        Zeolite properties improvement by chitosan modification—Sorption studies

        In the paper the potential of chitosan modified zeolite (NaP1CS) as a cheap adsorbent for methylene blue(MB) removal from aqueous solutions was determined. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy analyses,nitrogen adsorption/desorption isotherms and scanning electron microscope were applied tocharacterize the adsorbent. Batch adsorption studies were carried out to examine effects of variousfactors such as pH, contact time, initial MB and Cu(II) concentrations, temperature influence on thesorption process. The impact of different ways of zeolites modification with chitosan on sorption capacityand the comparison of adsorption of unmodified zeolite andfly ash are presented. The effect of differentmetal ions such as Cu(II), Zn(II), Mn(II), Fe(III) and also that of foreign ions on the MB sorption were alsostudied. The pseudo-first order, pseudo-second order and intraparticle diffusion models werefitted tothe kinetic data. The bestfit was achieved with both the pseudo-second order and intraparticle diffusionmodels. The experimental equilibrium data were evaluated by the Langmuir, Freundlich, Temkin andDubinin-Radushkevich isotherm models. The calculated thermodynamic parameters indicated aspontaneous and endothermic sorption process. Desorption studies were carried out with differentdesorbing agents. HCl proved to be the most effective desorption agent for MB and Cu(II).

      • Multi-Sensor Personal Navigator : System Design and Calibration

        This paper presents the current design status and some preliminary calibration/performance analyses of the prototype of a multi-sensor personal navigator currently under development at The Ohio State University. The main purpose of this research project is to develop a theoretical foundation and algorithms which integrate the Global Positioning System (GPS), Micro-electro-mechanical inertial measurement unit (MEMS IMU), barometer and compass to provide seamless position information to support navigation and tracking of ground military and rescue personnel. The system is designed with an open-ended architecture, which would be able to incorporate additional navigation and imaging sensor data, extending the system’s operations to the indoor environments. The current target accuracy of the system is at 3-5 m CEP (circular error probable). In the current prototype implementation, the following sensors are integrated in the tightly coupled Extended Kalman Filter (EKF): GPS carrier phase and pseudorange data, Crossbow MEMS IMU400C, PTB220A barometer, and KVH Azimuth 1000 digital compass. This paper focuses on the design architecture of the integrated system and the preliminary performance analysis, with a special emphasis on the navigation during the loss of GPS signal. A brief description of the individual sensors and their calibration is presented, together with the navigation performance of the system of sensors. In addition, the system’s architecture designed to incorporate a simplified dynamic model of human locomotion is introduced. The system is trained during the GPS signal reception and is subsequently used to support navigation under no GPS signal. The stride parameters (step frequency and length), extracted from GPS data and the timed impact switches during the system calibration period, and the heading information from the compass and the IMU support the dead reckoning navigation, during the gaps in GPS signals. Some information included here is also presented in (Grejner-Brzezinska et al., 2006).

        Status niekonotowanych fraz celownikowychwe współczesnej polszczyźnie a delimitacja jednostek języka

        The author describes a certain type of non-obligatory dative phrases, interpreted as dativus ethicus, dativus possesivus, dativus commodi and dativus incommodi, cf. Ładny mi przyjaciel., Syn nam się rozchorował., Ugotowałam ojcu obiad. The analysis of dative phrases does not include the multifunctional Polish expression sobie. Most common usage of dative in the Polish language (as an obligatory valency slot ) is to refer to the real recipient or beneficiary of an action. It is also used as some sort of commentary, when one wants to show their commitment to the action and when one feels like a quasi-recipient of this action (as an non-obligatory valency slot). The author provides her own interpretation of the function of non-obligatory dative phrases in Contemporary Polish Language. The author also considers a number of problems with interpreting dative forms in sentences as non-obligatory phrases or as required arguments (immanent parts of language units). In the article, units of language are understood as separate entities (continuous or discontinuous) to which (in most cases) a single meaning is assigned. As regards valency slots, they are treated as immanent parts of expressions, unlike lexemes filling these slots in an utterance. The procedure of language-unit delimitation aims at identifying exactly those elements, the detachment of which would result in the unit losing its semantic properties.

        We find necessary and sufficient conditions for a para-Kahlerian manifold to be paraholomorphically pseudosymmetric in terms of the paraholomorphic projective and Bochner curvatures. New examples of such spaces are proposed.         Kinetic models of quality parameters of spreadable processed Gouda cheese during storage

        The aim of the study was to prepare mathematical models based on the Arrhenius equation as predictive tools for the assessment of changes in quality parameters during the storage of spreadable Gouda cheese at temperatures of 8, 20 and 30 C. The activation energy value and the chemical reaction rate constant enabled the construction of kinetic models, which helped to estimate the direction and rate of changes. Moreover, the activation energy (Ea) of the quality parameters was used to determine the sequence of their vulnerability during storage. The value of activation energy corresponding to temperature changes resulted in the following order of susceptibility of the quality parameters: DC[DE & water activity[texture parameters[pH[colour[sensory parameters[rheological parameters. The research showed limited applicability of the mathematical models for estimation of quality parameters referring to spreadable processed Gouda cheese.

        The aqueous photosensitized degradation of butylparaben

        The photosensitized oxidation of butyl p-hydroxybenzoate (butylparaben, BP), the endocrine disrupting compound, in aqueous solution using rose bengal (RB) and aluminium phthalocyanine chloride tetrasulfonic acid (PC) as sensitizers was examined. A xenon lamp simulating solar radiation was used as a light source. The influence of pH of the reaction mixture, oxygen content, irradiation intensity and initial sensitizers and BP concentration on the reaction rate was studied. Based on the kinetic model, the rate constants of singlet oxygen quenching and reaction with BP as well as the rate constant of excited sensitizer quenching by BP were determined.

        Predictive Modelling of Lactobacillus casei KN291 Survival in Fermented Soy Beverage

        The aim of the study was to construct and verify predictivegrowth and survival models of a potentially probiotic bacteriain fermented soy beverage. The research material includednatural soy beverage (Polgrunt, Poland) and the strainof lactic acid bacteria (LAB) – Lactobacillus casei KN291. To construct predictive models for the growth and survivalof L. casei KN291 bacteria in the fermented soy beveragewe design an experiment which allowed the collection ofCFU data. Fermented soy beverage samples were stored atvarious temperature conditions (5, 10, 15, and 20°C) for 28days. On the basis of obtained data concerning the survivalof L. casei KN291 bacteria in soy beverage at different temperatureand time conditions, two non-linear models (r2=0.68–0.93) and two surface models (r2=0.76–0.79) were constructed;these models described the behaviour of the bacteriain the product to a satisfactory extent. Verification of the surfacemodels was carried out utilizing the validation data - at7°C during 28 days. It was found that applied models werewell fitted and charged with small systematic errors, whichis evidenced by accuracy factor - Af, bias factor - Bf and meansquared error - MSE. The constructed microbiological growthand survival models of L. casei KN291 in fermented soybeverage enable the estimation of products shelf life period,which in this case is defined by the requirement for the levelof the bacteria to be above 106 CFU/cm3. The constructedmodels may be useful as a tool for the manufacture of probioticfoods to estimate of their shelf life period.

      • Spectroscopic assessment of the role of hydrogen in surface defects, in the electronic structure and transport properties of TiO<sub>2</sub>, ZnO and SnO<sub>2</sub> nanoparticles

        <P>The interaction of metal oxides with gases is very important for the operation of energy devices such as fuel cells and gas sensors, and also relevant for materials synthesis and processing. The electronic transport properties of metal oxides for the aforementioned devices strongly depend on the chemistry of these gases and on the presence or absence of defects on the surface and in the bulk. The Debye screening length is in this respect a material specific property which becomes particularly significant when the material is comprised of nanoparticles. In the present study, poly-crystalline TiO<SUB>2</SUB>, ZnO and SnO<SUB>2</SUB> nanoparticles were synthesized by a high temperature flame spray combustion process and investigated for their interaction with hydrogen. The chemistry of the reduced and oxidized surfaces of these metal oxides, where the interaction with gases takes place, was investigated in detail with X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). The transitions found near <I>E</I><SUB>F</SUB> with XPS are consistent with those found by diffuse reflectance spectroscopy (DRS) and were assigned to surface states originating from non-equilibrium oxygen vacancies. We show how the non-stoichiometric character of the metal oxide surface constitutes electronic surface defects, in particular oxygen vacancies which allow for additional transitions near the Fermi energy (<I>E</I><SUB>F</SUB>). The concentration of these surface defects can be strongly reduced by thermal after-treatment under air or increased by Ar<SUP>+</SUP>-sputtering, after which significant spectral features appear near <I>E</I><SUB>F</SUB>. Such prominent changes are particularly observed for TiO<SUB>2</SUB> and SnO<SUB>2</SUB>, whereas the stoichiometry of the ZnO surface seems to be less responsive to such reducing and oxidizing conditions. Pronounced changes of the electrical conductivity upon changing from reducing to oxidizing conditions at elevated temperatures were monitored by electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS). The lowering of the potential barrier for the charge transport particularly at lower temperatures already at reducing conditions is confirmed. The impedance response indicates that charge transfer is governed predominantly by one single process, <I>i.e.</I> by interaction of surface-like states localized within depletion layer with gas molecules. This implies that the free charge carriers in the material are determined by the intrinsic property like non-stoichiometry. Gas sensors made from such FSS nanoparticulate metal oxides showed well developed sensing characteristics of the hydrogen sensing at moderate temperatures.</P> <P>Graphic Abstract</P><P>The role of the reducing conditions in the metal oxides stoichiometry, electronic structure and resulting lowering of the potential barrier for the charge transport is evidenced by complicity of the XPS, DRS and EIS. <IMG SRC='http://pubs.rsc.org/services/images/RSCpubs.ePlatform.Service.FreeContent.ImageService.svc/ImageService/image/GA?id=c2cp42601c'> </P>
