Honeybees (Apis mellifera) modulate dance communication in response to pollution by imidacloprid

        Zhang Zu Yun,Li Zhen,Huang Qiang,Yan Wei Yu,Zhang Li Zhen,Zeng Zhi Jiang 한국응용곤충학회 2020 Journal of Asia-Pacific Entomology Vol.23 No.2

Imidacloprid, one of the most commonly used insecticides, is highly toxic to honeybees and other beneficial insects. Imidacloprid is a chloronicotinyl insecticide, which has a highly specific affinity to the nicotinic acetylcholine receptors (nAChRs) in the honeybee’s nervous system. So it may interfere with dance behavior and memory formation. We found the waggle dances were modulated in honeybees fed sucrose water containing imidacloprid (pesticide group) compared to those fed normal sucrose water (control group). In our data, dancers of the pesticide group significantly increased the variance of divergence angle and the return phases in waggle dances than the control group. And the dance followers in pesticide group significantly increased the variance of crop content than the control group. Furthermore, four learning and memory related genes were significantly regulated at the gene expression levels between pesticide and control group. Our data revealed that the sublethal dose of imidacloprid impaired the honeybees’ learning and memory and resulted in cognitive disorder. The dancers may adjust their recruitment behavior leading to the observed reduced number of followers. We conclude that modulation of in-hive communication serves to protect the colony from foraging toxic food.

      • Efficacy and Safety of Endostar® Combined with Chemotherapy in Patients with Advanced Soft Tissue Sarcomas

        Zhang, Lu-Ping,Liao, Xing-Yun,Xu, Yan-Mei,Yan, Lv-Jun,Yan, Gui-Fang,Wang, Xin-Xin,Duan, Yu-Zhong,Sun, Jian-Guo Asian Pacific Journal of Cancer Prevention 2013 Asian Pacific journal of cancer prevention Vol.14 No.7

Background: Soft tissue sarcomas (STS) are a heterogeneous group of tumors, and approximately 40-50% of patients with STS develop metastatic disease. The median overall survival of those patients was 12 months and their 5-year survival rate was 8%. Therefore, study on more effective treatment, especially the targeting therapies, is urgently needed. Objective: To evaluate the efficacy and safety of Endostar$^{(R)}$ combined with chemotherapy in patients with advanced STS. Methods: A retrospective case-series study was conducted in Cancer Institute of PLA, Xinqiao Hospital. A total of 71 patients suffering from advanced STS (IIB - IV) were included, of whom 49 cases treated with chemotherapy alone were defined as the control group and the rest 22 cases treated with the traditional chemotherapy combined with Endostar$^{(R)}$ were defined as the test group. The short-term therapeutic effects including objective response rate (ORR), disease control rate (DCR) and safety were evaluated in the two groups. In the follow-up, progression-free survival (PFS) and overall survival (OS) were also observed. Results: In the test and control groups, the ORR was 18.2% and 12.2%, respectively (P=0.767), and the DCR was 86.4% and 61.2%, respectively (P=0.034). The median time to progression in the test and control groups was 120 days and 70 days with significant difference (P = 0.017), while the median overall survival was 452 days and 286 days without significant difference (P=0.503). The one-year survival rate in the test group and control group was 56.2% and 35.4%, respectively, while the two-year survival rate was 30.2% and 26.5%, respectively. No significant difference in the side effects was found between the two groups. Conclusions: Endostar$^{(R)}$ combined with chemotherapy resulted in a higher DCR and longer PFS in the patients with advanced STS, and the toxicity was tolerable.

Study on molten salt oxidation process of simulated Co doped cation exchange resins

        Yun Xue,Yue-Lin Wang,Yu Li,Wen-Da Xu,Fu-Qiu Ma,Yang-Hai Zheng,Qing-Guo Zhang,Zhi Zhang,Mi-lin Zhang,Yong-De Yan 한국공업화학회 2023 Journal of Industrial and Engineering Chemistry Vol.126 No.-

Cation exchange resins (CERs) are widely applied to purify waste liquids generated during the operationof nuclear reactors. The radioactive nuclides 60Co and 58Co are important corrosion activation products inreactor cooling water. In this study, the simulated Co doped CERs were oxidized with ternary carbonate. According to the thermogravimetric analysis (TG), the decomposition of Co doped CERs includes threeprocesses: 1. Elimination of the osmotic water; 2. Pyrolysis of sulfonic acid group; 3. Destruction of styrene–divinylbenzene copolymer. The X-Ray Diffraction (XRD) patterns indicate that sulfur mainly exists inthe form of sulfate in waste salt. The Co2+ undergoes the path of CoS2 ? Co3O4 with the increase of temperatureand the transition point is 650 C. Combined with Fourier Transform Infrared Spectrometer (FTIR)spectra and X-ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy (XPS) analysis, sulfonic acid groups begin to decomposeat 350 C. During the molten salt oxidation process, most of the sulfur in sulfonic acid groups is entrappedby carbonate as the form of sulfate, and a little of which remains as sulfone group, sulfoxide group andsulfur bridge in residue. When the resins are oxidized at 800 C, the retention rate of Co2+ is 97.3%, indicatingthat the molten salt oxidation can effectively remain Co2+ and convert it into a more stablesubstance.

Combined Detection of Serum MiR-221-3p and MiR-122-5p Expression in Diagnosis and Prognosis of Gastric Cancer

Zhang, Yan,Huang, Huifeng,Zhang, Yun,Liao, Nansheng The Korean Gastric Cancer Association 2019 Journal of gastric cancer Vol.19 No.3

Purpose: To investigate the clinical value of serum miR-221-3p and miR-122-5p expression levels in the diagnosis and prognosis of gastric cancer. Materials and Methods: Serum samples from 141 gastric cancer cases (gastric cancer group), 110 gastric polyps (gastric polyp group), and 75 healthy people (healthy control) were used to detect miR-221-3p and miR-122-5p expression using real-time reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction. Results: Serum miR-221-3p expression was significantly higher in the gastric cancer group than in the gastric polyp group, and it was significantly lower than that before operation. The miR-221-3p expression was significantly higher in the death group than in the survival group. The proliferation and migration ability significantly increased and the apoptosis rate significantly decreased by miR-221-3p transfection in gastric cancer cells. In contrast, the function of miR-122-5p in gastric cancer cells was opposite of miR-221-3p. Serum miR-221-3p expression was negatively correlated with that of miR-122-5p in gastric cancer. Serum miR-221-3p and miR-122-5p expressions were significantly correlated with the degree of differentiation, tumor, node, metastasis stage, lymph node metastasis, and invasion depth. miR-221-3p and miR-122-5p expression levels were independent prognostic factors for postoperative gastric cancer. In the diagnosis and predicting prognosis of gastric cancer, receiver operating characteristic analysis revealed that the area under curve of combined detection of serum miR-221-3p and miR-122-5p expression had a greater diagnostic effect than either single maker. Conclusions: The miR-221-3p and miR-122-5p are involved in the development of gastric cancer, and they have important clinical values in gastric cancer diagnosis and prognosis.

CHARACTERIZATION OF RATIONAL TIME-FREQUENCY MULTI-WINDOW GABOR FRAMES AND THEIR DUALS

        Zhang, Yan,Li, Yun-Zhang Korean Mathematical Society 2014 대한수학회지 Vol.51 No.5

This paper addresses multi-window Gabor frames with rational time-frequency product. Such issue was considered by Zibulski and Zeevi (Appl. Comput. Harmonic Anal. 4 (1997), 188-221) in terms of Zak transform matrix (so-called Zibuski-Zeevi matrix), and by many others. In this paper, we introduce of a new Zak transform matrix. It is different from Zibulski-Zeevi matrix, but more direct and convenient for our purpose. Using such Zak transform matrix we characterize rational time-frequency multi-window Gabor frames (Riesz bases and orthonormal bases), and Gabor duals for a Gabor frame. Some examples are also provided, which show that our Zak transform matrix method is efficient.

The Mitochondrial DNA Control Region Comparison Studies of Four Hinged Turtles and its Phylogentic Significance of the Genus Cuora Sensu Lato (Testudinata: Geoemydidae)

        Yan Yun Zhang,Liu Wang Nie,Yu Qing Huang,You Guang Pu,Li Zhang 한국유전학회 2009 Genes & Genomics Vol.31 No.5

The complete sequences of the mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) control region (CR) of Cistoclemmys flavomarginata, Cistoclemmys galbinifrons, Cuora aurocapitata and Cyclemys atripons were amplified by long-polymerase chain reaction (Long-PCR). The lengths were 1207 bp, 1722 bp, 1379 bp and 980 bp, respectively. Combining with the CR sequence of Pyxidea mouhotii (DQ659152), we compared the CR structure, and identified three functional domains (TAS, CD and CSB) in which the conservation sequences (TAS, CSB-F, CSB-1, CSB-2 and CSB-3) were also successfully identified according to their homology to those of other turtles. These 5 turtles have the identical CSB-2 and CSB-3 sequences, and 4 of them have the same CSB-1 sequence while there is one base transversion (T→A) in Cy. atripons. We analyzed the variable number of tandem repeat (VNTR) sequences or microsatellites at the 3` end of CR. The motifs of tandem repeats (7 types) are made up of 2-8 nucleotides, and the copy numbers are from 4 to 48. All of the 5 turtles except Cy. atripons have the "TATTATAT" repeats and are ended by TA. The results of CR structure analysis displayed that the Cuora, Cistoclemmys, and Pyxidea have many similarities, but differ from Cyclemys. With Indotestudo elongate (DQ080043) and Indotestudo forstenii (DQ080044) as outgroups, using the CR sequences (1123bp) excluded the microsatellites at the 3` end of CR, we constructed the molecular phylogenetic trees using the MP, ML and BI methods. The results showed that there was a strong support to the monophyly of the Cuora group consisting of Cuora, Cistoclemmys and Pyxidea, which has a close relationship with Mauremys and Chinemys but far from Cyclemys, which are consistent with the analysis of the CR structure of the 5 turtles.

      • Inhibitory Effects of Phenolic Alkaloids of Menispermum Dauricum on Gastric Cancer in Vivo

Zhang, Hong-Feng,Wu, Di,Du, Jian-Kuo,Zhang, Yan,Su, Yun-Ming Asian Pacific Journal of Cancer Prevention 2014 Asian Pacific journal of cancer prevention Vol.15 No.24

The present study was conducted to investigate effects and mechanisms of action of phenolic alkaloids of Menispermum dauricum (PAMD) on gastric cancer in vivo. In vitro, cell apoptosis of human gastric cancer cell line SGC-7901 was observed using fluorescence staining. In vivo, a mice model was constructed to observe tumor growth with different doses. Cell apoptosis was examined using flow cytometry and K-RAS protein expression using Western blotting. The mRNA expression of P53, BCL-2, BAX, CASPASE-3, K-RAS was examined by real-time PCR. PAMD significantly suppressed tumor growth in the xenograft model of gastric cancer in a dose-dependent manner (p<0.01). Functionally, PAMD promoted cell apoptosis of the SGC-7901 cells and significantly increased the rate of cell apoptosis of gastric tumor cells (p<0.05). Mechanically, PAMD inhibited the expression of oncogenic K-RAS both at the mRNA and protein levels. In addition, PAMD affected the mRNA expression of the cell apoptosis-related genes (P53, BCL-2, BAX, CASPASE-3). PAMD could suppress gastric tumor growth in vivo, possibly through inhibiting oncogenic K-RAS, and induce cell apoptosis possibly by targeting the cell apoptosis-related genes of P53, BCL-2, BAX, CASPASE-3.
