Carcass characteristics of lambs fed spineless cactus as a replacement for sugarcane

de Oliveira, Juliana Paula Felipe,Ferreira, Marcelo de Andrade,Alves, Adryanne Marjorie Souza Vitor,de Melo, Ana Caroline Cerqueira,de Andrade, Ida Barbosa,Urbano, Stela Antas,Suassuna, Juraci Marcos Asian Australasian Association of Animal Productio 2018 Animal Bioscience Vol.31 No.4

Objective: Fresh sugarcane has been a new roughage source for ruminant's in semiarid regions, a function of the decline of sugar and alcohol industry in recent years. However, there is little data published regarding lambs fed sugarcane associated with spineless cactus. This study evaluated the effect of sugarcane replacement with spineless cactus (0%, 33%, 66%, and 100%) in the diet of Santa $In\hat{e}s$ lambs on carcass characteristics. Methods: Thirty-six non-castrated Santa Ines lambs at four months of age and an initial body weight of $22{\pm}2.3kg$ were assigned in a randomized block design and slaughtered after 70 days of confinement. The effects of spineless cactus as a replacement for sugarcane in the diet of the lambs on the carcass characteristics, commercial cut weight and yield, leg tissue composition, and carcass measurements were studied. Results: The study revealed quadratic behavior in slaughter body weight, and hot and cold carcass weight, with maximum values of 38.60, 18.60, and 18.11 kg and replacement levels of 40.18%, 44.42%, and 43.14%, respectively. The cold carcass yield presented an increasing linear behavior. The compactness index of carcass and leg presented a quadratic effect, with estimated maximal values of 0.28 and 0.57 kg/cm and replacement levels of 43.37% and 45.5%, respectively. The weights of commercial cuts of leg, loin, shoulder, and breast showed quadratic behavior, with maximum values of 2.79, 0.852, 1.46, and 1.30 kg and replacement levels of 49.5, 45.32, 39.0, and 40.7, respectively. For tissue composition, quadratic behavior was verified for leg weight, subcutaneous fat, and total fat. Conclusion: The replacement of sugarcane by spineless cactus at level 44% is recommended for finishing lambs considering that this level improved most of the carcass characteristics, weights, and yields of commercial cuts and leg tissue composition.

Débora Lopes Silva de Souza,Hosana Mirelle Goes e Silva Costa,Francisca Idalina Neta,Paulo Leonardo Araujo de Gois Morais,Luís Marcos de Medeiros Guerra,Fausto Pierdoná Guzen,Lucídio Clebeson de Olive 대한정신약물학회 2023 CLINICAL PSYCHOPHARMACOLOGY AND NEUROSCIENCE Vol.21 No.4

Epilepsy is a disease characterized by the periodic occurrence of seizures. Seizures can be controlled by antiseizure medications, which can improve the lives of individuals with epilepsy when given proper treatment. Therefore, this study aimed to review the scientific literature on brain neuroplasticity after treatment with antiseizure drugs in different regions of the brain. According to the findings, that several antiseizure, such as lamotrigine, diazepam, levetiracetam, and valproic acid, in addition to controlling seizures, can also act on neuroplasticity in different brain regions. The study of this topic becomes important, as it will help to understand the neuroplastic mechanisms of these drugs, in addition to helping to improve the effectiveness of these drugs in controlling the disease.

Physical, chemical, mechanical, and micromorphological characterization of dental needles

de Oliveira Monteiro, Marco Antonio,Antunes, Alberto Nogueira da Gama,Basting, Roberta Tarkany The Korean Dental Society of Anesthsiology 2021 Journal of Dental Anesthesia and Pain Medicine Vol.21 No.2

Background: In anesthetic techniques, touching bones can cause needle bending. Theoretically, a needle should support such deflection without fracturing. However, it is possible that a needle may fracture depending on the quality and type of needle used. This study evaluated the physical, chemical, and micromorphological characteristics of long and short dental anesthetic needles, as well as the mechanical properties of flexural load and bending resistance when needles are subjected to different bending angles. Methods: Long and short needles (30G, Jets, Misawa, Selekto, Terumo, Unoject and 27G, Dencojet, Injex, Jets, Misawa, Procare, Setoject XL, Terumo) were evaluated. Scanning electron microscopy was used to evaluate the needle bevels and energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy was used for the chemical analysis of needle compositions. Flexural loading and bending strength assessments were performed using a universal testing machine by bending the needles (n = 5) to angles of 30°, 60°, or 90°, or until fracture occurred. Results: The Injex 27G, Jets 27G, and Septoject XL 27G needles were all less than 30 mm in length. There were small percentage variations in the chemical compositions of the needles. Superior smoothness was observed for the Unoject 30G needle, which exhibited the highest fracture resistance at 60°. The Jets 30G needle exhibited greater resistance to fractures at 90°. The Procare 27G needle exhibited the highest load resistance to bending, followed by the Septoject XL 27G needle, and both needles were tied for the lowest fracture resistance. No needle fractured when bent to 30° or at less than three bends to 60° or 90°. Conclusions: Greater needle resistance to bending increases the probability of early fracturing. Thinner and shorter needles are more resistant than longer and thicker needles. Performing a single bend does not result in any significant risk of fracture or obliterate the lumen, allowing for the continued passage of anesthetic liquid.

Development of a general strategy for the quantification of pseudopolymorphs: analysis of cefadroxil monohydrate in commercial products

de Marco Bianca A,Maggio Rubén M.,Nunes Salgado Hérida R. 한국약제학회 2020 Journal of Pharmaceutical Investigation Vol.50 No.4

Purpose The presence of different polymorphic or pseudo-polymorphic forms in active pharmaceutical ingredients may affect the performance of the formulated products. Pseudo-polymorphs, especially hydrates, present a differential dissolution rate. In such a scenario, pseudo-polymorphism should be strictly controlled due to its impact on the bio-availability of formulates products. Methods In order to determine solid forms of cefadroxil present in commercial capsules, anhydrous and monohydrate pure the solid forms were prepared and fully characterized by optical microscopy, vibrational spectroscopy (middle and near infrared), calorimetric techniques (differential scanning calorimetry and thermogravimetry). Nuclear magnetic resonance was used to corroborate structural integrity. Two sets of synthetic samples for calibration (N = 12) and validation (N = 12) were prepared following a binary-mixtures design of monohydrate/anhydrous cefadroxil in the presence of the excipient matrix. NIR spectra were acquired and used as input of partial least squares (PLS) model. Results Three PLS-factors, mean scattering correction and MIN–MAX normalization demonstrated to be the optimal parameters on full range spectra (750–2500 nm). The method was validated for linearity/range, accuracy and precision by evaluation of validation set recovery. Once method validated, a commercial lot of capsules was analyzed and acceptable recovery results and low deviations were obtained. Conclusion Near infrared spectroscopy (NIR) emerged as the technique of choice to determine pseudopolymorphic-purity. Cefadroxil monohydrate was determined in a fast and accurate way in presentence of cefadroxil anhydrous and excipients by NIR–PLS methodology. The developed analytical methodology, arise as a general strategy for hydrates determination, making a direct determination of pseudopolymorphic form.

      • Identification and Characterization of a Small-Molecule Inhibitor of Wnt Signaling in Glioblastoma Cells

        De Robertis, Alessandra,Valensin, Silvia,Rossi, Marco,Tunici, Patrizia,Verani, Margherita,De Rosa, Antonella,Giordano, Cinzia,Varrone, Maurizio,Nencini, Arianna,Pratelli, Carmela,Benicchi, Tiziana,Bak American Association for Cancer Research 2013 Molecular cancer therapeutics Vol.12 No.7

Glioblastoma multiforme (GBM) is the most common and prognostically unfavorable form of brain tumor. The aggressive and highly invasive phenotype of these tumors makes them among the most anatomically damaging human cancers with a median survival of less than 1 year. Although canonical Wnt pathway activation in cancers has been historically linked to the presence of mutations involving key components of the pathway (APC, β-catenin, or Axin proteins), an increasing number of studies suggest that elevated Wnt signaling in GBM is initiated by several alternative mechanisms that are involved in different steps of the disease. Therefore, inhibition of Wnt signaling may represent a therapeutically relevant approach for GBM treatment. After the selection of a GBM cell model responsive to Wnt inhibition, we set out to develop a screening approach for the identification of compounds capable of modulating canonical Wnt signaling and associated proliferative responses in GBM cells. Here, we show that the small molecule SEN461 inhibits the canonical Wnt signaling pathway in GBM cells, with relevant effects at both molecular and phenotypic levels in vitro and in vivo. These include SEN461-induced Axin stabilization, increased β-catenin phosphorylation/degradation, and inhibition of anchorage-independent growth of human GBM cell lines and patient-derived primary tumor cells in vitro. Moreover, in vivo administration of SEN461 antagonized Wnt signaling in Xenopus embryos and reduced tumor growth in a GBM xenograft model. These data represent the first demonstration that small-molecule–mediated inhibition of Wnt signaling may be a potential approach for GBM therapeutics. Mol Cancer Ther; 12(7); 1180–9. ©2013 AACR.

      • Multi-Purpose Mobile Artefacts

Marco de Sa,Luis Carrico,Luis Duarte,Tiago Reis 보안공학연구지원센터 2008 International Journal of Smart Home Vol.2 No.4

Paper-based artefacts (e.g., forms, manuals, questionnaires) are used ubiquitously and pervasively to support a wide set of activities. Education and Health Care are major examples of such endeavour. However, given the passiveness of the medium itself, several problems (e.g., communication, adjustment, lack of interactivity) are usually encountered within these activities which hinder human efficiency or prevent users from achieving desired goals. This paper presents a framework that provides common users with tools to create interactive and adjustable digital artefacts for mobile devices. The artefacts can be adjusted to the users’ needs, introducing different configurations regarding their look, interaction and behaviour, providing support to various purposes by coping with and enhancing different procedures. The framework has been validated through two case studies by providing support to mobile learning, and within psychotherapy, by offering means to achieve ubiquitous cognitive behavioural therapy.

Mandibular Advancement Device for Severe Obstructive Sleep Apnea: A Case Report Indicating a Way to Personalize Treatment

Marco De Pieri,Mauro Manconi,Silvia Miano 대한수면연구학회 2022 Journal of sleep medicine Vol.19 No.2

The mandibular advancement device (MAD) is a therapeutic option for obstructive sleep apnea syndrome (OSAS); however, for severe cases, it has a lower efficacy compared to continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP). This report aimed to present the efficacy of MAD in a patient with severe OSAS who refused CPAP. Video-polysomnography and polygraphy were performed before and after treatment, respectively. Three months after fitting and titrating the MAD, the apnea–hypopnea index was reduced from 56.2 events/h to 1.3 events/h and the minimum oxyhemoglobin saturation increased from 80% to 91%. Snoring time reduced from 75.2% to 0.2%. Our patient presented with low body fat, retrognathia, pharyngeal obstruction mainly along the anteroposterior axis and at the base of the tongue, and the ability to make wide protrusive movements with the jaw. In our opinion, these features could constitute a phenotype that may predict a positive response to MAD treatment even in severe cases of OSAS.

María de la Luz Galván-Ramírez,Ana Luisa Madriz-Elisondo,Jorge de Jesús Romero Rameño,Dania Araceli de la O Carrasco,Marco Antonio Cardona López,Cynthia Guadalupe Temores Ramírez 질병관리본부 2019 Osong Public Health and Research Persptectives Vol.10 No.1

Objectives: To determine the prevalence and risk factors associated with intestinal parasites in the population of San Juan Cosala, Jalisco, Mexico. Methods: A total of 277 samples from 104 participants were analysed using direct smear, flotation, formaldehyde/ethyl acetate, and modified Kinyoun’s acid-fast stain methods. The Graham method was applied only for samples from children under 12 years of age for the diagnosis of Enterobius vermicularis. Results: The prevalence of parasite infections in the study population was 77.9% including: Entamoeba histolytica/E. dispar/E. moshkovskii/E. bangladeshi (37.5%), Giardia intestinalis (11.5%); commensals: Endolimax nana (44.2%), Entamoeba coli (27.9%), Chilomastix mesnili (6.7%) and Iodamoeba bütschlii, (2.9%); emerging intestinal protozoans: Blastocystis spp. (49%), Cryptosporidium spp. (7.7%) and Cyclospora cayetanensis (2.9%); and helminths: Enterobius vermicularis (18.3%) and Ascaris lumbricoides (5.8%). The results also showed that 58.64% of the studied population presented polyparasitism. A significant association was found between protozoan infections and housewives, and houses that were not built with concrete ceilings, brick walls and cement floors (p < 0.05). Conclusion: Polyparasitism was observed in over half the study population. The most prevalent parasite was Blastocystis spp, whilst the prevalence of helminths was less than that of protozoans. The risk factors for infection to intestinal parasites were being a housewife and not having solid brick, cement and concrete materials for house construction.
