Growth Mechanism and Electrochemical Properties of Porous Hollow Tin Oxide Nanospheres

        Youwen Yang,Dongming Ma,Ting Cheng,Yuanhao Gao,Guanghai Li 성균관대학교(자연과학캠퍼스) 성균나노과학기술원 2015 NANO Vol.10 No.6

"Porous hollow SnO2 nanospheres were prepared by means of enforced Sn2+ hydrolysis method under hydrochloric acid medium. These hollow nanospheres with an average diameter of 220 nm had a very thin shell thickness of about 40 nm and were surrounded by elongated octahedral-like nanoparticles with the apex oriented outside. The experimental conditions, such as HCl content, reaction temperature and time directly dominated the morphology, structure and crystallinity of the obtained samples. A pre-oxidation-nucleation-growth mechanism and inside-out Ostwald-ripening method was proposed on the basis of the previous research and time-dependent experiments. Electrochemical tests showed that the porous hollow SnO2 nanospheres exhibited improved cycling performance for anode materials of lithium-ion batteries, which retained a high reversible capacity of 540.0 mAhg-1 , and stable cyclic retention at 120th cycle."

The Effect of the Major Components of Fructus Cnidii on Osteoblasts In Vitro

        Wenping Zhang,Dongming Ma,Qiduo Zhao,Torao Ishida 사단법인약침학회 2010 Journal of Acupuncture & Meridian Studies Vol.3 No.1

In traditional Chinese medicine, the cause of weak bones or bone loss is generally regarded as a result of kidney deficiency. Fructus Cnidii (FC), which is also known as She-Chuang-Zi, is a traditional herb that has been claimed to have kidney warming effects that invigorate Yang. In this study, we tried to determine the bone production-inducing effect of FC on osteoblastic cells in vitro using osthole, the main component of FC. Osteoblasts were isolated from neonatal Sprague-Dawley rat calvaria using the tissue piece culture method and treated with various concentrations of osthole ranging from 2.5 to 640 μg/mL, together with a blank control. Cell proliferation, alkaline phosphatase (ALP) activity, and bone nodules were measured. The cells were examined by hematoxylin-eosin staining, the Gomori Calcium-Cobalt method and immunofluorescent staining. The 3-(4,5-dimethylthiazol-2yl)-2,5-diphenyl tetrazolium bromide (or MTT) assay, ALP assay, and bone nodule results indicated significantly enhanced osteoblastic proliferation and differentiation at concentrations of osthole ranging from 40 to 320 μg/mL. Concentrations lower than 40 μg/mL seemed less effective, and cytotoxicity to osteoblasts was observed at concentrations higher than 320 μg/mL. These results indicate that osthole is effective at inducing osteoblastic bone formation through the up-regulation of ALP activity. FC is a Chinese herb used to treat lumbar pain in clinical practice. Further studies concerning the effects and mechanism of osthole on osteoporotic patients and animals should be performed, as these studies may lead to the development of a drug treatment for osteoporosis in the future.

Electrophysiologic Characteristics of Nitrous-Oxide-Associated Peripheral Neuropathy: A Retrospective Study of 76 Patients

        Xiuying Fang,Miao Yu,Dongming Zheng,Han Gao,Weishuai Li,Ying Ma 대한신경과학회 2023 Journal of Clinical Neurology Vol.19 No.1

Background and Purpose The electrophysiologic characteristics of peripheral neuropathy secondary to nitrous oxide (N2O) abuse remain unclear. The paper therefore aimed to summarize the electrophysiologic characteristics of N2O-associated peripheral neuropathy and identify the risk factors of severe nerve injury. Methods The electrophysiologic results and clinical data of patients with peripheral neuropathy secondary to N2O abuse at our hospital between 2018 and 2020 were analyzed retrospectively, and their electrophysiologic changes were summarized. Results Most patients exhibited decreased sensory and motor nerve conduction velocities (75% and 76%), decreased sensory nerve and compound motor action potentials (57% and 59%), and prolonged distal motor latency (59%), while a response was absent in 36%. These findings indicate that N2O abuse can result in generalized injury to sensory and motor nerves. Electrophysiologic results indicated axonal neuropathy in 37 cases (49%), demyelinating peripheral neuropathy in 4 (5%), and mixed neuropathy in 12 (16%). Peripheral nerve injury was more common in the lower limbs (72%) than in the upper limbs (42%, p<0.0001). The upper and lower limbs were primarily affected by sensory nerve demyelination (35%) and motor axonal injury (67%), respectively. Subgroup analysis indicated that longer N2O exposure and longer disease course were associated with more-severe motor axonal injury in the lower limbs. Conclusions N2O-associated peripheral neuropathy can lead to sensory and motor nerve injury, with axonal injury being the most common. Injuries were more severe in the lower limbs. Prolonged N2O exposure and disease course increased the severity of motor axonal injury in the lower limbs.
