      • A Survey on Smart Meeting Rooms and Open Issues

Carlos Filipe Freitas,João Barroso,Carlos Ramos 보안공학연구지원센터 2015 International Journal of Smart Home Vol.9 No.9

Decision Making is one of the most important activities of the human being. Nowadays decisions imply to consider many different points of view, so decisions are commonly taken by formal or informal groups of persons. Groups exchange ideas or engage in a process of argumentation and counter-argumentation, negotiate, cooperate, collaborate or even discuss techniques and/or methodologies for problem solving. Smart Meeting Rooms (SMR) are the election spaces where groups can perform these activities in a local or distributed setting. SMR definition has evolved and in this article we present its evolution side by side with several projects that have been developed during the last decade. We also present the features and evaluation methods present in literature and we make a discussion on the open issues.

      • Semantic Key Pre-Distribution Protocol For Multi-Phase Wireless Sensor Networks

Carlos Ramos,Zita Maria Almeida do Vale Vol.1 No.1

Gait is a new biometric aimed to recognize a subject by the manner in which they walk. Gait has several advantages over other biometrics, most notably that it is a non-invasive and perceivable at a distance when other biometrics are obscured. We present a new area based metric, called gait masks, which provides statistical data intimately related to the gait of the subject. Early results are promising with a recognition rate of 90% on a small database of human subjects. In addition to this, we show how gait masks can also be used on subjects other than humans to provide information about the gait cycle of the subject. In this paper, we propose a novel temporal template, called Chrono-Gait Image (CGI), to describe the spatio-temporal walking pattern for human identification by gait. The CGI temporal template encodes the temporal information among gait frames via color mapping to improve the recognition performance. Our method starts with the extraction of the contour in each gait image, followed by utilizing a color mapping function to encode each of gait contour images in the same gait sequence and compositing them to a single CGI. We also obtain the CGI-based real templates by generating CGI for each period of one gait sequence and utilize contour distortion to generate the CGI-based synthetic templates. In addition to independent recognition using either of individual templates, we combine the real and synthetic temporal templates for refining the performance of human recognition. Extensive experiments on the USF HumanID database indicate that compared with the recently published gait recognition approaches, our CGI-based approach attains better performance in gait recognition with considerable robustness to gait period detection.

      • Essential Considerations for Penetration test result presentation

Vol.5 No.3

A penetration test is usually performed to uncover technical weaknesses in a computer installation. Consequently, the test results contain technical implications that may not be easily understood unless they are put into context and explained in business terms. When presenting penetration test results to management, the identified information technology risks must be translated into business risks [1]. This research provides a suggestion on how to effectively present penetration test results.

Vol.6 No.4

Purple Corn (Zea mays L.) Phenolic Compounds Profile and Its Assessment as an Agent Against Oxidative Stress in Isolated Mouse Organs

        Fernando Ramos-Escudero,Ana Marı´a Mun˜oz,Carlos Alvarado-Ortı´z,Angel Alvarado,Jaime A. Ya´n˜ez 2012 Journal of medicinal food Vol.15 No.2

This study was designed to determine the contents of total polyphenols, flavonoids, flavonols, flavanols, and anthocyanins of purple corn (Zea mays L.) extracts obtained with different methanol:water concentrations, acidified with 1% HCl (1 N). Another objective was to determine the antioxidant activity by 1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH), 2,20-azinobis(3-ethylbenzothiazoline-6-sulfonic acid) (ABTS), ferric reducing antioxidant power (FRAP), and deoxyribose assay, individual phenolic compounds by high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC), and endogenous antioxidant enzyme (superoxide dismutase [SOD], catalase [CAT], and total peroxidase [TPX]) activity and lipid peroxidation activity (thiobarbituric acid–reactive substances [TBARS] assay) in isolated mouse organs. Overall, the highest total content of polyphenols, anthocyanins, flavonoids, flavonols, and flavanols was obtained with the 80:20 methanol:water extract, acidified with 1% HCl (1 N). The 50%inhibitory concentration values obtained by the DPPH and ABTS assays with this extract were 66.3 lg/mL and 250 lg/mL,respectively. The antioxidant activity by the FRAP assay was 26.1 lM Trolox equivalents/g, whereas the deoxyribose assay presented 93.6% inhibition. Because of these results, the 80:20 methanol:water extract, acidified with 1% HCl (1 N), was used for the remaining tests. Eight phenolic compounds were identified by HPLC: chlorogenic acid, caffeic acid, rutin, ferulic acid, morin, quercetin, naringenin, and kaempferol. Furthermore, it was observed that the purple corn extract was capable of significantly reducing lipid peroxidation (lower malondialdehyde [MDA] concentrations by the TBARS assay) and at the same time increasing endogenous antioxidant enzyme (CAT, TPX, and SOD) activities in isolated mouse kidney, liver, and brain. On the basis of the results, it was concluded that the purple corn extract contained various bioactive phenolic compounds that exhibited considerable in vitro antioxidant activity, which correlated well with the decreased MDA formation and increase in activity of endogenous antioxidant enzymes observed in the isolated mouse organs. This warrants further in vivo studies with purple corn extracts to assess its antioxidant activity and other bioactivities.

Simple Colorimetric Determination of the Free Amino Groups in Water Soluble Chitin Derivatives Using Genipin

        Luz M. Ramos-Ponce,Mireille Vega,Edith Colunga-Urbina,Georgina C. Sandoval-Fabián,Nagamani Balagurusamy,Juan Carlos Contreras-Esquivel,Francisco J. Rodriguez-Gonzalez 한국식품과학회 2010 Food Science and Biotechnology Vol.19 No.3

A colorimetric method for quantitative measurement of free amino groups of water soluble chitin derivatives is described. The method utilizes genipin as a natural and specific reagent for determining the concentration of free amino groups in samples of water soluble chitin derivatives. The blue color adduct (complex) formed during genipin reaction with free amino groups was measured at about 589 nm and Beer-Lambert’s law obeyed over the concentration range of 50 to 300 mg/L. Parameters of analytical conditions were considered and kept constant during the experimental procedure. Highly acetylated water soluble chitin derivatives can be differentiated from water soluble chitosan using this genipin method. The colorimetric method with genipin was proved to be a rapid and efficient technique to determine the free amino groups in water soluble chitin derivatives. This method can also be applied for the detection of the enzymatic activity of chitindeacetylase.

Rapid physicochemical characterization of innovative fucoidan/fructan powders by ATR-FTIR

        Espinosa-Velazquez, Gerardo,Ramos-de-la-Pena, Ana Mayela,Montanez, Julio,Contreras-Esquivel, Juan Carlos 한국식품과학회 2018 Food Science and Biotechnology Vol.27 No.2

Functional food has been highly demanded lately because of its benefits in counteracting diseases. Fucoidan and agave fructan are ingredients that enhance the growth of beneficial bacteria in the gut (prebiotics). This mixture has great potential to develop innovative products but it has never been explored before. Because of fucoidan is more expensive than agave fructan, the innovative proposed mixture is vulnerable to adulteration. This research was aimed to assess the accuracy of Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy with attenuated total reflectance (ATR-FTIR) coupled with chemometrics to identify and predict concentration of both polysaccharides in powder mixtures (0-100%). Absorption bands at 1240-1255 and $836-840cm^{-1}$ were attributed to fucoidan and a strong peak at ${\sim}936cm^{-1}$ confirmed the fructan presence. Peak areas were best fitted into linear models ($R^2_{adj}{\geq}0.92$, $RMSE{\leq}3.54%$). This achievement may be useful to certificate ingredients contained in fucoidan-fructan mixtures, preventing adulteration.

Genomic Instability Decreases in HIV Patient by Complementary Therapy with Rosmarinus officinalis Extracts

        Blanca Patricia Lazalde-Ramos,Ana Lourdes Zamora-Perez,Ayme´e Ileana Ortega-Guerrero,Saira Zulema Quintero-Fraire,Omar Palacios-Lara,Sol Marı´a Quirarte-Baez,Carlos Galaviz-Hernandez,Martha Sosa-Macıa 2020 Journal of medicinal food Vol.23 No.10

Genomic instability is associated with increased oxidative stress in patients with human immunodeficiency virus (HIV). The aim of this study was to determine the effect of intake of methanolic and aqueous extracts of Rosmarinus officinalis on genomic instability in HIV patients. We studied 67 HIV patients under pharmacological treatment with ATRIPLA who were divided into three groups: group 1, patients under ATRIPLA antiretroviral therapy; group 2, patients with ATRIPLA and rosemary aqueous extract (4 g/L per day); and group 3, patients with ATRIPLA and rosemary methanolic extract (400 mg/day). The genomic instability was evaluated through the buccal micronucleus cytome assay. Oral epithelial cells were taken at the beginning and 1 and 4 months later. The groups that received the pharmacological therapy with ATRIPLA and the complementary therapy with R. officinalis extracts showed a decrease in the number of cells with micronuclei and nuclear abnormalities compared with the group that only received ATRIPLA. The complementary therapy with R. officinalis decreased the genomic instability in HIV patients.
