Petrology and geochemistry of basaltic pillow lava in the Hantangang River Geopark area
Chungwan Lim 대한지질학회 2021 대한지질학회 학술대회 Vol.2021 No.10
Mechanism of formation of basaltic pillow lava Hantangang River was deduced from mineralogy and melt inclusion chemistry. The volatile conduct was investigated by studying melt inclusions trapped in the phenocrysts and those of the whole rocks and the matrix glasses. In previous research, Choi et al . (2014) insist that Jeongok basalts, including Hantangang River pillow lava, composite EM1 for the North China block, and EM2 for the South China block of Late Cenozoic intraplate volcanism in the asthenosphere. However, the geodynamic settings in the study area are still unknown. Therefore, this work demonstrates how applying the methods of melt inclusion investigations of minerals, more specifically, of olivine, enables us to obtain petrological and geochemical information from basaltic pillow lava Hantangang River. Melt inclusions in olivine bear evidence of the composition and formation conditions of the primary melt and their mixing products, including the initial water contents of the mantle melts. This information is partially or completely obliterated in the compositions of rocks and glasses by later processes of mixing, contamination, degaussing, and crystal fractionation. Twenty-one examples in this research are considered to determine the abundances of H₂O in melt inclusions trapped in the olivines of mantle magmas from various geodynamic settings provide important information on the concentrations and behavior of H₂O in mantle source regions and magmatic systems in East Asia.
