Background: Spontaneous recovery of severe alopecia areata is rare and the condition is difficult to treat. Objective: The aim of this study is to investigate and compare the effects and safety of steroid pulse therapy between oral and intravenous administrations between 1999 and 2010 at the Department of Dermatology, National Cheng Kung University Hospital. Methods: Data were retrospectively retrieved. A satisfactory response was defined as more than 75% hair regrowth in the balding area. Results: A total of 85 patients with more than 50% hair loss were identified and treated, with an overall satisfactory response rate of 51.8%. The mean follow-up time was 37.6 months, with a relapse rate of 22.7%. Patients with alopecia areata (hereafter, AA) of recent onset within one year showed higher response rates (p< 0.001) and lower relapse rates compared to patients with AA persisting for more than 1 year. Further, even in patients with alopecia totalis, alopecia universalis or ophiasis type, early treatment resulted in a satisfactory response rate of 47% among the treated patients. In general, oral therapy was as effective and well-tolerated as intravenous therapy. Conclusion: The response rate is determined by disease severity and time of intervention, not by the administration form of steroid pulse therapy. Oral steroid pulse therapy can be considered as the first-line treatment for patients with severe AA of recent onset within one year. (Ann Dermatol 25(4) 471∼474, 2013)

Chao-Yu Lin,Kai-Tai Song,Yi-Wen Chen,Shuo-Cheng Chien,Sin-Horng Chen,Chen-Yu Chiang,Jyh-Her Yang,Yi-Chiao Wu,Tzu-Jui Liu 제어로봇시스템학회 2012 제어로봇시스템학회 국제학술대회 논문집 Vol.2012 No.10
Intelligent human-robot interface helps a mobile robot to extract external information and interact with a user. User identification information allows a robot to generate appropriate behaviors and make personalized human-robot interaction (PHRI) more natural and safe. Most of service robots move around in various application settings, and biometric features always change during relative movements. In this work, a fusion recognition system based on face and speaker classifiers is designed to achieve the user recognition in various environments. We propose a method to fuse face and speech recognition results based on the concept of confidence indices. Through the derived confidence indices, the system combines the two classifiers and gives improved recognition results. Experiments on a laboratory home service robot show that person recognition rates in 15 environmental situations all outperform those of using single modality.
Numerical analysis of large stud shear connector embedded in HFRC
Yu Liang He,Chong Zhang,Li Chao Wang,Ying Yang,Yi Qiang Xiang 국제구조공학회 2021 Structural Engineering and Mechanics, An Int'l Jou Vol.80 No.5
To investigate the mechanical behavior of large stud shear connector embedded in hybrid fiber-reinforced concrete (HFRC), a refined 3D nonlinear finite element (FE) model incorporating the constitutive model of HFRC was developed using ANSYS. Firstly, the test results conducted by the authors (He et al. 2017) were used to validate FE model of push out tests. Secondly, a total of 27 specimens were analyzed with various parameters including fiber volume fractions of HFRC, diameter of studs and HFRC strength. Finally, an empirical equation considering the contribution of steel fiber (SF) and polypropylene fiber (PF) was recommended to estimate the ultimate capacity of large stud shear connector embedded in HFRC.
Bandwidth-Related Optimization in High-Speed Frequency Dividers using SiGe Technology
Chao-Zhou Nan,Xiao-Peng Yu,Wei-Meng Lim,Bo-Yu Hu,Zheng-Hao Lu,Yang Liu,Kiat-Seng Yeo 대한전자공학회 2012 Journal of semiconductor technology and science Vol.12 No.1
In this paper, the trade-off related to bandwidth of high-speed common-mode logic frequency divider is analyzed in detail. A method to optimize the operating frequency, band-width as well as power consumption is proposed. This method is based on bipolar device characteristics, whereby a negative resistance model can be used to estimate the optimal normalized upper frequency and lower frequency of frequency dividers under different conditions, which is conventionally ignored in literatures. This method provides a simple but efficient procedure in designing high performance frequency dividers for different applications. To verify the proposed method, a static divide-by-2 at millimeter wave ranges is implemented in 180 ㎚ SiGe technology. Measurement results of the divider demonstrate significant improvement in the figure of merit as compared with literatures.
Time-series Independent Component Analysis-aided Fault Detection for Running Gear Systems
Chao Cheng,Sheng Yang,Yu Song,Gang Liu 제어·로봇·시스템학회 2022 International Journal of Control, Automation, and Vol.20 No.9
By dealing with the non-Gaussian measurement and slow-change faults in running gear systems, this paper presents a fault detection (FD) scheme named time-series independent component analysis (TsICA), where the time-series characteristic is taken into account. Time-series algorithms can extract slow-change information in the data. The advantages of the proposed method are: 1) it can improve the FD power; 2) it considers the information in the data 3) it is suitable for non-Gaussian systems; 4) it is sensitive to slow-change faults; 5) it can effectively shorten the first time of fault detection. The feasibility of the proposed scheme is verified through a case study on running gear systems.
The EGF/hnRNP Q1 axis is involved in tumorigenesis via the regulation of cell cycle-related genes

Heterogeneous nuclear ribonucleoprotein (hnRNP) Q1, an RNA-binding protein, has been implicated in many posttranscriptional processes, including RNA metabolism and mRNA splicing and translation. However, the role of hnRNP Q1 in tumorigenesis remains unclear. We previously performed RNA immunoprecipitation (RIP)-seq analysis to identify hnRNP Q1-interacting mRNAs and found that hnRNP Q1 targets a group of genes that are involved in mitotic regulation, including Aurora-A. Here, we demonstrate that altering the hnRNP Q1 level influences the expression of the Aurora-A protein, but not its mRNA. Stimulation with epidermal growth factor (EGF) enhances both binding between hnRNP Q1 and Aurora-A mRNA as well as the efficacy of the hnRNP Q1-induced translation of Aurora-A mRNA. The EGF/hnRNP Q1-induced translation of Aurora-A mRNA is mediated by the mTOR and ERK pathways. In addition, we show that hnRNP Q1 up-regulates the translation of a group of spindle assembly checkpoint (SAC) genes. hnRNP Q1 overexpression is positively correlated with the levels of Aurora-A and the SAC genes in human colorectal cancer tissues. In summary, our data suggest that hnRNP Q1 plays an important role in regulating the expression of a group of cell cycle-related genes. Therefore, it may contribute to tumorigenesis by up-regulating the translation of these genes in colorectal cancer.

The electron emission characteristics, current emission stability, and uniformity of screen-printed carbon nanotube were enhanced by introducing a novel dual-particle-containing multicomponent-blending carbon nanotube cathode via the comprehensive combination of baking in the air and sintering in the inert gas atmosphere. The dual-particle-containing multicomponent-blending carbon nanotube cathode’s design and manufacturing improvements ensured its steeper emission curve variation amplitude, larger maximum emission current, better electron emission current of 806.7 μA was only 2.56 V/μm. When it was increased from 2.78 to 2.91 V/μm, the enhancing current emission amplitude of the proposed cathode was increased by 600.7 μA versus 324.1 μA of the conventional non-blending carbon nanotube cathode. The maximum emission current of the proposed cathode was 3762.5 μA. After the vacant static state of 72 h, the measured emission current had no obvious attenuation, and the fl uctuation rate of emission current did not exceed 5%. The backlight unit with dualparticle-containing multicomponent-blending carbon nanotube cathode was sealed, and the obtained emission image had high luminescence brightness and uniformity.
Mapping QTLs for Tissue Culture Response in Soybean (Glycine max (L.) Merr.)
Chao Yang,Tuanjie Zhao,Deyue Yu,Junyi Gai 한국분자세포생물학회 2011 Molecules and cells Vol.32 No.4
Quantitative trait loci (QTLs) that control the tissue cul-ture response in soybean were detected by using 184 recombinant inbred lines (RILs) derived from two varieties: Kefeng No.1 and Nannong 1138-2. The molecular map consisting of 834 molecular markers using this population covered space 2307.83 cM of the genome throughout 24 linkage groups. The performance of tissue culture in soybean was evaluated by two indices: callus induction frequency (CIF) and somatic embryos initiation frequency (SEIF). They were expressed as the number of explants producing callus/ the number of total explants and the number of explants producing somatic embryos/ the number of total explants, respectively. The RIL lines showed continuous segregation for both indices. With the composite interval mapping (CIM) described in Windows QTL Cartographer Version 2.5, three quantitative trait loci (QTLs) were identified for the frequency of callus induction, on chromosomes B2 and D2, accounting for phenotypic variation from 5.84% to 16.60%; four QTLs on chromo-some G were detected for the frequency of somatic em-bryos initiation and explained the phenotypic variation from 7.79% to 14.16%. The information of new QTLs identified in the present study will contribute to genetic improvement of regeneration traits with marker-assisted selection (MAS) in soybean.
Robust Stability Analysis of Time-varying Delay Systems via an Augmented States Approach
Chao-Yang Dong,Ming-Yu Ma,Qing Wang,Si-Qian Ma 제어·로봇·시스템학회 2018 International Journal of Control, Automation, and Vol.16 No.4
This paper focuses on the robust stability analysis of linear systems with time varying delays. The second derivative of the state is used to construct a novel Lyapunov-Krasovskii functional (LKF). Then, both the integrals and derivatives of the states along with the delayed states could be taken into consideration in handling of the LKF. We introduce these augmented variables and establish correlations between them. Moreover, our approach makes it available that quadratic convex combination can be applied not only to the time delay, but also to the derivative of it. Robust stability criteria are presented, and numerical examples illustrate that the methods are less conservative.
