Toxicological Characterization of Phthalic Acid
Bang, Du-Yeon,Lee, In-Kyung,Lee, Byung-Mu Korean Society of ToxicologyKorea Environmental Mu 2011 Toxicological Research Vol.27 No.4
There has been growing concern about the toxicity of phthalate esters. Phthalate esters are being used widely for the production of perfume, nail varnish, hairsprays and other personal/cosmetic uses. Recently, exposure to phthalates has been assessed by analyzing urine for their metabolites. The parent phthalate is rapidly metabolized to its monoester (the active metabolite) and also glucuronidated, then excreted. The objective of this study is to evaluate the toxicity of phthalic acid (PA), which is the final common metabolic form of phthalic acid esters (PAEs). The individual PA isomers are extensively employed in the synthesis of synthetic agents, for example isophthalic acid (IPA), and terephthalic acid (TPA), which have very broad applications in the preparation of phthalate ester plasticizers and components of polyester fiber, film and fabricated items. There is a broad potential for exposure by industrial workers during the manufacturing process and by the general public (via vehicle exhausts, consumer products, etc). This review suggests that PA shows in vitro and in vivo toxicity (mutagenicity, developmental toxicity, reproductive toxicity, etc.). In addition, PA seems to be a useful biomarker for multiple exposure to PAEs in humans.

Experiments on an upgraded RBC were conducted to investigate its removal efficiencies of NH_4^-N, coliform group and coliphage in the municipal wastewater treatment. A bench scale RBC, made of stainless mesh media with 5㎜ high surface protrusions, was fed with settled municipal wastewater containing 13-25㎎/L of NH_4^-N and 40-75㎎/L of TOC at the hydraulic loading of 89ℓ/㎡.d and 60ℓ/㎡.d. It was found that the nitrification effectively occurred at bulk liquid TOC concentration of less than 10㎎/L. The coliform group and coliphage were more than 98% and 90%, respectively.

Postemetic rupture of the esophagus is an intrathoracic catastrophe which is universally fatal if untreated immediately. We have experienced one case of Boerhaave`s syndrome at the Thoracic & Cardiovascular Surgery Yonsei University College of Medicine. He was 56 years old male who complained severe chest-pain, dyspnea with sudden vomiting after alcohol. Esophagogram showed barium leakage through rupture site on lower esophagus into left thoracic cavity. He had taken repair of the rupture site of lower esophagus and wrapping it with the body of the stomach wall because of relatively clean rupture margin even though 48 hours following the rupture. He has been uneventful in post-operative courses & he discharged with good conditions.

Segmental resection or wedge resection of the lung and direct cutting across of bronchi frequently results in postoperative airleaks or bronchopleural fistula in some cases. Many methods have been devised to handle air leak problems by oversuturing the raw edges, the application of pleural onlay flaps, the use of cautery or tissue adhesives, but these still has not solved the problem of air leaking from raw surfaces of the lung with only partial successful we have tried the use of histoacryl to closure the raw surface of the resected lung and compared it’s results with of the closure with chromic catgut sutures in cats from May 1989 to Jan. 1990 at the department of the thoracic and cardiovascular surgery, Yonsei University, College of Medicine. Ninety lobe of the lungs were used in this study and forty nine of which have been divided segmentally and closed with histoacryl on the raw surfaces. Forty one of which have been divided segmentally and closed with sutures using chromic catgut for control. There were air leakages in twelve cases among 49 cases with applying histoacryl and airleak were in two cases among 12 cases with reapply histoacryl, But there were air leak in two cases among 41 cases with sutures using chromic catgut and airleak were in one case among with resutures using chromic catgut.
