The effect of chemical composition of the sintering atmosphere on density, microstructure and mechanical properties of Fe-3%Mn-(Cr)-(Mo)-0.3%C steels is described. Pre-alloyed Astaloy CrM and CrL, ferromanganese and graphite were used as the starting powders. Following pressing in a rigid die, compacts were sintered at 1120 and in atmospheres having different ratio and furnace cooled to room temperature. It has been found that the atmosphere composition has negligible effect on the as-sintered properties of the investigated materials.

The purpose of this study was to analyze and compare intra and intergroup the immediate effect of the auricular and LR8 systemic acupuncture on the electromyographic activity of the trapezius with the trigger points. This is an experimental clinical trial; 40 people were split in 4 distinct groups (n = 10): GI mustard seed application in the auricular acupoint; GII bilateral needle application in the LR8 acupoint; GIII combination of the techniques; GIV/Control Group mustard seed application in an acupoint not linked to the muscle tension. The EMG was used to assess the muscle contraction for 5 seconds during the resting time and during the isometric contraction time. The EMG signal was first collect without the acupuncture intervention; then both techniques were applied for 5 minutes; and the EMG was collected again right after these applications. The Shapiro-Wilk test was used, the t test was paired with the Wilcoxon test to the intragroup comparison; One-way analysis of variance test for intergroup comparison. There was no statistical difference in the intragroup comparison for the groups. The same happened to the intergroup comparison before and after application. Systemic and auricular acupuncture did not promote immediate changes in the EMG activity of the trapezius muscle in individuals with MTrPs.

This study was undertaken to understand how Lentinula edodes modulates in vivo mutagenesis induced by alkylating agents in bone marrow and peripheral blood as described in our previous article. Male Swiss mice were pretreated for 15 consecutive days with aqueous extracts prepared from L. edodes, after which, the number of circulating blood cells, normal erythroid bone marrow cell cycling, and phagocytosis of micronucleated reticulocyte (MNRET) and activation of spleen macrophages were assessed. The results indicate that the antimutagenicity seen in bone marrow and peripheral blood is exerted by distinct compounds with different actions. The antimutagenic effect in bone marrow is exerted by compounds subject to degradation at deep-freeze storage temperature of - 20 C. On the other hand, compounds responsible for antimutagenicity in peripheral blood are not subject to degradation at - 20 C. The results also indicate that the antimutagenic action in peripheral blood leading to the reduction of circulating MNRET occurs in the spleen primarily through a phagocytic activity due to higher macrophage numbers and probably not due to the enhanced activation state of individual cells.

Ana Lu´cia A. Arruda,Carla J.B. Vieira,Daniella G. Sousa,Regilene F. Oliveira,Rachel O. Castilho 한국식품영양과학회 2011 Journal of medicinal food Vol.14 No.12
This study evaluated, in vitro, the antimicrobial activity of the hexane extract (JCHE), methanol extract (JCME),and chloroform fraction (JCCF) of bark from Jacaranda cuspidifolia Mart. (Family Bignoniaceae), a Brazilian medicinal plant, traditionally used as anti-syphilis and anti-gonorrhea treatment. The antimicrobial activity was evaluated using the disc diffusion method followed by the determination of minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) values. JCHE was not active against the bacteria evaluated. JCME presented antibacterial activity against Streptococcus pyogenes, Staphylococcus aureus, and Neisseria gonorrhoeae with MIC values of 16.3mg/mL, 9.1mg/mL, and 25.2mg/mL, respectively. JCCF was active against Staphylococcus epidermidis, S. aureus, Proteus mirabilis, Serratia marcescens, S. pyogenes, Enterobacter aerogenes, and N. gonorrhoeae with MIC values of 18.3mg/mL, 9.3mg/mL, 6.3mg/mL, 6.1mg/mL, 9.2mg/mL, 6.2mg/mL, and 25.2mg/mL,respectively. Phytochemical analysis of JCME and JCCF gave positive results for saponins, coumarins, flavonoids, tannins, quinones, alkaloids, triterpenes, and steroids. Verbascoside was isolated and identified as a major peak in JCME and JCCF highperformance liquid chromatography fingerprints and might contribute to the observed antimicrobial activity.

<P><B>Abstract</B></P><P>We investigated the biochemical properties of a 51.5kDa metalloprotease (arazyme, 3.4.24.40) secreted into the culture medium by <I>Aranicola proteolyticus</I>, a symbiotic bacterium of the spider <I>Nephila clavata</I>. The enzyme was purified to apparent homogeneity by ion exchange chromatography in a Resource Q column (FPLC system). The substrate specificity requirements of purified arazyme were examined using fluorescence resonance energy transfer (FRET) peptides derived from the lead sequence Abz-KLRFSKQ-EDDnp (Abz=<I>ortho</I>-aminobenzoic acid; EDDnp=ethylenediaminedinitrophenyl). Three series of peptides were assayed to map the S2, S1 and S′1 subsites: Abz-KXRFSKQ-EDDnp, Abz-KLXFSKQ-EDDnp and Abz-KLRXSKQ-EDDnp (X are natural amino acids). The results indicated that S1 subsite has a broad specificity, being Gly the preferred amino acid for this subsite followed by positively charged residues (Arg and His). The S2 and S′1 subsites accommodated better hydrophobic residues with aliphatic or aromatic side chains (Leu, Phe). The pH effect on hydrolysis of Abz-KLFFSKQ-EDDnp indicated that optimal hydrolysis occurred at pH 8.0 or higher. The effect of NaCl on the arazyme activity depends on the substrate, but in general the activity was reduced with this salt. The temperature did not affect the enzyme from 10 to 45°C, after which activity decreased sharply. Arazyme presented high hydrolytic activity on substance P and peptides related to bradykinin. In addition, arazyme activity was resistant to the treatment by pepsin, trypsin and chymotrypsin. In conclusion, arazyme has a broad hydrolytic profile and works in very aggressive conditions, which justify its potential use in therapeutics and biotechnological applications.</P>
Magnetic properties of Ni-Mn-Ga Heusler alloy films
Dubowik, J.,Goś,ciań,ska, I.,Kudryavtsev, Y. V.,Lee, Y. P.,Sová,k, P.,Konĉ,, M. WILEY-VCH Verlag 2006 Physica Status Solidi C Vol.3 No.1
<P>The films with composition Nix Mny Gaz (x = 50 ± 5, y = 25 ± 5, z = 25 ± 5) were deposited by flash-evaporation or sputtering on mica and glass substrates and annealed in a high vacuum at 673–973 K. X-ray diffraction at room temperature reveals the presence of B2 (or L21) type of structure depending on annealing conditions. Magnetic properties were studied by ferromagnetic resonance at temperatures from 78 K to 400 K and compared with electric resistivity data. It is shown that the magnetic properties of the films critically depend on their structural ordering and microstructure. The films annealed at T < 800 K reveal a complex magnetic behavior due to their specific microstructure while those annealed at T > 800 K show magnetic properties comparable with those of bulk Ni-Mn-Ga alloys. Sandra Maria Barbalho,Patrı´cia Cincotto dos Santos Bueno,De´bora Souza Delazari,Elen Landgraf Guiguer,,Daniel Pereira Coqueiro,Adriano Cressoni Arau´jo,Maricelma da Silva Soares de Souza,Fla´via M.V. 한국식품영양과학회 2015 Journal of medicinal food Vol.18 No.3
Manilkara zapota is a tropical evergreen tree belonging to the Sapotaceae family; its parts are used in alternative medicine to treat coughs and colds and possess diuretic, antidiarrheal, antibiotic, antihyperglycemic, and hypocholesterolemic effects. There are no studies on metabolic profile after using the fruit, and this study aimed at evaluating the effects of the leaf and pulp of M. zapota fruit on the metabolic profile of Wistar rats. Male rats were treated for 50 days with M. zapota leaf juice or fruit juice, after which their biochemical and body composition profiles were analyzed (glycemia, triglycerides, high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-c), insulin, leptin, aspartate transaminase, alanine aminotransferase, Lee Index, and body mass index). Our results indicate significantly lower levels of glycemia, insulin, leptin, cholesterol, and triglycerides and augmented levels of HDL-c in animals treated with the leaves or fruit of this plant. The percentage of weight gain also declined in animals treated with M. zapota fruit pulp. The use of the M. zapota may be helpful in the prevention of obesity, diabetes, dyslipidemia, and their complications.

Subunit vaccines are safer and more stable than live vaccines although they have the disadvantage of eliciting poor immune response. To develop a subunit vaccine, an effective delivery system targeting the key elements of the protective immune response is a prerequisite. In this study, oxidized carbon nanospheres (OCNs) were used as a subunit vaccine delivery system and tuberculosis (TB) was chosen as a model disease. TB is among the deadliest infectious diseases worldwide and an effective vaccine is urgently needed. The ability of OCNs to deliver recombinant Mycobacterium tuberculosis (Mtb) proteins, Ag85B and HspX, into bone marrow derived macrophages (BMDMs) and dendritic cells (BMDCs) was investigated. For immunization, OCNs were mixed with the two TB antigens as well as the adjuvant monophosphoryl lipid A (MPL). The protective efficacy was analyzed in vaccinated mice by aerosol Mtb challenge with a virulent strain of Mtb and the bacterial burdens were measured. The results showed that OCNs are highly effective in delivering Mtb proteins into the cytosol of BMDMs and BMDCs. Upon immunization, this vaccine formula induced robust Th1 immune response characterized by cytokine profiles from restimulated splenocytes and specific antibody titer. More importantly, enhanced cytotoxic CD8+ T cell activation was observed. However, it did not reduce the bacteria burden in the lung and spleen from the aerosol Mtb challenge. Taken together, OCNs are highly effective in delivering subunit protein vaccine and induce robust Th1 and CD8+ T cell response. This vaccine delivery system is suitable for application in settings where cell-mediated immune response is needed.
