      • The Growth of Korean Companies and Their Contributions to the Miracle of the Han River

        Over the past six decades, the Korean economy has witnessed remarkable growth. In the 1950s, when the government was first established, Korea was the one of the poorest countries in the world. Now, it has grown as a global economic power with a solid industrial base. Korea’s economic success since then has been named “the Miracle of the Han River”. Along with the growth of the economy, there is an enormous contribution from Korean companies which probably started from small shops and have grown to become global giants. There are some studies about the Korean economy and Korean companies, especially Chaebols. These studies mainly focus on the relationship between value and ownership structure, and the gap between controlling power and cash flow ownership. However, there is a controversy over how the companies have contributed to the success of the Korean economy. These critical issues have attracted the attention of not only academic scholars but also policy makers. This study aims to present the outstanding post-war development of the Korean economy with a particular concentrate on the role played by Korean companies. First, the growth of Korea economy is reviewed. Second, we cover the growth of Korean firms, which have contributed remarkably to the national economic development. Third, we provide an overview of government policy and the external environment facing Korean firms, and discuss about the intervention of government in business activities that lead to industrialization. Fourth, we show how Korean businessmen have carried out business activities in conjunction with the government-directed economic policies. Findings from this study highlight many implications for the developing countries and their business sector.

        Ultrafine Copper Nanoparticles Exhibiting a Powerful Antifungal/Killing Activity Against Corticium Salmonicolor

        In this paper ultrafine copper nanoparticles (CuNPs) were prepared from copper salt via chemical reduction method with sodium citrate dispersant and polyvinylalcol (PVA) capping polymer. The colloidal CuNPs were characterized by using UV-Visible spectroscopy, Transmission Electron Microscopy (TEM), and X-ray Diffraction (XRD) techniques. Our obtained results indicated that the CuNPs were produced ranging from 2 to 4 nm in diameter. The colloidal solution at 7 ppm of CuNPs exhibited a powerful antifungal activity against Corticium salmonicolor (C. Salmonicolor). Fungal killing assays showed colloid solutions containing 10 ppm of CuNPs killed entirely the cultured fungus. A highly killing activity against the fungus was also performed when the CuNPs were sprayed on pink disease-infected rubber trees. These positive results may offer a great potential to produce CuNPs-based eco-fungicide for pink disease.

        Enzyme-mediated fabrication of an oxidized chitosan hydrogel as a tissue sealant

        <P>Oxidized polysaccharide-based hydrogels have recently attracted much attention for tissue regeneration because of their biocompatibility and tissue-adhesive property. In this study, we introduce a new type of chitosan-based hydrogel as a tissue sealant, which was prepared by enzymatic mediation from periodate-oxidized chitosan–polyethylene glycol–tyramine. The oxidized chitosan backbone was expected to enhance the interconnection between the hydrogel layer and collagen in the tissues via the Schiff-base reaction. Proton nuclear magnetic resonance spectra indicated that tyramine-functionalized polyethylene glycol-nitrophenyl carbonate ester was conjugated to the oxidized chitosan. The degree of oxidation of the chitosan backbone was around 14% of the glucosamine units by proton nuclear magnetic resonance. The hydrogel was rapidly formed in situ (within a few seconds) in the presence of horseradish peroxidase and hydrogen peroxide. In vitro experiments with live/dead cell assays showed that the oxidized chitosan-based hydrogel was cytobiocompatible. The hydrogel exhibited high tissue adhesion strength on porcine skin models as well as good tissue-adhesive ability and wound healing properties on rabbit skin. These positive results could be promising for the application of oxidized chitosan-based hydrogels as a wound sealant.</P>

        Preparation of Silver Core-Chitosan Shell Nanoparticles Using Catechol-Functionalized Chitosan and Antibacterial Studies

        In this paper, we report the preparation and stabilization of colloidal silver nanoparticle solution, with theassistance of chitosan dihydroxyphenyl acetamide (CDHPA), or oligochitosan dihydroxyphenyl acetamide (OCDHPA). The structure of the chitosan derivatives were characterized by nuclear magnetic resonance (1H NMR) spectroscopy. The morphology of the synthesized silver core-chitosan shell nanoparticles were observed by transmission electronmicroscopy (TEM) and X-ray diffraction (XRD) techniques, and showed a well-defined core-shell structure of polymer-coated silver nanoparticles (AgNPs). The core-shell NPs exhibited a strong antibacterial activity against E. coliand S. aureus, at a very low concentration of AgNPs (2.5 ppm). Our studies offer a new method for the preparationand protection of silver nanoparticles for antibacterial applications.

        A comparison of 6 osteoporosis risk assessment tools among postmenopausal women in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia

        Objectives: To compare and assess the performance of 6 osteoporosis risk assessment tools for screening osteoporosis in Malaysian postmenopausal women. Methods: Six osteoporosis risk assessments tools (the Simple Calculated Osteoporosis Risk Estimation [SCORE], the Osteoporosis Risk Assessment Instrument, the Age Bulk One or Never Estrogen, the body weight, the Malaysian Osteoporosis Screening Tool, and the Osteoporosis Self-Assessment Tool for Asians) were used to screen postmenopausal women who had not been previously diagnosed with osteoporosis/osteopenia. These women also underwent a dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (DXA) scan to confirm the absence or presence of osteoporosis. Results: A total of 164/224 participants were recruited (response rate, 73.2%), of which only 150/164 (91.5%) completed their DXA scan. Sixteen participants (10.7%) were found to have osteoporosis, whilst 65/150 (43.3%) were found to have osteopenia. Using precision-recall curves, the recall of the tools ranged from 0.50 to 1.00, whilst precision ranged from 0.04 to 0.14. The area under the curve (AUC) ranged from 0.027 to 0.161. The SCORE had the best balance between recall (1.00), precision (0.04e0.12), and AUC (0.072e0.161). Conclusions: We found that the SCORE had the best balance between recall, precision, and AUC among the 6 screening tools that were compared among Malaysian postmenopausal women.
