The most widely used concept in applications of random signal is the power spectrum. This concept is central in system theory, optics, spectroscopy, oil exploration, earthquake analysis and many other area. In such applications, a common problem is the estimation of the spectrum in terms of given data. The signal can be modeled by ARMA model. Using this model, spectral estimation problem can be reduced to estimate the ARMA coefficients and order determination problem. The order determination techniques, such as singularity test and Gram-Schmidt orthonormalization are presented. And numerical performance is improved by using normalized correlation coefficients. Extended least squares method with boot strapping procedure for ARMA spectral estimation is also presented. By using lattice structure, this method improves hardware implementation and provides an efficient computational procedure for performing adaptive processing. Finally, Computer simulations are presented to illustrate above methods

A case of a female Manic Depressive Illness patient with goitrous hypothyroidism is presented. After ten and half months of lithium maintenance therapy starting during her first psychiatric admission, she was admitted again due to acute recurrent manic episode. On admission, she complained of easy fatigability and cold intolerance, and thyroid gland was palpable and enlarged in moderate degree. Thyroid function test revealed markedly increased TSH and moderately decreased thyroxine levels. TRH stimulation test showed an exaggerated response. Needle biopsy specimen revealed chronic lymphocytic and immune complex thyroiditis. However, antithyroglobulin and antimicrosomal antibodies were negative. In pretreatment thyroid evaluation on her first admission, neither goiter nor thyroid function abnormality was detectable and no signs of underlying thyroid disease or hereditary predisposition to hypothyroidism were present. Within three weeks of discontinuation of lithium, goiter was no more palpable and within five weeks, thyroid function test returned to normal range. The possibility that patients with underlying thyroiditis may be particularly susceptible to a rapid onset of lithium-induced hypothyroidism is discussed.
릴레이 궤환을 이용한 PID제어기 상수의 자동 조정에 관한 연구

In this paper, Auto-tuning methods for parameter tuning of the PID controller is proposed. The existing methods of parameter tuning rules is compared with the proposed method, and the simple robust estimation technique is introduced. The tuning procedure is as follows : The relay feedback loop are added to the system to obtain the critical gain and critical period. Then appropriate test signal is generated automatically using the relay control, the controller parameter is calculated by using the Ziegler-Nichols parameter setting rule. Also the sensitivity on error and noise are reduced by using the hysteresis characteristic of relay, and the controller for the time-varying system is presented using the resetting of the PID parameters in case that the sum of errors is greater than the dead zone.

Polysomnography is an essential methodology for diagnosing and following up sleep disorders and doing researches on human steep. Sleep medicine, mainly with the utilization of polysomnographic techniques, has developed itself as one of the promising fields in the 21st century medicine. Korea is not an exception in importing and developing sleep medicine into the conventional medicine. However, it still remains to be clarified what polysomnography is for and how it should be done, considering the relatively recent introduction of sleep medicine into Korea. The author, being a board-certified sleep medicine specailist, having experienced spreading out sleep medicine within Korea for the past four years, and having recently set up a major sleep study facility in Korea at Seoul National University Hospital, attempts in this introductory critical article to review the essential issues related to quality assurance in polysomnographic study of human sleep. Also, unconditional introduction of “automated” sleep scoring system, which has been found to have significantly reduced reliability in various studies including the author's own, is critically reviewed. The author suggests that quality assurance and training program should be initiated and established by a responsible sleep medicine-related organization such as the Korean Association of Sleep Medicine and Psychophysiology.
근전도 바이오피이드백을 이용한 불안장애 환자 및 정상인의 근육긴장도에 관한 비교연구

For the purpose of comparing muscle tension level and muscle relaxibility between anxiety disorder patients and normal controls, frontalis EMG levels of 28 anxiety disorder patients (male 14, female 14) and 40 normal controls (male 22, female 18)were measured. The results were as follows: 1) The mean value of EMG basal levels of the anxiety disorder group were 2.38㎶ for male and 2.89㎶ for female, which did not prove to be significantly different from those in the control group (1.77㎶ for male and 3.17㎶ for female). 2) In both male and female groups, anxiety disorder patients and normal controls were significantly different from each other in the mean EMG level on relaxation trial and this was consistent with the findings by the analysis of covariance. The result suggested that muscle relaxibility of the anxiety disorder group was significantly lower than that of the normal control group. 3) In 36% of anxiety disorder patient, paradoxical rise of the muscle tension above the basal(resting) level was noted on relaxation trial.
