Vol.32 No.4

This paper analyzes the life cycle behavior of household’s labor income in Mexico, and its differences across income deciles, using the data from the 2018 National Survey of Household Income and Expenditures (ENIGH) in Mexico. Our results show that, controlling for education, salary grows faster for households within the higher deciles compared to those in the lower ones. Households in the higher deciles also have longer periods of income growth. The results suggest that even with similar education levels, salary inequality prevails, which is probably due to inequality of opportunities for the different social groups.

      • Enhancing Role of Nickel in the Nickel–Palladium Bilayer for Electrocatalytic Oxidation of Ethanol in Alkaline Media

del Rosario, Julie Anne D.,Ocon, Joey D.,Jeon, Hongrae,Yi, Youngmi,Lee, Jae Kwang,Lee, Jaeyoung American Chemical Society 2014 The Journal of Physical Chemistry Part C Vol.118 No.39

Direct ethanol fuel cells (DEFCs) have been widely studied because of their potential as a high-energy density and low-toxicity power source of the future. Suitable catalysts for the anode reaction, however, are necessary to fully utilize the advantages of DEFCs. In this paper, we fabricated nickel (Ni)–palladium (Pd) bimetallic catalysts with a bilayer structure, using sputtering deposition on a titanium (Ti) foil substrate, and investigated the activity and stability of the catalysts toward ethanol electro-oxidation in alkaline media. Our results suggest that while Pd is the active component and Ni has negligible activity toward ethanol oxidation, Ni-modified Pd (NiPd/Ti) provides the best activity in comparison to PdNi/Ti and the monometallic catalysts. In fact, optimizing the Ni amount could lead to a highly active and stable bimetallic electrocatalyst because of Ni’s ability to increase the active surface area of the Pd layer, provide hydroxyl species to replenish the active sites, and act as a protective layer to the Pd. Overall, these results provide a better understanding on the role of Ni in bimetallic catalysts, especially in a bilayer configuration, to allow the use of an ethanol oxidation reaction (EOR)-active electrocatalyst with a much lower Pd content.

Graphic Abstract

ACS Electronic Supporting Info

      • Knowledge Management Model for the Downstream Oil Energy Sector in the Philippines: A Grounded Theory Approach

        Felipe C. Del Rosario III,Tomas S. Tiu KINFORMS 2023 Management Review Vol.18 No.2

Knowledge management can guide the management of an enterprise in running the business with a greater degree of efficiency while decreasing business risks. This dissertation presented a Knowledge Management model as a simplified image outlining the relationships of the devised theory using the grounded theory approach of qualitative research. Through semi-structured interviews done by carefully determining the current preferences of organizational leaders of four oil major companies operating in the downstream oil business in the Philippines, of the relevant knowledge processes backed up by presented documents, presentations, and policy manuals. The grounded theory inquiry developed a principle on modern Knowledge Management encompassing the specifics in the downstream oil sector in the Philippines. Theoretical saturation was achieved at ten participants. Thematic analysis generated patterns of modern knowledge. In the model, there were certain management prerequisites with several characteristics and for these characteristics to be effective, sources of knowledge were clearly identified. Once validated knowledge has been established and security of knowledge has been secured, utilization of the knowledge ensues. While using the knowledge, the model puts value on responsibility to work in collaboration with other knowledge managers. Collaboration means shared responsibility to ensure that the knowledge at hand will only be used in promoting common business goals. Predicaments like devaluation, mishandling, and manipulation of knowledge are always possible and extra caution should always be given. The model which can be replicated to other organizations with allied business structures will strengthen the resolve of a knowledge management system benefits by improving the business processes, making better decisions and short and long-term strategy formulation.

Personal Epistemologies and Motivation in Schools: The Relationship Between Students' Epistemological Beliefs and Intrinsic Motivation in Learning

        Rowena M. Del Rosario,Allan B. I. Bernardo Vol.31 No.1

In this study we investigated whether students' beliefs about knowledge and learning, or epistemological beliefs, can predict students' intrinsic motivation. We first examined the structure of Filipino students' epistemological beliefs, and then explored the relationship of these belief dimensions to intrinsic motivation. Participants were 200 high school students who completed Chan and Elliot's (2002) version of the Schommer's Epistemological Questionnaire. The result of an exploratory factor analysis revealed four dimensions: (a) fixed ability, (b) learning effort/process, (c) authority/expert knowledge, and (d) skepticism. The multiple regression analyses revealed that beliefs related to learning effort/process and skepticism predicted intrinsic motivation. The results are interpreted as suggesting that epistemological beliefs may be distal antecedents of intrinsic motivation, as they may be associated with cognitions and appraisals that are known to be proximal antecedents of intrinsic motivation.

An Analysis of the Religious History and Pluralism in the Philippines for Effective Korea Church Mission

Vol.47 No.-

Religious pluralism in the Philippines is oftentimes misconstrued as an oxymoron given the country’ predominant Catholic population --- the outcome of nearly 5 centuries of Spanish colonialism in which the motor of colonial administration was the Church and the Spanish friar. However, a historical view of religion in the Philippines yields two interesting patterns: 1) a globalization that preceded the nineteenth century, what Janet Abu-Lughod (1989) terms as a “world system that came into being” long before European hegemony, prompted a migration pattern characterized by the shift of maritime routes from the Persian Gulf to the Red Sea and occasioned an outflow of traders and Sufi missionaries originating from the Hadramawt region in the 13th century and brought Islam to Southeast Asia including the Philippines; 2) a current globalization that brought American Protestantism to the Philippines, as well as labor outflow from the Philippines to the Middle East, creating a new phenomenon of religious conversion known as Balik Islam (Return to Islam) among migrant Filipinos. Emphasis of this paper is on the religious history and pluralism in the Philippines for effective Korea Church mission.

Pequeños Negocios y Percepción Educativa: Evidencia de Microdatos en una Comunidad Marginada en Jalisco, México

Vol.28 No.3

This paper reports the results of a study on the perception of education returns among the residents of a poor urban neighborhood in Jalisco, Mexico. We found that household heads have a lower expectation of education returns when the household head is a small business owner, controlling for the parents’ education level and gender, income and household socio-demographic characteristics. Parents who own a small business report that they are more likely to let their children drop out school. This fact is important to be considered when microcredit policy is designed and implemented for the creation of small businesses.
