The abundance of bacteria inhabiting the sedimentwater interface and their taxonomic composition were determined with the fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH) method in a marine harbor channel in Ustka. Among bacteria inhabiting the studied layer Gammaproteobacteria (1.4 cells 108·dm-3) and Cytophaga-Flavobacterium (1.1 cells 108·dm-3) dominated. Vibrio and Pseudomonas represented only a small fraction of the total cell counts. All taxonomic groups of studied bacteria show significant positive correlation between their abundance. The total bacterial number varied from 3.3 to 23.5 cells 108·dm-3 and their biomass oscillated from 39.4 to 282.4 μg C·dm-3. This parameter differed along horizontal profiles, while there were no significant differences in the abundance of the studied taxonomic groups among the study sites of the channel in Ustka. The total number of bacteria as well as the abundance of bacterial phylogenetic groups were subject to seasonal fluctuation in the studied water basin.

This study verified the effects of a physical exercise program performed at Basic Healthcare Units on the body composition and functional capacity of women over 50 years old and to compare these variables according to age. Forty-eight women (age, 65.4± 7.3 years) were assessed. The program lasted 20 weeks, and was conducted 2 times per week, 60 min/day. Body mass and height were collected and body mass index (BMI) was calculated. Bioelectrical impedance was used to estimate fat mass and fat free mass. Functional capacities: handgrip test, Timed Up and Go (TUG) test, and Guralnick test were assessment. Weight (68.7± 12.5 [pre]× 66.8± 12.5 [post], P< 0.001), BMI (28.5± 4.1 kg/ m2 [pre]× 27.6± 4.0 kg/m2 [post], P< 0.001), and fat mass (28.4± 7.8 kg [pre]× 26.4± 7.3 kg [post], P< 0.001) were decreased. For functional capacity, handgrip (21.2± 5.8 kg [pre]× 22.9± 6.9 kg [post], P= 0.014), lower limb strength (12.0± 3.0 sec [pre]× 8.5± 2.2 sec [post], P< 0.001), TUG (8.4 ±1.5 sec [pre] ×7.6 ±1.1 se [post], P<0.001) and Guralnik tests (10.6± 1.6 [pre]× 11.8± 0.5 [post], P< 0.001) were improved. 20 weeks of exercise program performed at Basic Healthcare Units decreased body fat and improvement of functional capacity of women over 50 years old and there was difference according to age only on the body composition variables.

Mirjana Rodošek,Lidija Slemenik Perše,Mohor Mihelčič,Matjaž Koželj,Boris Orel,Başak Bengű,Onder Sunetci,Pauli Pori,Angela Šurca Vuk 대한금속·재료학회 2014 ELECTRONIC MATERIALS LETTERS Vol.10 No.5
Fluoropolymer conformal coatings were applied to electronic boards (EBs) and cured at room temperature or 80°C. The coatings were first deposited on model substrate, i.e. aluminium alloy AA 2024 and tested for their anticorrosion properties with a potentiodynamic polarisation technique. The cathodic current densities ranged from 10−9 - 10−10 A/cm2, approaching the lower current limit after the addition of TiO2 nanoparticles into the formulation. Application of fluoropolymer-based formulation was performed via spray-coating deposition. Examination of the coverage of EBs under UV light, which is commonly used in industry, revealed that some components might not be entirely covered. In the search for other possible analytical tools of coverage with protective coatings, optical microscopy and confocal Raman spectroscopy were investigated.
In Troubled Water? European Sports Clubs: Their Problems, Capacities and Opportunities
Ørnulf Seippel,Christoph Breuer,Karsten Elmose-Østerlund,Svenja Feiler,Szilvia Perényi,Monika Piątkowska,Jeroen Scheerder 글로벌지식마케팅경영학회 2023 Journal of Global Sport Management Vol.8 No.1
We study problems experienced by sports clubs from nine European countries – Belgium (Flanders), Denmark, England, Germany, Hungary, the Netherlands, Norway, Poland, and Spain – and factors – national characteristics and organizational capacities – explaining variation in problem perceptions. Data is surveys of more than 30,000 sport clubs. We investigate five types of club problems: recruitment/retention of members, recruitment/reten- tion of volunteers at the board level, recruitment/retention of coaches/instructors, financial situation of clubs and availability of sport facilities. We found that human resource problems were widespread in Denmark and Germany and least common in Belgium. In Hungary, Poland, and Spain, finances and facilities stood out as the most reported problems. Some capacities – negative financial balance, planning capacity and social climate – have systematic and direct implications for those involved, whereas others – size and professionalization – are more difficult to interpret systematically and harder to link to strategic policy actions.

Summary

Background

Activation of the PI3K/AKT/mTOR pathway occurs frequently in breast cancer that is resistant to endocrine therapy. Approved mTOR inhibitors effectively inhibit cell growth and proliferation but elicit AKT phosphorylation via a feedback activation pathway, potentially leading to resistance to mTOR inhibitors. We evaluated the efficacy and safety of buparlisib plus fulvestrant in patients with advanced breast cancer who were pretreated with endocrine therapy and mTOR inhibitors.

Methods

BELLE-3 was a randomised, double-blind, placebo-controlled, multicentre, phase 3 study. Postmenopausal women aged 18 years or older with histologically or cytologically confirmed hormone-receptor-positive, HER2-negative, locally advanced or metastatic breast cancer, who had relapsed on or after endocrine therapy and mTOR inhibitors, were recruited from 200 trial centres in 22 countries. Eligible patients were randomly assigned (2:1) via interactive response technology (block size of six) to receive oral buparlisib (100 mg per day) or matching placebo starting on day 1 of cycle 1, plus intramuscular fulvestrant (500 mg) on days 1 and 15 of cycle 1 and on day 1 of subsequent 28-day cycles. Randomisation was stratified by visceral disease status. The primary endpoint was progression-free survival by local investigator assessment as per the Response Evaluation Criteria In Solid Tumors (RECIST) version 1.1 in the full analysis population (all randomised patients, by intention-to-treat). Safety was analysed in all patients who received at least one dose of treatment and at least one post-baseline safety assessment. This study is registered with ClinicalTrials.gov, number NCT01633060, and is ongoing but no longer enrolling patients.

Findings

Between Jan 15, 2013, and March 31, 2016, 432 patients were randomly assigned to the buparlisib (n=289) or placebo (n=143) groups. Median progression-free survival was significantly longer in the buparlisib versus placebo group (3·9 months [95% CI 2·8–4·2] vs 1·8 months [1·5–2·8]; hazard ratio [HR] 0·67, 95% CI 0·53–0·84, one-sided p=0·00030). The most frequent grade 3–4 adverse events in the buparlisib versus placebo group were elevated alanine aminotransferase (63 [22%] of 288 patients vs four [3%] of 140), elevated aspartate aminotransferase (51 [18%] vs four [3%]), hyperglycaemia (35 [12%] vs none), hypertension (16 [6%] vs six [4%]), and fatigue (ten [3%] vs two [1%]). Serious adverse events were reported in 64 (22%) of 288 patients in the buparlisib group versus 23 (16%) of 140 in the placebo group; the most frequent serious adverse events (affecting ≥2% of patients) were elevated aspartate aminotransferase (six [2%] vs none), dyspnoea (six [2%] vs one [1%]), and pleural effusion (six [2%] vs none). On-treatment deaths occurred in ten (3%) of 288 patients in the buparlisib group and in six (4%) of 140 in the placebo group; most deaths were due to metastatic breast cancer, and two were considered treatment-related (cardiac failure [n=1] in the buparlisib group and unknown reason [n=1] in the placebo group).

Interpretation

The safety profile of buparlisib plus fulvestrant does not support its further development in this setting. Nonetheless, the efficacy of buparlisib supports the rationale for the use of PI3K inhibitors plus endocrine therapy in patients with PIK3CA mutations.

Funding

Novartis Pharmaceuticals Corporation.

Immunotherapy with specific antibodies is an alternative to antibiotics for the prevention of infections in hu-mans and animals. We have used orally administered immunoglobulin Y (IgY) preparations, purified from eggs of hens im-munized with Pseudomonas aeruginosabacteria, to prevent pulmonary P. aeruginosainfections in a group of patients withcystic fibrosis (CF). Respiratory infections are major problems for CF patients because of the thick mucus in the airways, andchronic P. aeruginosalung infections occur in virtually all CF patients and cause morbidity and mortality. The IgY-treatedgroup had only 2.5 P. aeruginosa-positive sputum cultures per 100 months, and none of the IgY-treated patients becamechronically colonized with P. aeruginosa. In the control group, 13.7 of the cultures per 100 months were positive for P. aerug-inosa, and 24% of patients became chronically colonized with P. aeruginosa. The first enrolled patient in this study has nowbeen treated continuously for more than 10 years. During the first 8 years she only had four P. aeruginosa-positive cultures. After 8 years she became chronically infected, but still after 10 years the bacteria have not turned mucoid. No negative sideeffects of IgY treatment have been noted during these 10 years. To our knowledge this is the longest treatment with specificyolk antibodies for therapeutic purposes.
Definition of Antenna Diversity Gain in User-Distributed 3D-Random Line-of-Sight
Per-Simon Kildal,Ulf Carlberg,Jan Carlsson 한국전자파학회JEES 2013 Journal of Electromagnetic Engineering and Science Vol.13 No.2
The present paper defines diversity gain for stationary users. This deals in particular with gathering the received signal statistics over possible user positions and orientations in space rather than over time, and to define a meaningful diversity gain related to the cumulative improvement of the performances of the 1% users with the worst receiving conditions. The definition is used to evaluate diversity gain for some typical small antennas in an extreme environment with only line-of-sight (LOS). The LOS environment is regarded as user-distributed 3D-random LOS caused by the statistics of an ensemble of stationary users with arbitrary orientations in the horizontal plane (2D), and with arbitrary orientations of their wireless devices in the vertical plane. Thus, an overall 3D-random distribution of user orientation is assumed.
