In this paper, a self-tuning control system is proposed to automate materials procurement for largeconstruction projects. The system is planned to be a web-based tool to facilitate the sharing of real time information related to stock level, work progress and material ordering. A prototype of the system was developed and tested by threeprocurement cases in a commercial development project producing encouraging results. The system successfully forecasted the material requirement by tuning the batch order to match with the actual required level.
Virtualization-based Radio Access Network Evolution

The recent researches on telecommunication area see the potential for network functions virtualization (NFV) to reduce both capital and operational expenditures (CapEx/OpEx), as well as speed up the time to market for new services. These benefits arise because NFV helps decouple network functions from hardware so they are no longer tied to proprietary hardware, running instead on high-volume, industry-standard server platforms. At the heart of NFV is virtualization technology, which until recently has posed significant challenges to realizing the real-time performance required to support telecom workloads. This paper describes some of the issues equipment developers face in a virtualized environment and explains how they can be overcome. In particular, there is an in-depth analysis showing how a virtualized base station running on a general purpose processor-based platform can meet the 4G network requirements for latency and performance. Some test results and the corresponding observations are described for real-time processing in virtualized environment. We also present the RAN evolution vision based on virtualization technology.

The optimum conditions for FOTS films deposited as vapor self-assembled monolayers for producing a hydrophobic film with low roughness was determined to be 10 Torr and 50℃. The root mean square (RMS) of film roughness was 0.72 nm and its contact angle 108.14°. These conditions are much simpler than the conventional process in which high temperature is known to result in high contact angles and reduced agglomeration of precursor molecules and roughness. However, we found that optimized hydrophobic FOTS film that provides an anti-stiction layer in micro-electro-mechanical systems can be obtained at low temperature and high pressure with a comparable contact angle to and lower roughness than the film obtained using the conventional process.

Grounded on the Resource Based View (RBV) theory, this paper argues that technological advances and process optimisation through standardisation and centralisation could been used to improve various aspects of port operational performance. Using information and secondary data from the case of Patrick Terminals in Australia, the impacts of the Patrick’s Brisbane AutoStradTM container terminal and National Operations Centre (NOC) on yard design and operations, quay crane deployment, operational productivity, safety, manpower, vessel planning, customer service delivery, invoicing, and process alignment and standardisation, were examined. It was found that the deployment of advanced technology i.e. Brisbane AutoStradTM, bundled with the optimisation of business processes through standardisation and centralisation at the NOC, are valuable and costly-to-imitate tangible and intangible resources which can translate into positive operational performance in terms of better equipment and facility utilisation, higher productivity, reduced costs, and more satisfied customers. This research contributes to strengthen the RBV theory in the context of container terminals management while also provides managerial insights to port managers and policy makers not only in Australian container terminals but also those in Asia, given their growth and competitive position on the global basis.
Evaluation of <i>TRAF6</i> in a large multiancestral lupus cohort

<P><B>Abstract</B></P><P><B>Objective</B></P><P>Systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) is a heterogeneous autoimmune disease with significant immune system aberrations resulting from complex heritable genetics as well as environmental factors. We undertook to study the role of <I>TRAF6</I> as a candidate gene for SLE, since it plays a major role in several signaling pathways that are important for immunity and organ development.</P><P><B>Methods</B></P><P>Fifteen single‐nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) across <I>TRAF6</I> were evaluated in 7,490 SLE patients and 6,780 control subjects from different ancestries. Population‐based case–control association analyses and meta‐analyses were performed. <I>P</I> values, false discovery rate q values, and odds ratios (ORs) with 95% confidence intervals (95% CIs) were calculated.</P><P><B>Results</B></P><P>Evidence of associations was detected in multiple SNPs. The best overall <I>P</I> values were obtained for SNPs rs5030437 and rs4755453 (<I>P</I> = 7.85 × 10<SUP>−5</SUP> and <I>P</I> = 4.73 × 10<SUP>−5</SUP>, respectively) without significant heterogeneity among populations (<I>P</I> = 0.67 and <I>P</I> = 0.50, respectively, in Q statistic). In addition, SNP rs540386, which was previously reported to be associated with rheumatoid arthritis (RA), was found to be in linkage disequilibrium with these 2 SNPs (r<SUP>2</SUP> = 0.95) and demonstrated evidence of association with SLE in the same direction (meta‐analysis <I>P</I> = 9.15 × 10<SUP>−4</SUP>, OR 0.89 [95% CI 0.83–0.95]). The presence of thrombocytopenia improved the overall results in different populations (meta‐analysis <I>P</I> = 1.99 × 10<SUP>−6</SUP>, OR 0.57 [95% CI 0.45–0.72], for rs5030470). Finally, evidence of family‐based association in 34 African American pedigrees with the presence of thrombocytopenia was detected in 1 available SNP (rs5030437) with a Z score magnitude of 2.28 (<I>P</I> = 0.02) under a dominant model.</P><P><B>Conclusion</B></P><P>Our data indicate the presence of association of <I>TRAF6</I> with SLE, consistent with the previous report of association with RA. These data provide further support for the involvement of <I>TRAF6</I> in the pathogenesis of autoimmunity.</P>
Cofactor‐Free, Direct Photoactivation of Enoate Reductases for the Asymmetric Reduction of C=C Bonds

<P><B>Abstract</B></P><P>Enoate reductases from the family of old yellow enzymes (OYEs) can catalyze stereoselective <I>trans</I>‐hydrogenation of activated C=C bonds. Their application is limited by the necessity for a continuous supply of redox equivalents such as nicotinamide cofactors [NAD(P)H]. Visible light‐driven activation of OYEs through NAD(P)H‐free, direct transfer of photoexcited electrons from xanthene dyes to the prosthetic flavin moiety is reported. Spectroscopic and electrochemical analyses verified spontaneous association of rose bengal and its derivatives with OYEs. Illumination of a white light‐emitting‐diode triggered photoreduction of OYEs by xanthene dyes, which facilitated the enantioselective reduction of C=C bonds in the absence of NADH. The photoenzymatic conversion of 2‐methylcyclohexenone resulted in enantiopure (<I>ee</I>>99 %) (<I>R</I>)‐2‐methylcyclohexanone with conversion yields as high as 80–90 %. The turnover frequency was significantly affected by the substitution of halogen atoms in xanthene dyes.</P>
