Previous research has established the existence of individual differences with regards to individuals' optimum time of well-functioning; specifically in terms of being either morning or evening oriented. An association has also emerged between being more evening, as opposed to morning, oriented and having a greater number of sexual partners. The aim of the present study was to investigate whether "eveningness" in males is an evolved sexually dimorphic trait consistent across different cultures. A sample of 179 male Sri Lankan men residing in two different cultural and economic settings, Italy and Sri Lanka, were administered the Morningness-Eveningness Questionnaire (MEQ) followed by assessing their sexual behavior history. The results robustly portrayed a highly significant main effect of MEQ types highlighting the twofold sexual success enjoyed by the evening individuals in both regional locations. Morning oriented individuals, showed a stronger preference for going out and partying than evening-types, suggesting that the higher mating success of evening types is not due to their different lifestyles allowing more opportunities to encounter females. However, evening types exhibited a preference for flirtatious behaviors in the later part of the day. Shoulder-to-hip and handgrip strength, as measures of testosterone levels, were not significantly associated with eveningness. The results are discussed in terms of sexual selection and its interplay with human cultural variation.
SIMULATION OF A LOW TEMPERATURE EVAPORATOR IN A CASCADE REFRIGERATION SYSTEM
DUSHYANTHA GUNAWARDANE,PRADEEP BANSAL 대한설비공학회 2011 International Journal Of Air-Conditioning and Refr Vol.19 No.3
This paper presents a mathematical model for the evaporator of a cascade refrigeration system, operating down to -40°C. The system uses Carbon dioxide (R744) and Propylene (R1270), respectively, as the low temperature and high temperature cycle refrigerant. The model is developed in Engineering Equation Solver software package following the elemental Number of Transfer Units-effectiveness method, where frost has not been considered. The evaporator is a cross-flow finned tube serpentine heat exchanger, which was divided into numerous elements along the flow path of the refrigerant. The inputs to the model include inlet temperatures and mass flow rates of both the streams along with the heat flux, while the main outputs are the outlet temperatures, refrigeration capacity and HX effectiveness. The model is found to underpredict the refrigeration capacity by about 10% when compared with experimental data.
Primary energy conversion performance of “Pendulor” wave energy device with bottom gap

“Pendulor,” a wave energy device, is the first notable oscillating wave surge converter (OWSC), which consists of a top hinged flap that oscillates in a bounded caisson. From the sea tests conducted by the Muroran Institute of Technology, Japan, it is proven to present 40%–50% energy conversion efficiency. Nevertheless, there are unresolved issues, particularly regarding the phys-ical configurations of the caisson and the flap combination when adopting the OWSC under different sea conditions. The main objec-tive of this research is to investigate the effect of the parametric interactions of caisson configurations on the conversion efficiency. This paper describes the test facility arrangements and the obtained model test results, particularly for the primary energy conversion efficiency of the device for selected configurations. Three-dimensional model tests were conducted in a wave tank to investigate the behavior of a straight caisson configuration using a 1/40th scale following the Froudian scaling for regular waves. Tests were con-ducted for the conventional caisson arrangement (flap without a gap in the caisson) and for a flap with a bottom gap. The results ob-tained for the power extraction for different combinations of the damping torque and the wave frequencies were analyzed to compare the power capture for the above caisson configurations. The discovery of the “pumping mode,” which enhances the power capture, is discussed and was verified in this study.
