        A Pictorial Review of I-123 MIBG Imaging of Neuroblastoma Utilizing a State-of-the-Art CZT SPECT/CT System

        The field of nuclear medicine is entering a new era of gamma-camera technology. Solid-state SPECT/CT systems will graduallyreplace the thallium-activated sodium-iodide NaI(Tl) systems. This digital technology allows drastic improvements inimage quality, radiotracer dose reduction, and procedure efficiency. This pictorial review presents our initial experience onan NM/CT 870 CZT system (GE Healthcare), equipped with dual-head cadmium zinc telluride (CZT) detectors, for I-123metaiodobenzylguanidine (MIBG) imaging in pediatric neuroblastoma. On planar imaging, CZT shows greater image qualitythan at conventional gamma-camera using the Infinia Hawkeye (GE Healthcare). Physiologic structures such as salivaryglands and myocardium show sharper borders with a more notable signal-to-noise ratio at CZT than conventional gammacamera. On SPECT imaging, the CZT scanner, combined with resolution recovery, demonstrates either comparable or greaterimage quality at 80% of the conventional gamma camera’s acquisition time. Due to the 2.46-mm detector pixel with fullyregistered collimator holes matching each pixel and direct conversion of photons into electrical signals, the CZT gammacamera system provides significant advantages in photon localization and energy resolution.

        L2 Students' Perceptions and Practices of both Giving and Receiving Online Peer-Feedback

        Citing a lack of discussion about the particular effect of giving peer feedback, this study of student perceptions and actual practice seeks to map out and account rather for the benefits afforded by both sides of the online peer review process. A group of 61 university English education majors completed seven peer-to-peer (P2P) process writing tasks during one semester and then completed an in-house developed P2P perceptions questionnaire. Results suggest encouraging continuities between the peer review practice itself and its role in alleviating student writing anxieties. In so doing, the study hopes to provide a better understanding of the training students need in order to benefit from computer assisted collaborative learning activities such as P2P writing tasks. While students proved able to focus on a wide range of different grammar, content, and organizational aspects of their peer’s work, they appeared also to enjoy the responsibility of helping one another improve their writing. Furthermore, they reported a larger number of higher-level improvements associated with the giving part of the peer review process than with the feedback received. Finally, this accounting of student perceptions the peer review process correlate positively with an analysis of their actual peer comments, and provide therefore insight into the language learning strategy training afforded by the P2P process as well as into its mitigating effects on L2 writing anxiety.

        Auspex: Ecosystemic Emergence as Generative Soundscape

        이 글은 음향 틈새 가설에 맞추어 구축된 코퍼스(말뭉치) 기반 연결 합성 기술을 통해 다중 채널 사운드스케이프(소리풍경)를 생성하는 에이전트(행위자) 기반 인공 생명 생태계인 오스펙스(복점관)에 대하여 개괄적으로 보여준다. 이것을 개발하게 된 것은 두 가지 프로토타입 시스템을 검토함으로써 파악하게 되었다; 보이드 구동boid-driven(한 단위별로 작동케 하여 큰 무리를 이루는) 그래뉼러 신디사이저인 보이드그란BoidGran과 떼지어 움직이는 생명체를 음향적으로 표현하는 데 주안점을 둔 시청각 퍼포먼스 시스템, 스웜스케이프(떼풍경)Swarmscape가 그 둘이다. 이들을 분석하는데 시스템의 결과를 맥락화하는 개념적인 접근 방식이 포함되었다. This paper presents an overview of Auspex, an agent-based artificial life ecosystem generating multichannel soundscapes from corpus-based concatenative synthesis techniques aligned with the acoustic niche hypothesis. Insights into its development are derived from the review of two prototypical systems; BoidGran, a boid-driven granular synthesizer, and Swarmscape, an audio-visual performance system that emphasizes the acoustic emergence of swarming bodies. Analysis includes conceptual approaches in the contextualization of the system’s output.

      • THE DECLINE OF THE UK HAND KNIT CRAFT AT THE CLOSE OF THE TWENTIETH CENTURY

        At the end of the twentieth century the decline of the domestic knitting craft was of paramount concern to the yarn companies and retailers that served this market sector. As demand reduced in the UK so did the number of specialist retailers. This was as detrimental to the yarn companies as it was to the craft. Research undertaken in 1999 by the author suggests that it is probably true to say that the knitting craft was at that point in time at its lowest point of popularity throughout the entire twentieth century. Throughout the twentieth century in the UK the popularity of crafts as domestic leisure pursuits fluctuated. Increased interest is reported to be primarily related to economic recession, where necessity is identified as being the greatest motivation for craft engagement; and craft engagement declines when the economy is more buoyant. There is evidence to support claims that the popularity of crafts in general experienced rise and fall throughout the 20th century correlating with times of austerity during economic downturns, thus suggesting that crafts were still largely taken up then as a necessity which could be contested. This paper reports briefly on the reasons behind the rise and fall of the hand knitting craft’s popularity throughout the last century in the UK before focusing on the latter decades in order to expose the factors related to the more serious decline of the craft in the 1990s. It discloses the perceptions of the craft at the end of the century and provides the foundation for the next stage of the research project which will involve an investigation of the craft in the early decades of the twentieth-first century. The paper draws predominantly on company and trade reports such as Keynote and Mintel and on previously unpublished survey materials from the late 1990s that were designed to explore the state of the hand knit craft at the close of the twentieth century.

      • Coach education or coach development

        In the past decade interest in sports coaching has intensified. Lyle (2002) attributes this to improved career opportunities in coaching, increased provision of coach education and access to coaching studies in tertiary institutions. A number of countries have heavily invested in the provision of coach education often framed by elaborate national coaching strategies (e.g., The New Zealand Coaching Strategy, and Coaching Ireland and Coaching Strategy), certificates (e.g., United Kingdom Coaching Certificate), programmes (e.g., Canada's National Coaching Certificate Programme) and qualification frameworks (e.g., Australia's National Coaching Accreditation Scheme). Other countries like Korea are in the throes of reworking existing national coach development systems. Not only are national organisations investing in coach education but multinational organisations are also working together with the aim of improving the provision of coach education. For example in 2007 the European Coaching Council (representing 27 member states of the EU) and the International Council for Coach Education agreed upon 'key reference points for the development of coaching competence and qualifications up to 2011' (http://www.sportscoachuk.org/News). The purpose of this paper is to explore whether a paradigm shift is reflected in the development of a contemporary coach education initiative. In this presentation I report on a case study that explored the development of the coach education framework associated with The New Zealand Coaching Strategy (2006). Two methods were used to analyse whether a paradigm shift was reflected in the development of coach education framework. First, an examination of the language used in the framework document was conducted which was followed by an interview with a key player involved the development of the coach education framework. The findings of the case study suggest that there has been a subtle paradigm shift in some areas of the coach education framework associated with The New Zealand Coaching Strategy (2006).
