Subcutaneous implantation of a cardiac implantable electronic device is the standard method. Occasionally, subpectoral cardiac implantable electronic device (CIED) implantation via axillary incisions is performed in young female patients for cosmetic purposes. Because subpectoral CIED implantation and augmentation mammoplasty involve the same layer, it is feasible to perform both procedures simultaneously. We report a case of combined subpectoral implantation of an implantable cardioverter-defibrillator and augmentation mammoplasty via the axillary approach in a young female patient with dilated cardiomyopathy and small breasts.

The objective of this research was to evaluate the inhibitory activities of phenolic compounds isolated from Cheomoknosang callus on Helicobacter pylori. Total phenolic compounds of 80% ethanol extracts from callus were 15.3 ㎎/g. The activity of H. pylori inhibition at 80% ethanol extracts from Cheongmoknosang callus was determined as 14 ㎜ clear zone. Isolation of inhibitory compounds was carried out on Sephadex LH-20 and MCI-gel CHP-20 column chromatography using a gradient elution procedure of increasing MeOH in H₂O. The chemical structure of the inhibitory compound against Helicobacter pylori was confirmed as protocatechuic acid, chlorogenic acid, caffeic acid and rosemarinic acid by spectroscopic analysis of FAB-MS, NMR and IR spectrum.

Abstract: The cytosolic fraction of soybean sprouts contains three PI-specific PLC enzymes (F-Ⅰ, F-Ⅱ, and F-Ⅲ), which can be separated by Matrex green gel chromatography. Their catalytic properties are different from each other in their requirements for Ca^(2+) and sodium deoxycholate. The expression of these enzymes under various conditions are growth-stage specific and tissue specific. The F-Ⅱ fraction was especially active during the early growth stage. However, the activities of the F-Ⅰ and F-Ⅲ fractions gradually increased from the early to late growth stages. The specific activity of individual PLC enzymes in soybean sprout tissue did not show the same pattern. Among the various soybean sprout tissues, higher PLC activity appeared in the actively elongating hypocotyl tissue. Light, 2,4-D, and BA slightly induced the activities of all three PLC enzymes. On nondenaturing polyacrylamide gels, the PI hydrolyzing activities of F-Ⅰ and F-Ⅱ appeared as a single peak, while the F-Ⅲ activity was divided into two separate peaks. Since the molecular weight of the upper PLC activity peak of F-Ⅲ was nearly twice that of the lower peak, F-Ⅲ PLC may exist as a mixture of monomer and dimeric enzymes.

Purpose: We performed this study to investigate the incidence and clinical significance of acquired von Willebrand syndrome (AVWS) in adult patients treated with extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO). Methods: We reviewed medical records of adult patients (age ≥ 19 years) admitted to medical intensive care unit for ECMO support between January 2019 and June 2019. The AVWS was defined as the ratio of ristocetin cofactor activity to von Willebrand factor antigen (vWF:RCo/vWF:Ag) < 0.7 or any abnormality in von Willebrand factor multimer analysis. Clinical characteristics and outcomes were compared between AVWS and non-AVWS groups. Results: During the study period, 25 patients had received ECMO support and 19 (76.0%) patients had completed the laboratory tests for AVWS. Among 19 patients included, median age was 63 years (interquartile ranges [IQR]: 54-65) and 13 (68.4%) were male. Median duration of ECMO support was 6 days (IQR: 3-18) and 14 (73.7%) were supported with veno-venous configuration. The AVWS was diagnosed in 12 (63.2%) patients. The incidence of hemorrhagic complication was significantly higher in AVWS group (91.7% [n=11/12] in AVWS group and 42.9% [n=3/7] in non-AVWS group, p=0.038). However, there were no significant differences in other clinical outcomes including intensive care unit mortality (25.0% [n=3/12] in AVWS group and 28.6% [n=2/7] in non-AVWS group, p >0.999) and hospital mortality (33.3% [n=4/12] in AVWS group and 42.9% [n=3/7] in non-AVWS group, p>0.999). Conclusions: AVWS is common but under-recognized in adult patients treated with ECMO. The AVWS seems to be associated with hemorrhagic complications during ECMO support, but its significance on mortality is unclear.

Nano-powders of Ni and Al2O3 were synthesized from NiO and Al powders by high energy ball milling. The nanocrystalline Al2O3 - reinfored composite was consolidated by a pulsed current activated sintering(PCAS)) method within 2 minutes from mechanically synthesized powders of Al2O3 and 3Ni. The average hardness and fracture toughness values obtained were 690 kg/mm² and 6.1MPa·m½, respectively.
