        Narrative inquiry as travel study method: affordances and constraints

        This article maps how narrative inquiry—the use of story to study human experience—has been employed as both method and form to capture cross-cultural learning associated with Western doctoral students’ travel study to eastern destinations. While others were the first to employ this method in the travel study domain, we are the first to comprehensively explore the affordances and constraints of the methodology and the possibilities it holds for illuminating knowledge developments, community growth, and identity transformations on the part of participating students. Story fragments illustrating each of these opportunities and challenges are drawn from the China Study Abroad Program, a program sponsored by the University of Houston’s Asian American Studies Center that has been underway since 1995. Affordances of the narrative inquiry research method include such things as detailed accounts of individuals in interaction with diverse people/places/things and explications of stories people live in and by. Accounts, which are “true for now,” as opposed to true for all time and the dangers of human fallibility form two examples of narrative inquiry’s constraints.

        일반학생용 체육진로흥미검사지 개발 및 타당화 검증

        본 연구의 목적은 체육분야의 진로에 관심이 있는 일반학생을 대상으로 체육분야의 직업에 대한 흥미를 측정할 수 있는 체육진로흥미검사지를 개발하는데 있다. 연구대상은 서울특별시 고등학생 658명을 대상으로, 편의표본추출법(convenience sampling method)으로 추출하였다. 자료처리는 SPSS와 AMOS 18.0을 이용하여, 신뢰도분석, 탐색적 및 확인적 요인분석을 사용하여 타당도를 검증하였다. 그 결과 체육진로흥미는 관계형, 창조형, 탐구형, 전략형의 4개 요인으로 구조화되어 있었다. 측정모형을 설정하고 일련의 확인적 요인분석을 실시한 결과 4개요인 62문항 척도가 적합성 판정 지수들에서 가장 적절하게 나타났다. 성별에 따른 구조동일성 검증 및 잠재평균 비교 검증에서는 여자가 관계형에서 남자가 탐구형에서 높은 수준을 나타내고 있었다. 이러한 결과는 체육진로흥미의 개념적 수준에서 비교문화적 보편성과 특수성 측면과 관련해 검토하고 논의하였다. The purpose of this study is to develop a sport career interest scale that measures interest of general students in the occupations in sports field. It was done with the 658 high school students who are interested in the sports career in Seoul, with a convenience sampling method. The data was analyzed with SPSS and AMOS 18.0 and validated with reliability analysis, exploratory factor analysis, and confirmatory factor analysis. As a result, it was found that students’ interest in sports career is structured with four factors: relational, inquiring, creative, and strategic factors. Setting a measurement model and conducting a serious of confirmatory factor analysis, 62 –item scales in four factors were found to be most suitable among the indicators to evaluate goodness of fit. In the test for group invariance by gender and comparative analysis of latent means, women showed high scores in relational factor while men showed high scores in inquiring factor. These findings were reviewed and discussed in relation to universality and peculiarity of comparative cultures at the conceptual level of interests in sports career.
