Corrosive Esophagitis with Benzalkonium Chloride in a Two Days Old Neonate

Civan, Hasret Ayyildiz,Gulcu, Didem,Erkan, Tulay The Korean Society of Pediatric Gastroenterology 2016 Pediatric gastroenterology, hepatology & nutrition Vol.19 No.3

Benzalkonium chloride (BAC) is a caustic agent which is used in farms, homes and hospitals for cleaning skin and wounds as an antiseptic solution. It may lead to digestive system injuries in case of ingestion. We present a two-days-old newborn case which was carried to the emergency unit with complaints of poor breastfeeding, uneasiness and crying for 4-6 hours. Her mom confessed that she had given a spoon of 10% BAC solution for her cough. Initial laboratory tests were in normal ranges. A gastroscopy performed in the second hour of her admission revealed an hyperemic and edematous mucosa in the middle third of esophagus and a circumferential ulceration followed in the distal portion. Hereupon, a conservative treatment for 10 days was administered and the control gastroscopy demonstrated that the damage was almost totally improved. She was the youngest case with this etiology and successfully treated with conservative approach.

Do Anxiety and Depression Levels Affect the Inflammation Response in Patients Hospitalized for COVID-19

        Aybeniz Civan Kahve,Hasan Kaya,Merve Okuyucu,Erol Goka,Sureyya Barun,Yunus Hacimusalar 대한신경정신의학회 2021 PSYCHIATRY INVESTIGATION Vol.18 No.6

Objective The whole world is still struggling with the COVID-19 pandemic. Inflammation response, thought to be associated with severe illness and death, is an important research topic in COVID-19. Inflammation is also an essential condition explored in psychiatric illnesses. Our knowledge about the relationship between the inflammation response and psychiatric comorbidities in patients with COVID-19 is very limited. In this study, the relationship between anxiety and depression levels and inflammation response of patients with COVID-19 hospitalized in the hospital was examined. Methods 175 patients were included in the study. Sociodemographic Data Form, Beck Depression Inventory and Beck Anxiety Inventory were applied to the patients. To evaluate the inflammation responses, blood sedimentation rate, C-reactive protein (CRP), procalcitonin, ferritin, neutrophil/lymphocyte ratio (NLR), and IL-6 levels were examined. Results In our study, no relationship was found between anxiety and depression levels and inflammatory responses in patients hospitalized with a diagnosis of COVID-19. Anxiety and depression levels of women were higher than men, and NLR, ferritin, IL-6 levels were found to be lower than men. Anxiety levels increase with age. There is a positive correlation between NLR and ferritin levels and duration of hospitalization. Conclusion Our study examining the relationship of psychiatric comorbidities with the inflammation response and our increasing literature knowledge, together with studies evaluating the mental effects of COVID-19, suggest that determining the relationship between inflammation responses and psychiatric comorbidities in COVID-19, whose pathophysiology has not been clarified yet, maybe an essential step in interventions on the course of the disease.

Cellulose Monoacetate/Tetraethyl Orthosilicate Hybrid Nanofibers for Electrochemical DNA Biosensors

        Sinem Civan,Seval Aydin,Nilay Aladag Tanik,Yakup Aykut 한국섬유공학회 2021 Fibers and polymers Vol.22 No.4

Cellulose monoacetate/tetraethyl orthosilicate (CMA/TEOS) hybrid nanofibers were produced with differentratios via electrospinning and used for guanine oxidation analysis in the single strand deoxyribonucleic acid (ssDNA)molecules by electrochemical method. Nanofiber (NF) diameters for pure CMA dramatically decreased from between 2.4 μ-306 nm to between 958-42 nm with addition of hydrochloric acid (HCl) catalyzer into the electrospinning solution. UniformCMA nanofibers morphologies transform to more defect structures containing particular structures with the addition andincrease of TEOS content in CMA electrospinning solution. Also, nanofibers' diameters range became more fluctuated formand ultrafine nanofibers (diameters below 100 nm) existed more in the nanofiber mat. Even though the melting point wasseen at CMA nanofibers, melting points were not detectable in CMA/TEOS NFs since TEOS addition does not allow anappropriate crystallization. Thermal analysis results revealed that residual contents after TGA measurement in nitrogenatmosphere were gradually increased by increasing TEOS ratio in CMA/TEOS nanofibers. ssDNA molecules were immobilizedon the as-spun nanofibers and differential pulse voltammetry (DPV) measurements were carried out to investigate theguanine oxidation in ssDNA. Guanine oxidation signal intensities decreased with the initial addition of TEOS to CMAnanofibers and increases again by increasing TEOS content in CMA/TEOS hybrid nanofibers and then gradually decreasesagain with increasing TEOS content. The prepared CMA/TEOS hybrid nanofibers could be a promising candidate as anelectrode interface for genetic molecule detection via electrochemical methods.

Preparation of magnetic activated carbon-chitosan nanocomposite for crystal violet adsorption

        Ferda Civan Çavuşoğlu,Seher Akan,Ezgi Aleyna Arı,Ezgi Çetinkaya,Elif Çolak,Gamze Nur Daştan,Semina Deniz,Damla Erdem,Melda Köksal,Sevgi Korkmaz,Nursena Onsekiz,Betül Oruçoğlu,Didem Özkaya,Hamdi Buğra 한국화학공학회 2019 Korean Journal of Chemical Engineering Vol.36 No.11

Magnetic, cheap and versatile adsorbents were developed for crystal violet (CV) adsorption in this study. These adsorbents are magnetic activated carbon (AC-Fe3O4) and chitosan grafted magnetic activated carbon (Chitosan- AC-Fe3O4). Fe3O4 and chitosan were also used for adsorption. X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), vibrating sample magnetometer (VSM), zeta potential analysis and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) methods were used for characterization of adsorbents. Adsorption parameters for CV were investigated. Raw chitosan and Fe3O4 were also used for CV adsorption to compare the results of composites. The chosen adsorption parameters are amount of adsorbent, contact time, initial CV concentration, and temperature. The equilibrium period was observed to be very short for chitosan and Fe3O4 nanoparticles. The adsorption efficiencies of these adsorbents are very low. AC-Fe3O4 and AC-Fe3O4-Chitosan nanoparticles reached equilibrium at 80min. The all adsorbent-CV systems followed pseudo second-order kinetic model. AC-Fe3O4 and AC-Fe3O4-Chitosan composites suited non-linear Freundlich isotherm for all temperatures (298, 308 and 318 K). Regeneration of adsorbents was also investigated. 1M of acetic acid and 0.1M of NaOH solutions were tested. Acetic acid solution desorbed CV better than NaOH solution at 6 hours.

Effect of Gd Substitution on the Structural, Magnetic, and Magnetocaloric Properties of Fe68Tb₅B23Nb₄ Metallic Glass

        Ersin Civan,Kagan Sarlar,Ilker Kucuk 한국자기학회 2019 Journal of Magnetics Vol.24 No.1

The effects of adding Gd on the Curie temperature (TC), glass-forming ability (GFA), and magnetocaloric effect (MCE) were studied in Fe68-xGdxTb₅B23Nb₄ (x = 0, 2, and 6) glassy alloys prepared by suction casting. It was shown that when Gd content was exchanged with Fe partially for x = 2, GFA was increased, whereas for x = 6, adding Gd content has reduced the GFA and amorphous structure could not be obtained. Critical diameter was found to be 3 ㎜ for Fe66Gd₂Tb₅B23Nb₄ bulk metallic glass (BMG). By exchanging Gd with Fe partially, TC could effectively be tuned in a quite broad temperature interval from 487 K (x = 0) to 380 K (x = 6) for which amorphous structure could not be obtained. Maximum magnetic entropy change (−ΔSM)max values were found to be 1.16, 0.84 Jkg−1K−1, and 0.54 J㎏−1K−1 as well as, refrigeration capacity (RC) values were obtained as 116 J/㎏, 84.84 J/㎏, and 40.50 J/㎏ under a low field change of 2 T for x = 0, 2, and 6, respectively. Although TC was shifted to lower temperatures by exchanging Fe with Gd partially, −(ΔSM)max decreased almost half of the base alloy and RC decreased approximately 1/3 of the base alloy.

The Outcome of Fungal Pneumonia with Hematological Cancer

        Eren Esma,Alp Emine,Cevahir Fatma,Tok Tuğba,Kılıç Ayşegül Ulu,Kaynar Leylagül,Yüksel Recep Civan 대한감염학회 2020 Infection and Chemotherapy Vol.52 No.4

Background: Fungal pneumonia is a common infectious complication of hematological cancer (HC) patients. In this retrospective study, the objective was set to identify the risk factors and outcome of fungal pneumonia in adult HC patients. Materials and Methods: This retrospective study was conducted with adult (>16 years) HC patients from January 2017 and December 2018. Results: During the study period, of 181 patients included 76 were diagnosed with fungal pneumonia. The most common HC was identified as acute myeloid leukaemia (40%). Of the participating patients, 52 (29%) were hematopoietic stem cell transplant (HSCT) recipients. The median age of patients with fungal pneumonia was significantly greater: 57 vs. 48 (odds ratio [OR]: 1.08) and they had longer hospitalization durations (OR: 1.14). Overall, 37 patients (20%) died, and 28-day mortality was significantly greater among patients with fungal pneumonia than without fungal pneumonia (33% vs. 11%). The most significant risk factors for mortality in fungal pneumonia were identified as need of intensive care unit (ICU) (OR: 191.2, P <0.001) and the need of vasopressor support (OR:81.6, P <0.012). ICU-mortality was (88%). Conclusion: Fungal pneumonia is a lethal complication in HC patients. Intensive care need is the most important predictive factor for mortality
