly by .4.7% and -21.9% respectively during the MAP test. Our findings suggest that SMIT program might improve performance and cycling efficiency in XC mountain bikers.

Bio-based composites provide an improved sustainability and carbon footprint compared to conventionalcomposites. In this context, this study aims in developing and characterizing green composites using a novel natural fibersfabricformed by interconnected network of fibers struts with intricate structures isolated from Opuntia (Cactaceae) asreinforcing agent in bio-based composites. Two thermoplastic polymers, which were polyvinyl alcohol and styrene-butadienerubber, were used as the matrices. Composites with 3, 6 and 9 % (w/w) fibrous networks were produced and characterized byscanning electron microscopy (SEM), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) anddynamic mechanical analysis (DMA). The DMA was performed to determine the thermomechanical and viscoelasticproperties according to the orientation distribution of the fibers. The properties of bio-based materials changed systematically,depending on the direction of axial fibers in the network and showing anisotropy of the material. Then, the dimensionalproperties and biodegradability in soil burial of the bio-based composites were investigated. The good interfacial interactionbetween the fiber and the polymer enhanced the composite performance, especially with respect to the thermal andthermomechanical properties as well as biodegradability.

This work undertook to prepare nanofibers of cellulose nanofibrils (CNF)/polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) composite by ele-ctrospinning, and characterize the electrospun composite nanofibers. Different contents of CNFs isolated from hardwood bleached kraft pulp (HW-BKP) by 2,2,6,6-tetramethylpiperidine-1-oxy radical (TEMPO)-mediated oxidation were sus-pendedin aqueous polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) solution, and then electrospun into CNF/PVA composite nanofibers. The morphology and dimension of CNFs were characterized by transmission electron microscopy (TEM), which revealed that CNFs were fibrillated form with the diameter of about 7.07 ± 0.99 nm. Morphology of the electrospun nanofiber observed by field-emission scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM) showed that uniform CNF/PVA composite nano-fiberswere manufactured at 1~3% CNF contents while many beads were observed at 5% CNF level. Both the viscosity of CNF/PVA solution and diameter of the electrospun nanofiber decreased with an increase in CNF content. The diam-eterand its distribution of the electrospun nanofibers helped explain the differences observed in their morphology. These results show that the electrospinning method was successful in preparing uniform CNF/PVA nanofibers, indicating a great potential for manufacturing consistent and reliable cellulose-based nanofibrils for scaffolds in future applications.

<P>Numerous cell types have shown a remarkable ability to detect and move along gradients in stiffness of an underlying substrate—a process known as durotaxis. The mechanisms underlying durotaxis are still unresolved, but generally believed to involve active sensing and locomotion. Here, we show that simple liquid droplets also undergo durotaxis. By modulating substrate stiffness, we obtain fine control of droplet position on soft, flat substrates. Unlike other control mechanisms, droplet durotaxis works without imposing chemical, thermal, electrical, or topographical gradients. We show that droplet durotaxis can be used to create large-scale droplet patterns and is potentially useful for many applications, such as microfluidics, thermal control, and microfabrication.</P>

<P>Contrasting with birds and mammals, poikilothermic vertebrates often have homomorphic sex chromosomes, possibly resulting from high rates of sex-chromosome turnovers and/ or occasional X-Y recombination. Strong support for the latter mechanism was provided by four species of European tree frogs, which inherited from a common ancestor (similar to 5Ma) the same pair of homomorphic sex chromosomes (linkage group 1, LG1), harboring the candidate sex-determining gene Dmrt1. Here, we test sex linkage of LG1 across six additional species of the Eurasian Hyla radiation with divergence times ranging from 6 to 40 Ma. LG1 turns out to be sex linked in six of nine resolved cases. Mapping the patterns of sex linkage to the Hyla phylogeny reveals several transitions in sex-determination systems within the last 10My, including one switch in heterogamety. Phylogenetic trees of DNA sequences along LG1 are consistent with occasional X-Y recombination in all species where LG1 is sex linked. These patterns argue against one of the main potential causes for turnovers, namely the accumulation of deleteriousmutations on nonrecombining chromosomes. Sibship analyses show that LG1 recombination is strongly reduced in males from most species investigated, including some in which it is autosomal. Intrinsically low male recombination might facilitate the evolution of male heterogamety, and the presence of important genes from the sex-determination cascade might predispose LG1 to become a sex chromosome.</P>
