        Two New Species of Placolecis (Lichenized Ascomycota) from China

        Two new species of the lichen genus Placolecis are discovered in China, namely P. kunmingensis An. C. Yin & Li S. Wang and P. sublaevis An. C. Yin & Li S. Wang. The new combination P. loekoesiana (S.Y. Kondr., Farkas, J.J. Woo & Hur) An. C. Yin is proposed. Placolecis kunmingensis is characterized by having simple, spherical or ellipsoid, hyaline spores, and pear-shaped pycnidia; while P. sublaevis can be distinguished by its thallus forming larger aggregations with slightly flattened lobes at the thallus margin, and urn-shaped pycnidia. Descriptions, a phylogenetic tree and a key are provided for all the known Placolecis species in China.

        GROUND OBSERVATIONS OF SPRITES AND OTHER TLES IN TAIWAN

        Sprites, elves and blue jets are collectively denominated as the upper atmospheric transient luminous events (TLEs). They are recently discovered optical flashes between active thunderstorms and the ionosphere. In this report, a brief introduction to the most important characteristics of TLEs is given. Since 2001, scientists from the National Cheng Kung University have been performing yearly summer campaigns from various locations in Taiwan. The main achievements of their yearly campaign are presented.

      • Short-Term Forecasting for Harbor Waterway Currents Speeds

        The ocean currents speeds in the harbor waterway are directly related to the ability of the ship to in or out the harbor. Accurately predict the speeds can assist the ship to choose the right time for sailing. To solve this problem, we chose two models of linear and non-linear prediction. We had set sensors in Qinhuangdao for a long time, then using the collected data for training. Our test is using a lot of random data to train and predict with different steps and orders. The results show that both methods can use less original data to train the model, and finally achieve preferably prediction. According to the characteristics of Qinhuangdao harbor, Auto-Regressive (AR) model is more appropriate than Support Vector Regression (SVR) model.

        Jiao Hong’s Interpretation of the Lunyu: A Study of the Jiaoshi bisheng

        以“心學”觀點詮釋儒家經典在晩明蔚然成風, 這種經學的心學化傾向, 是對明代中前期獨尊朱注的突破。焦竑對《論語》的心學詮釋就是其中的一個代表。焦竑《焦氏筆乘續集》卷一《讀論語》八十餘條主要以《論語》文本爲載體來詮釋對心性之學和三敎會通的哲學思考。焦竑借孔子所云“空空”來形容天命和心性的本體狀態, 子貢的“億(臆)”則是對心性本體的背離, 心性的修養須由知性進而復性, 以回歸空的境界。焦竑主張三敎會通, 以儒家爲本位, 援佛、道二家以解儒。本文通過闡釋焦竑所用的“不二”的思想方法和所提倡的“止”的工夫, 說明它們與佛、道二敎的密切聯繫。由於具有自由的思想環境和多元的文化視野, 焦竑的詮釋具有融合、創新的特色, 爲原本趨於僵化的經學注釋注入了活力。 One intellectual trendwhich characterized thought during the lateMing dynasty 明(1368- 1644) was the practice of interpreting Confucian classics through heart-mind theory. This trend reflects a departure from the dominating influence of Zhu Xi’s 朱熹(1130-1200) interpretation of the classics which held such sway during the early and middle Ming dynasty. One representative of this late Ming dynasty thought is JiaoHong`s interpretation of the Lunyu 論語. As part of Jiao Hong’s Miscellaneous Notes (Jiaoshi bicheng 焦氏筆乘), the eighty notes in “On Reading the Lunyu (Du Lunyu 讀論語)” consist of philosophical thinking about the heart-mind theory and the integration of Confucianism, Buddhism and Taoism conducted through a textual analysis of the Lunyu. Jiao Hong 焦竑(1540-1620) describes the original state of heaven`s will and heart-mind by borrowing the words “kongkong 空空(empty)” from the Analects of Confucius. He also points out that Zigong, a disciple of Confucius, deviates from the nature of heart-mind by “yi 臆(guessing)”. Jiao argues that cultivation of the heart-mind begins with recognizing it and then returning it to the state of emptiness. JiaoHong proposes an amalgamation of the three religions, taking Confucianism as the essential and drawing on Buddhism and Taoism to support it. This paper focuses on the thinking method of “non-duality” adopted by Jiao and the practice of “samatha” that Jiao advocates, discussing their relation with Buddhism and Taoism. Because it fosters an environment which encourages free thinking and a multi-cultural view, Jiao Hong`s integrated and innovative interpretation of the Lunyu should be seen as injecting important new vitality into the rigid field of studies dedicated to the Confucian classics.         Mangiferin ameliorates cardiac fibrosis in D-galactose-induced aging rats by inhibiting TGF-β/p38/MK2 signaling pathway

        Aging is the process spontaneously occurred in living organisms. Cardiac fibrosis is a pathophysiological process of cardiac aging. Mangiferin is a well-known C-glucoside xanthone in mango leaves with lots of beneficial properties. In this study, rat model of cardiac fibrosis was induced by injected with 150 mg/kg/d D-galactose for 8 weeks. The age-related cardiac decline was estimated by detecting the relative weight of heart, the serum levels of cardiac injury indicators and the expression of hypertrophic biomakers. Cardiac oxidative stress and local inflammation were measured by detecting the levels of malondialdehyde, enzymatic antioxidant status and proinflammatory cytokines. Cardiac fibrosis was evaluated by observing collagen deposition via masson and sirius red staining, as well as by examining the expression of extracellular matrix proteins via Western blot analysis. The cardiac activity of profibrotic TGF-β1/p38/MK2 signaling pathway was assessed by measuring the expression of TGF-β1 and the phosphorylation levels of p38 and MK2. It was observed that mangiferin ameliorated D-galactose-induced cardiac aging, attenuated cardiac oxidative stress, inflammation and fibrosis, as well as inhibited the activation of TGF-β1/p38/MK2 signaling pathway. These results showed that mangiferin could ameliorate cardiac fibrosis in D-galactose-induced aging rats possibly via inhibiting TGF-β/p38/MK2 signaling pathway.

        High-density single nucleotide polymorphism chip-based conservation genetic analysis of indigenous pig breeds from Shandong Province, China

        Objective: Shandong indigenous pig breeds are important Chinese pig resources. Their progressive population decline in recent decades has attracted attention towards their conservation. Conservation genetics of these indigenous breeds are essential for developing a conservation and utilization scheme. Methods: A high-density single nucleotide polymorphism (HD-SNP) chip-based comparative analysis of genetic characteristics was performed for seven Shandong indigenous pig breeds in the context of five Western commercial breeds. Results: The results showed that Shandong indigenous pig breeds varied greatly in genetic diversity, effective population size, inbreeding level, and genetic distance with the Western commercial breeds. Specifically, Laiwu and Dapulian displayed low genetic diversity, and had a genetically distant relationship with the Western commercial breeds (average F statistics [F<sub>ST</sub>] value of 0.3226 and 0.2666, respectively). Contrastingly, the other five breeds (Yantai, Licha, Yimeng, Wulain, and Heigai) displayed high genetic diversity within breed and had some extent of mixture pattern with the Western commercial breeds, especially Duroc and Landrace (F<sub>ST</sub> values from 0.1043 to 0.2536). Furthermore, intensive gene flow was discovered among the seven Shandong indigenous breeds, particularly Wulian, Licha, and Heigai, as indicated by the large cluster formed in the principal component analysis scatterplot and small population differentiation (average of 0.1253) among them. Conclusion: Our study advances the understanding of genetic characteristics of Shandong indigenous breeds and provides essential information for developing an appropriate conservation and utilization scheme for these breeds.

      • Tetrathiafulvalene Hetero Radical Cation Dimerization in a Redox-Active [2]Catenane

        <P>The electronic properties of tetrathiafulvalene (TTF) can be tuned by attaching electron-donating or electron-withdrawing substituents. An electron-rich macrocyclic polyether containing two TTF units of different constitutions, namely 4,4′-bis(hydroxymethyl)tetrathiafulvalene (OTTFO) and 4,4′-bisthiotetrathiafulvalene (STTFS), has been synthesized. On two-electron oxidation, a hetero radical dimer is formed between OTTFO<SUP>•+</SUP> and STTFS<SUP>•+</SUP>. The redox behavior of the macrocyclic polyether has been investigated by electrochemical techniques and UV–vis and electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) spectroscopies. The [2]catenane in which the macrocyclic polyether is mechanically interlocked with the cyclobis(paraquat-<I>p</I>-phenylene) (CBPQT<SUP>4+</SUP>) ring has also been prepared using template-directed protocols. In the case of the [2]catenane, the formation of the TTF hetero radical dimer is prevented sterically by the CBPQT<SUP>4+</SUP> ring. After a one-electron oxidation, a 70:30 ratio of OTTFO<SUP>•+</SUP> to STTFS<SUP>•+</SUP> is present at equilibrium, and, as a result, two translational isomers of the [2]catenane associated with these electronically different isomeric states transpire. EPR titration spectroscopy and simulations reveal that the radical states of the two constitutionally different TTF units in the [2]catenane still experience long-range electronic intramolecular coupling interactions, despite the presence of the CBPQT<SUP>4+</SUP> ring, when one or both of them are oxidized to the radical cationic state.         Pharmacokinetic Behavior of Gentiopicroside From Decoction of Radix Gentianae, Gentiana Macrophylla After Oral Administration in Rats: a Pharmacokinetic Comaprison with Gentiopicroside after Oral and Intravenous Administration Alone

        The pharmacokinetics in rats of gentiopicroside (GPS) from orally administered decoctions of Radix Gentianae (DRG) and Gentiana macrophlla (DGM) were compared with that of GPS alone administered at 150 mg/kg orally and 30 mg/kg intravenously. The metabolic profile of GPS after intravenous injection could be fitted to two-compartment model whereas oral administration decoctions DRG or DGM, or GPS alone, could all be fitted to a one-compartment model. After oral administration of GPS alone, GPS was absorbed quickly and reached a maximum plasma concentration ($C_{max}$) value, 5.78 ${\pm}$ 2.24 ${\mu}g/mL$ within 0.75 ${\pm}$ 0.62 h. The plasma level of GPS declined with a $T_{1/2ke}$, 3.35 ${\pm}$ 0.76 h. After oral administration of decoctions DRG and DGM, GPS was absorbed and reached significantly higher maximum concentrations of 10.53 ${\pm}$ 3.20 ${\mu}g/mL$ (p < 0.01) and 7.43 ${\pm}$ 1.64 ${\mu}g/mL$ (p < 0.05) at later time points 1.60 ${\pm}$ 0.76 (p < 0.01) and 2.08${\pm}$0.74 h (p < 0.05), for DRG and DGM respectively, compared with oral GPS alone. Significantly larger AUC values were found for decoctions of GPS (83.49 ${\pm}$ 20.8 ${\mu}g{\cdot}h/mL$ for DRG and 59.43 ${\pm}$ 12.9 ${\mu}g{\cdot}h/mL$ for DGM) compared with oral GPS alone (32.67 ${\pm}$ 12.9 ${\mu}g{\cdot}h/mL$. The results demonstrate that the bioavailability of GPS was markedly improved when administered as a decoction than as purified GPS. The decoction from Radix Gentianae provided 2.5 times better bioavailability and that from Gentiana macrophlla 1.8 times higher. The study confirms the importance of careful pharmacokinetic analysis in the characterization of herbal medicines when applied for future clinical applications.
