This study was conducted to investigate the haloacetic acid (HAAs) formation characteristics in raw and treated water in Korea. The raw and treated water from the five major rivers were examined to measure the HAAs concentrations and compared those with literature values. Major findings are as follows. First, average HAAs concentration of treated water (collected from three water treatment plants) in Korea appeared to be 62.5±66.7㎍/L (n=7) and this level is higher than the average trihalomethanes (THMs) concentration (13.2±12.9㎍/L, n=6933) reported recently. Second, the average formation potential of TCAA and DCAA after three days was found as 103±74㎍/L (n=14) and 76±36㎍/L (n=14), respectively. As this result was applied to US-EPA developed model equation for TCAA and DCAA formation, dissolved organic matter (DOM) in Korea has a tendency to produce more TCAA and DCAA as compared to US. This phenomenon was especially notable in DCAA. The sum of weight percentage of TCAA and DCAA which are individual component of HAAS was composed of 80% of HAAs.

Laboratory animal are critical and fundamental for studying medicine, pharmacy, veterinary medicine, agriculture, nutrition, environmental and health science, and so on. The Three Rs of Russel & Burch have provided an important ethical underpinning for the use of animals in science and research groups are established in Baltimore, Davis, Berlin, Utrecht and London to specifically promote the Three Rs and encourage relevant research. The fifth world congresses on Alternatives and animal use in the life sciences, held from 1993 to 2005, have made a major contribution to international dialogue on this subject. Regular updates are provided on the reduction, refinement and replacement of animal use in regulatory testing of veterinary biological products, in particular. This paper briefs the renewed animal welfare act as an effort to meet the Three Rs and outlines laboratory animal welfare systems, and presents some recommendations for improving laboratory animal welfare in Korea.

A 16Mb 1-transistor /1-capacitor (1T1C) FeRAM device was fabricated with lead-free Bi3.25La0.75Ti3.0O12 (BLT) capacitors. The key integration processes contain a scalable MTP (Merged Top-electrode and Plate-line) cell structure and reliable BLT ferroelectric capacitors. Ferroelectric properties of BLT films were optimized on the newly developed MTP cell structure. BLT films were coated on Pt/IrOx/Ir bottom electrode using sol-gel solutions. The composition of the optimized BLT film was about Bi3.25La0.75Ti3.0O12. The switchable polarization obtained in a 100nm-thick BLT film was about 20 µC/cm2 at the 3 V applied voltage, and the optimized BLT film showed a few fatigue losses about 10% up to 1 × 1011 cycles. The imprint properties of the BLT film were also characterized at 25°C and 90°C operating temperature after 125°C data storage. The average cell signal sensing margin between data '1' and data '0' was measured to be about 900 mV, which is a sufficiently large margin for device operation.

Development of a new ball-type phantom for evaluation of the image layer of panoramic radiography
Yeom, Han-Gyeol,Kim, Jo-Eun,Huh, Kyung-Hoe,Yi, Won-Jin,Heo, Min-Suk,Lee, Sam-Sun,Choi, Soon-Chul Korean Academy of Oral and Maxillofacial Radiology 2018 Imaging Science in Dentistry Vol.48 No.4
Purpose: This study proposes a new ball-type phantom for evaluation of the image layer of panoramic radiography. Materials and Methods: The arch shape of an acrylic resin phantom was derived from average data on the lower dental arch in Korean adult males. Metal balls with a 2-mm diameter were placed along the center line of the phantom at a 4-mm mesiodistal interval. Additional metal balls were placed along the 22 arch-shaped lines that ran parallel to the center line at 2-mm buccolingual intervals. The height of each ball in the horizontal plane was spaced by 2.5 mm, and consequently, the balls appeared oblique when viewed from the side. The resulting phantom was named the Panorama phantom. The distortion rate of the balls in the acquired image was measured by automatically calculating the difference between the vertical and horizontal length using $MATLAB^{(R)}$. Image layer boundaries were obtained by applying various distortion rate thresholds. Results: Most areas containing metal balls (91.5%) were included in the image layer with a 50% distortion rate threshold. When a 5% distortion rate threshold was applied, the image layer was formed with a small buccolingual width along the arch-shaped center line. However, it was medially located in the temporomandibular joint region. Conclusion: The Panorama phantom could be used to evaluate the image layer of panoramic radiography, including all mesiodistal areas with large buccolingual width.
Klebsiella gr. 47을 이용한 생물학적 폐수처리에서 BTX 분해 특성
염승호,최석순 한국환경과학회 1998 한국환경과학회지 Vol.7 No.3
A microorganism, Klebsiella gr. 47, capable of degrading BTX(benzene, toluene and xylene) was isolated from oil-contaminated soil and its characteristics of BTX degradation were investigated. When benzene and toluene were fed to Klebsiella gr. 47 simultaneously, they showed competitive inhibition. The degradation rate of xylene was enhanced as much as 3 times when xylene was fed with benzene or toluene. Degradation rate of benzene and toluene was also enhanced by cocultured with Alcaligenes xylosoxidans. When benzene-adapted microorganism was used, each BTX compound was degraded efficiently within 5 hours.
