Limit analysis of plates-a finite element formulation
Capsoni, Antonio,Corradi, Leone Techno-Press 1999 Structural Engineering and Mechanics, An Int'l Jou Vol.8 No.4
A procedure for the computation of the load carrying capacity of perfectly plastic plates in bending is presented. The approach, based on the kinematic theorem of limit analysis, requires the evaluation of the minimum of a convex, but non-smooth, function under linear equality constraints. A systematic solution procedure is devised, which detects and eliminates the finite elements which are predicted as rigid in the collapse mechanism, thus reducing the problem to the search for the minimum of a smooth and essentially unconstrained function of nodal velocities. Both Kirchhoff and Mindlin plate models are considered. The effectiveness of the approach is illustrated by means of some examples.
iPOJO-based Middleware Solutions for Self-Reconfiguration and Self-Optimization

In recent years, ubiquitous and pervasive scenarios have emerged as a complex ecosystem where differentiated software/hardware components interoperate wirelessly and seamlessly. The goal is to enable users to continuously access services and contents, and to always get the best out of their current environment and available resources. In such dynamic and flexible scenarios, the need emerges for flexible and general solutions for continuous runtime self-reconfiguration and self-optimization of ubiquitous support software systems. This paper proposes a fully reconfigurable middleware approach that aims at reconfiguring complex software systems made up of heterogeneous off-the-shelf components from both functional and non-functional perspectives. Our middleware can also extend already existing and non-reconfigurable middleware/applications in an easy and flexible way, with no need to re-design them. The proposed design principles have been practically applied to the implementation of a runtime self-reconfigurable middleware called Off-The-Shelf Ready To Go (OTS-RTG), implemented on top of iPOJO. The reported experimental results both exhibit a limited overhead and show the wide applicability of the proposed solution to many application scenarios, including complex, industrial, Enterprise Service Bus-based ones.

Multimedia provisioning over Wi-Fi networks is a complex task that should consider also novel issues stemming from the specific behavior of IEEE 802.11 protocols. In particular, we claim the need for visibility of context data about the IEEE 802.11 performance anomaly, i.e., the situation where even a single node located at the borders of the coverage area of a Wi-Fi access point produces a relevant degradation in the connectivity quality of all other nodes in the area. The paper proposes a novel application-level middleware that counteracts IEEE 802.11 anomaly without imposing any modification in standard Wi-Fi protocols, thus permitting to maintain the current wide base of installed equipment. Our middleware portably detects anomaly situations via decentralized standard mechanisms available at clients; anomaly awareness is used to promptly react with application-level management operations (flow quality downscaling and traffic shaping) that both preserve the goodput at nodes in well-covered areas and minimize quality degradations at clients generating the anomaly. The reported experimental results point out the feasibility of application-level middleware approaches also in the challenging multimedia area.

This paper endeavours to emphasise one particular vector ofsustainable development from intangible cultural heritage:‘frugal innovations’. It discusses the potential of ICH to generatefrugal innovations, contributing to improving communities’quality of life and enhancing the safeguarding of intangiblecultural heritage. A type of innovation constrained by limitedresources, frugal innovation means the development ofprocesses, products or services reduced to core functionalitieswith optimised performance levels, addressing the needs of thebottom of the pyramid market. When implemented at communitylevel, it aims to create a novel solution from the scarce resourcesavailable to respond to the needs of the communities concerned. This paper presents two case studies - the Indian Mitticool, andthe Australian WALFA project - to illustrate the transformation ofspecific traditional knowledge into frugal innovations, and theirimpact on their respective communities. The analysis will buildon the conceptual framework proposed by Soni and Krishnan(2014) that defines the dimensions of frugal innovation in termsof mindset, process and product. This paper then analysesthe institutional framework provided by the 2003 Convention, especially its Chapter VI on ‘Sustainable Development’, tolegitimise and leverage ICH-related frugal innovations, as wellas to ensure that this transformation is fair and collectivelybeneficial.

Cold-Formed Steel (CFS) sections are vulnerable to certain local and global failures, especially web crippling failures. CFS beams are generally employed in construction practices mainly as floor joists or bearers. The design standards, AISI S100, AS/NZS 4600 and Eurocode 3 Part 1–3 predict the web crippling capacity of CFS sections according to the experimental studies conducted in previous years. In most of the cases, the predictions of the equations were unsafe and hence innovative concepts of CFS should be examined undergoing web crippling. Therefore, the web crippling behaviour of the unlipped channel sections with high-strength material under Interior-Two-Flange (ITF) loading condition was investigated in this study by following the AISI S909 standard test method defined for web crippling. Numerical simulations using Finite Element Analysis (FEA) software (ABAQUS) were conducted on 243 parametric studies to replicate the loading conditions of ITF following a proper validation. Parametric study data were then taken into account to determine the accuracy of existing equations for web crippling capacity in the design standards and existing literature. Since the available design equations were conservative or unsafe and considering the empirical nature of CFS sections in terms of web crippling capacity, new modified equations were proposed to predict the ultimate web crippling capacity of high-strength unlipped channel sections and a new design approach based on the Direct Strength Method (DSM) was also developed.
