The United Arab Emirates (UAE) has experienced tremendous economic and industrial growth in the petroleum, airline, maritime and construction sectors, especially since the discovery of oil reserves. Mass recruitment of low skilled or unskilled laborers from less-developed countries has been utilized to satisfy the manpower demands of these fast paced industrial developments. Such workforce recruitment has created an unusual populace demographic, with the total UAE population estimated at 8.3 million, composed of 950,000 Emiratis, with the remainder being multinational expatriate workers, with varying educational qualifications, work experience, religious beliefs, cultural practices, and native languages. These unique characteristics pose a challenge for health and safety professionals tasked with ensuring the UAE workforce adheres to specific occupational health and safety procedures. The paper discusses two case studies that employ a novel multimedia approach to raising health and safety awareness among a multinational workforce.
Sustainability of Capture Fisheries and SDG 14 : Life Below Water
JOEL ATKINSON,LUISA COOLS Institute for International Trade and Cooperation, 2017 Asian International Studies Review Vol.18 No.1
Unlike the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs), the new United Nations (UN) post-2015 Global Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) include a goal related to conserving and sustainably using the oceans, seas and marine resources— Sustainable Development Goal 14: “Life Below Water” (SDG 14). Inter alia, the goal aims to increase the sustainability of capture fisheries. For the most part, the sub-goals and targets emerging from this process are not new. Still, for the first time, fisheries have moved toward the center of the sustainable development discourse and the high profile of the SDGs may contribute to increased accountability. However, unless rhetoric translates into the political will to set measurable targets and enforce them, the goal alone cannot generate sustainability in capture fisheries.
TWENTIETH CENTURY ALLIED INTEROPERABILITY
Hixson, John A,Cooling,Benjamin Franklin The Institute for Far Eastern Studies Kyungnam Uni 1982 ASIAN PERSPECTIVE Vol.6 No.1
Any historian may beat begin a lecture by quoting seers more familiar with a topic than himself. Surely practioneers have the edge on chroniclers; participants on academicians in this regard. In the case of the subject at hand, the former habe paid scant attention to so-called "lessons" discerned by the latter. The latter have been notably remiss in covering those lessons from a full spectrum of perspective. "Allied Interoperability" has proven a case in point for historians at the US Army Military History Institute over the past three years.
