        Overview of Second and Foreign Language Writing: Characteristics, Perspectives and Pedagogical Approaches

        Writing plays a crucial role in communication and knowledge construction. In the era of globalization, under the impact of English as a lingua franca, there is an increasing need for written communications in English. This paper provides a review of both theoretical and empirical research on second and foreign language writing, for the purpose of informing ESL/EFL teachers especially those in Asian countries. The review first discusses distinctions between first language (L1) writing and second and foreign language (L2) writing with more focus on L2 writing situated in Asian contexts. Then it presents approaches to teaching writing in L2 contexts which originated from L1 writing pedagogy. Next, it provides a review of empirical research on the implementation of these approaches in L2 contexts, especially in Asian contexts. Finally, the paper concludes with pedagogical implications for L2 writing instruction in this particular context. It is hoped that this paper could offer Asian EFL/ESL teachers a series of pedagogical choices and help them improve the quality of English education in general, and English writing in particular.

        Factors Affecting Intention to Purchase Green Products in Vietnam

        The study aims to assess factors affecting intention to purchase green products in Vietnam. The study employs samples from customers who have actually experienced green consumption in Vietnam. The samples were collected by convenient sampling methods. The survey obtained 206 responses with full information. The survey was conducted from October 2019 to January 2020. The measurement scale was a 5-point scale with 1- completely disagree and 5- strongly agree. This study employs factor analysis and structural equation modelling analysis. The results showed that the social and environment sustainability awareness have positive effects on altruism of customers who are interested in green consumption. Altruism also has the same direction on green purchase intention. Besides, the attitude toward buying green and health consciousness affects green purchase intention. At the same time, the altruism and attitude towards buying green products also influence positively on green purchase intention. Besides, the health consciousness positively affects attitude towards buying green products. The results show that the health consciousness has a negative impact on intention to purchase green products. The findings suggest that it is necessary to raise customers' health consciousness, customers' altruism from disseminating knowledge about environmental protection as well as society to enhance the green consumption in Vietnam.

        A highly sensitive fluorescent chemosensor for simultaneous determination of Ag(I), Hg(II), and Cu(II) ions: Design, synthesis, characterization and application

        <P><B>Abstract</B></P> <P>A fluorescent chemosensor based on dimethylaminocinnamaldehyde-aminothiourea (DA) has been designed, synthesized, and applied with a combined theoretical and experimental study. The synthetic path, optimized molecular structure and characteristics of DA were carried out using the calculations at the B3LYP/LanL2DZ level of theory. The experimental investigations have a good agreement with the theoretical results. DA can be used as a chemosensor for simultaneous quantification of silver, copper, and mercury ions in aqueous solution at the ppb level.         Temperature-Dependent Photoluminescence and Absoprtion of CdSe Quantum dots Embedded in PMMA

        Photoluminescence and absorption studies of CdSe quantum dots in polymethylmethacrylate (PMMA) were carried out in the temperature range 14 - 310 K. We found an anomalously discontinuous variation of the photoluminescence intensity and the peak position around 50 K. Two different kinds of states, whose populations are temperature-dependent, are proposed as the origins for the emissions at lower and higher temperatures.         Predicting Financial Distress Distribution of Companies

        Purpose: Predicting the financial distress distribution of an enterprise is important to warn enterprises about their future. Predicting the possibility of financial distress helps companies have action plans to avoid the possibility of bankruptcy. In this study, the author conducted a forecast of the financial distress distribution of enterprises. Research design, data and methodology: The forecasting method is based on Logit and Discriminant analysis models. The data was collected from companies listed on Vietnam Stock Exchange from 2012 to 2020. In which there are both companies suffer from financial distress and non-financial distress. Results: The forecast analysis results show that the Logistic model has better predictability than the Discriminant analysis model. At the same time, the results also indicate three main factors affecting the financial distress of enterprises at all three research stages: (1) Liquidity, (2) Interest payment, and (3) firm size. In addition, at each stage, the impact of factors on financial distress differs. Conclusions: From the results of this study, the author also made several recommendations to help companies better control company operations to avoid falling into financial distress. Adjustments to current assets, debt, and company expansion considerations are the most important factors for companies.

      • Transferrin-conjugated pH-sensitive platform for effective delivery of porous palladium nanoparticles and paclitaxel in cancer treatment

        <P><B>Abstract</B></P> <P>Porous palladium (Pd) nanoparticles have garnered great research attention due to their potential anticancer activity and photothermal effect. In this study, a transferrin-conjugated pH-sensitive platform (Tf-PPP), comprising porous Pd nanoparticles (PdNPs) and paclitaxel (PTX), was successfully developed for combined chemo-phototherapy. Tf-PPPs have a small size of 164.6 ± 8.7 nm, PDI of 0.278 ± 0.029, and negative charge (-13.2 ± 1.8 mV). Poly(acrylic acid)-poly(ethylene oxide) (PAA-PEO), a pH sensitive polymer, was used to achieve pH-dependent drug release from nanoparticles. Transferrin (Tf) conjugated on the surface of nanoplatforms could enhance the cellular uptake and prolong nanoparticle accumulation in the tumor site. The combination of phototherapy induced by PdNPs and chemotherapeutic agent (PTX) could exhibit synergistic anticancer activities. Consistent findings were observed in both <I>in vitro</I> experiments including cytotoxicity, live/dead assay, and assessment of apoptotic protein levels, and <I>in vivo</I> antitumor study in MCF-7 tumor-bearing mice, with results decreasing in the following order: Tf-PPPs + NIR > Tf-PPPs > PPPs + NIR > PPPs > PTX > PdNPs.       • Electro-osmotic drag effect on the methanol permeation for sulfonated poly(ether ether ketone) and nafion 117 membranes.

        <P>Electro-osmotic drag effect on the methanol permeation was investigated for sulfonated poly(ether ether ketone) (sPEEK) membrane, and its result was compared with that of Nafion 117 membrane. The electro-osmotic drag coefficient was determined from the limiting current density measured at different temperature. The methanol permeability of sPEEK membrane increased with temperature but its temperature dependence was not as strong as that of Nafion 117 membrane. The methanol permeability or the total methanol flux of Nafion 117 membrane was at least twice higher than that of sPEEK70 membrane (sPEEK membrane with 70% sulfonation degree), as the methanol permeation was highly contributed by the electro-osmotic drag effect. This higher electro-osmotic drag of Nafion 117 membrane is attributed to the bigger ion cluster and waster channel in nanophase and thus more free water absorption than sPEEK membrane.</P>

        Mass spectrometry-based approaches to explore metabolism regulating ferroptosis

        Ferroptosis is a type of programmed cell death distinct fromapoptosis or necroptosis. Ferroptosis is well characterized byan iron-dependent accumulation of lipid peroxides and disruptionof cellular membrane integrity. Many metabolic alterationscan prevent or accelerate ferroptosis induction. Recent advancesin analytical techniques of mass spectrometry have allowedhigh-throughput analysis of metabolites known to be criticalfor understanding ferroptosis regulatory metabolism. In this review,we introduce mass spectrometry-based analytical methodscontributing to recent discovery of various metabolic pathwaysregulating ferroptosis, focusing on cysteine metabolism, antioxidantmetabolism, and poly-unsaturated fatty acid metabolism.         Polarization of Colloidal CdSe Quantum Dots

        The effects of the polarization of colloidal CdSe QDs on the optical transitions are discussed based on systematic studies of a colloidal CdSe-based QDs system as a function of the net QDs' polarity/polarization and of the solvent's polarity. The polarization of the QD/ligand complexes makes them water-soluble after appropriate cleaning processes. The polarization of the bare CdSe QDs is reasonably thought to originate from dangling bonds at the surfaces of the dots. Passivation of the Se dangling bond by hydrogen generated from ultraviolet irradiation of the CdSe QDs in water is clearly observed to cause a spectral blueshift and a photoluminescence enhancement.
