      • Factors Associated with Cervical Cancer Screening Amongst Women of Reproductive Age from Yucatan, Mexico

Conde-Ferraez, Laura,Allen, Rosa Etelvina Suarez,Martinez, Jorge Ramiro Carrillo,Ayora-Talavera, Guadalupe,Gonzalez-Losa, Maria del Refugio Asian Pacific Journal of Cancer Prevention 2012 Asian Pacific journal of cancer prevention Vol.13 No.9

This study aimed to analyse the participation of women of reproductive age in a cancer screening program, and survey reasons for non-screening in a region from Mexico with high cervical cancer mortality. A total of 281 obstetric patients from a previous HPV study in a social security hospital during 2008-2009 were included. Reasons for not participating in the screening were directly asked. HPV positive patients were invited to participate in an informative workshop, and they filled in a knowledge questionnaire. The women ranged in age from 14-47 years; 123 (43.8%) had never participated in screening, of which 97 (78.9%) had their first sexual intercourse 2 to 10 years ago, resulting in 25% HPV positive. Screening history was strongly associated with 2 or more gestations (OR=10.07, p=0.00) and older age (OR=6.69 p=0.00). When 197 women were contacted and interviewed, reasons referred for non-screening were ignorance, lack of interest or time, recent sexual onset, shame and fear. More than 50% of the workshop participants showed knowledge of HPV, while 38.9% and 25% knew about Pap smear and cervical cancer. A high percentage of women of reproductive age have never had a Pap smear. Promoting the screening program in medical facilities seems to be important in this population. New approaches to inform vulnerable individuals on the benefits of screening need to be implemented, especially for young women.

      • DC-SIGN+ Macrophages Control the Induction of Transplantation Tolerance

        Conde, P.,Rodriguez, M.,van der Touw, W.,Jimenez, A.,Burns, M.,Miller, J.,Brahmachary, M.,Chen, H.m.,Boros, P.,Rausell-Palamos, F.,Yun, T.,Riquelme, P.,Rastrojo, A.,Aguado, B.,Stein-Streilein, J.,Tana Cell Press 2015 Immunity Vol.42 No.6

<P>Tissue effector cells of the monocyte lineage can differentiate into different cell types with specific cell function depending on their environment. The phenotype, developmental requirements, and functional mechanisms of immune protective macrophages that mediate the induction of transplantation tolerance remain elusive. Here, we demonstrate that costimulatory blockade favored accumulation of DC-SIGN-expressing macrophages that inhibited CD8(+) T cell immunity and promoted CD4(+)Foxp3(+) Treg cell expansion in numbers. Mechanistically, that simultaneous DC-SIGN engagement by fucosylated ligands and TLR4 signaling was required for production of immunoregulatory IL-10 associated with prolonged allograft survival. Deletion of DC-SIGN-expressing macrophages in vivo, interfering with their CSF1-dependent development, or preventing the DC-SIGN signaling pathway abrogated tolerance. Together, the results provide new insights into the tolerogenic effects of costimulatory blockade and identify DC-SIGN(+) suppressive macrophages as crucial mediators of immunological tolerance with the concomitant therapeutic implications in the clinic.</P>

Scaling the chord and Hellinger distances in the range [0,1]: An option to consider

        Anxo Conde,Jorge Domínguez 국립중앙과학관 2018 Journal of Asia-Pacific Biodiversity Vol.11 No.1

The chord and Hellinger distances are commonly used as measures of resemblance in ecological studies. Both distances are bound within the range [0,√2]. We propose to scale them within the range [0,1]. The scaling is mainly justified to report beta diversity values in the range [0,1] properly. Moreover, results for both unscaled distances in multivariate techniques such as cluster analysis or ordinations are not directly comparable with similar graphical displays obtained with indices bound in the range [0,1]. Although comparability and/or interpretability of values are compromised, the used of the unscaled Hellinger and chord distances do not void their validity in ecological studies. Nonetheless, we have found one exception when comparing clustering models using the Gower distance criterion.

The phenomenology of pain in Parkinson’s disease

José Antonio Camacho-Conde,Víctor Manuel Campos-Arillo 대한통증학회 2020 The Korean Journal of Pain Vol.33 No.1

Background: Parkinson’s disease (PD) is a neurodegenerative disorder that is the second most common disorder after Alzheimer’s disease. PD includes both “motor” and “non-motor” symptoms, one of which is pain. The aim of this study was to investigate the clinical characteristics of pain in patients with PD. Methods: This cross-sectional study included 250 patients diagnosed with PD, 70% of which had mild to moderate PD (stages 2/3 of Hoehn and Yahr scale). The average age was 67.4 years, and the average duration since PD diagnosis was 7.1 years. Relevant data collected from PD patients were obtained from their personal medical history. Results: The prevalence of pain was found to be high (82%), with most patients (79.2%) relating their pain to PD. Disease duration was correlated with the frequency of intense pain (R: 0.393; P < 0.05). PD pain is most frequently perceived as an electrical current (64%), and two pain varieties were most prevalent (2.60 ± 0.63). Our findings confirm links between pain, its evolution over time, its multi-modal character, the wide variety of symptoms of PD, and the female sex. Conclusions: Our results demonstrated that the pain felt by PD patients is mainly felt as an electrical current, which contrasts with other studies where the pain is described as burning and itching. Our classification is innovative because it is based on anatomy, whereas those of other authors were based on syndromes.

Alteration of chromophoric dissolved organic matter by solar UV radiation causes rapid changes in bacterial community composition

        Piccini, Claudia,Conde, Daniel,Pernthaler, Jakob,Sommaruga, Ruben Korean Society of Photoscience 2009 Photochemical & photobiological sciences Vol.8 No.9

We evaluated the effect of photochemical alterations of chromophoric dissolved organic matter (CDOM) on bacterial abundance, activity and community composition in a coastal lagoon of the Atlantic Ocean with high dissolved organic carbon concentration. On two occasions during the austral summer, bacteria-free water of the lagoon was exposed to different regions of the solar spectrum (full solar radiation, UV-A + PAR, PAR) or kept in the dark. Subsequently, dilution cultures were established with bacterioplankton from the lagoon that were incubated in the pre-exposed water for 5 h in the dark. Cell abundance, activity, and community composition of bacterioplankton were assessed before and after incubation in the different treatments. Changes in absorption, fluorescence, and DOC concentration were used as proxies for CDOM photoalteration. We found a significant CDOM photobleaching signal, DOC loss, as well as a stimulation of bacterial activity in the treatments pre-exposed to UV radiation, suggesting increased bioavailability of DOM. Bacterial community analysis by fluorescence in situ hybridization revealed that this stimulation was mainly accompanied by the specific enrichment of Alpha- and Betaproteobacteria. Thus, our results suggest that CDOM photoalteration not only stimulates bacterioplankton growth, but also induces rapid changes in bacterioplankton composition, which can be of relevance for ecosystem functioning, particularly considering present and future changes in the input of terrestrial CDOM to aquatic systems.

RESULTS OF THERMAL CREEP TEST ON HIGHLY IRRADIATED ZIRLO

        Quecedo, M.,Lloret, M.,Conde, J.M.,Alejano, C.,Gago, J.A.,Fernandez, F.J. Korean Nuclear Society 2009 Nuclear Engineering and Technology Vol.41 No.2

This paper presents a thermal creep test under internal pressure and post-test characterization performed on high burnup (68 MWd/kgU) ZIRLO. This research has been done by the CSN, ENRESA, and ENUSA in order to investigate the behavior of advanced cladding materials in contemporary PWRs at higher burnup under dry cask storage conditions. Also, to investigate the hydride reorientation, the cool-down of the samples after the test has been done in a coordinated manner with the internal pressure. The creep results obtained are consistent with the expected behavior from reference CWSR material, Zr-4. During the test, the material retained significant ductility: one specimen leaked during the test at an engineering strain of the tube section of 17%; remarkably, the crack closed due to de-pressurization. Although significant hydride reorientation occurred during the cool-down under pressure, no specimen failed during the cool-down.

Numerical calculation of the wind action on buildings using Eurocode 1 atmospheric boundary layer velocity profiles

M.F.P. Lopes,J.M. Paixao Conde,M. Gloria Gomes,J.G. Ferreira 한국풍공학회 2010 Wind and Structures, An International Journal (WAS Vol.13 No.6

When designing structures to the wind action, the variation of the mean wind velocity and turbulence parameters with the height above the ground must be taken into account. This paper presents the numerical simulation results of atmospheric boundary layer (ABL) airflows, in a numerical domain with no obstacles and with a cubic building. The results of the flow characterization, obtained with the FLUENT CFD code were performed using the k . ε turbulence model with the MMK modification. The mean velocity and turbulence intensity profiles in the inflow boundary were defined in accordance with the Eurocode 1.4, for different conditions of aerodynamic roughness. The maintenance of the velocity and turbulence characteristics along the domain were evaluated in an empty domain for uniform incident flow and the ABL Eurocode velocity profiles. The pressure coefficients on a cubic building were calculated using these inflow conditions.
