Intramastoid Phosphaturic Mesenchymal Tumor Causing Hypophosphatemic Osteomalacia Detected on 68Ga-DOTATATE PET/CT But Not on 99mTc-Sestamibi and 18F-FDG Scans

Carlo Scognamiglio Renner Araujo,Luciana Parente Costa Seguro,Paulo Schiavom Duarte,Carlos Alberto Buchpiguel,Rosa Maria Rodrigues Pereira 대한핵의학회 2019 핵의학 분자영상 Vol.53 No.6

68Ga-DOTATATE uptake in mesenchymal tumors causing hypophosphatemic osteomalacia has been recently described. Herein, we present a case of 68Ga-DOTATATE uptake in an intramastoid phosphaturic mesenchymal tumor that had not been depicted in previous 99mTc-Sestamibi and 18F-FDG scans. The lesion was surgically removed and the phosphorus level increased to the normal range.

Bone and Calcified Soft Tissue Metastases of Medullary Thyroid Carcinoma Better Characterized on 18F-Fluoride PET/CT than on 68Ga-Dotatate PET/CT

Paulo Schiavom Duarte,Luciana Audi de Castroneves,Heitor Naoki Sado,Marcelo Tatit Sapienza,Ana Amélia Fialho de Oliveira Hoff,Carlos Alberto Buchpiguel 대한핵의학회 2018 핵의학 분자영상 Vol.52 No.4

Herein, we report a case of a 19-year-old man with multiple endocrine neoplasia type 2B (MEN2B) and medullary thyroidcarcinoma (MTC) diagnosed when he was 12 years of age. The patient had previously undergone total thyroidectomy, cervicalradiotherapy, and chemotherapy. He progressed with known bone, pulmonary, and lymph node metastases and was scanned with18F-fluoride (18F-NaF) and 68Ga-dotatate whole-body positron emission tomography/computed tomography (PET/CT) for metastaticdisease monitoring. We found that the MTC bone metastases and soft tissue calcified metastases were better characterizedon 18F-NaF PET/CT than on 68Ga-dotatate PET/CT. This case illustrates that the 18F-NaF PET/CT could be helpful not only tothe detection of bone metastases but also to the detection of calcified soft tissue metastases in patients with MTC.

Improving User Satisfaction in Adaptive Multicast Video

de Amorim, Marcelo Dias,Duarte, Otto Carlos M.B.,Pujolle, Guy The Korea Institute of Information and Commucation 2002 Journal of communications and networks Vol.4 No.3

Adaptability is the most promising feature to be applied in future robust multimedia applications. In this paper, we propose the Direct Algorithm to improve the degree of satisfaction at heterogeneous receivers in multi-layered multicast video environments. The algorithm relies on a mechanism that dynamically controls the rates of the video layers and is based on feedback control packets sent by the receivers. The algorithm also addresses scalability issues by implementing a merging procedure at intermediate nodes in order to avoid packet implosion at the source in the case of large multicast groups. The proposed scheme is optimized to achieve high global video quality and reduced bandwidth requirements. We also propose the Direct Algorithm with a virtual number of layers. The virtual layering scheme induces intermediate nodes to keep extra states of the multicast session, which reduces the video degradation for all the receivers. The results show that the proposed scheme leads to improved global video quality at heterogeneous receivers with no cost of extra bandwidth.

Comparison of 18F-NaF PET/CT with Other Imaging Methods in the Detection of Bone Metastases in Patients with Medullary Thyroid Cancer: a Report of a Series of 31 Cases

        Ueda Cristina Emiko,Duarte Paulo Schiavom,Castroneves Luciana Audi,Coura-Filho George Barbério,Sado Heitor Naoki,Sapienza Marcelo Tatit,Ana Oliveira Hoff,Buchpiguel Carlos Alberto 대한핵의학회 2020 핵의학 분자영상 Vol.54 No.6

Purpose To compare the 18F-NaF PET/CT studies (18F-NaF) with other imaging methods in the detection of skeletal metastases (SM) in patients with medullary thyroid cancer (MTC). Methods We retrospectively analyzed 31 patients with MTC who performed 18F-NaF to assess SM. The results of the 18F-NaF were compared with other imaging methods performed for metastasis detection: 99Tc-MDP bone scan (BS), magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), contrast-enhanced CT (CT), and 68Ga-Dotatate and 18F-FDG PET/CT studies. A qualitative analysis comparing the 18F-NaF findings with the ones of the other methods was performed, and the results were classified as superior (>), equal (=), and inferior (<). Results Eleven patients had no bone metastases detected on any of the imaging methods used. Twenty patients presented SM depicted on 18F-NaF. Of these 20 patients, 12 performed bone scan (in 9 18F-NaF > BS and in 3 18F-NaF = BS), 1 performed 18F-FDG (18F-NaF > 18F-FDG), 4 performed 68Ga-Dotatate (in 2 18F-NaF > 68Ga-Dotatate and in 2 18F-NaF = 68Ga-Dotatate), 20 performed CT of at least one body segment (in 15 18F-NaF = CT and in 5 18F-NaF > CT), and 16 performed MRI of at least one body segment, and in all of them, the 18F-NaF was equal to the MRI. Beside this, the 18F-NaF detected SMin body segments not routinely scanned in MRI and CT. Conclusion In patients with MTC, the 18F-NaF seems to be equal or superior to other imaging modalities in the detection of SM and allows the analysis of the whole skeletal in a single study.

Increased Cytokine and Nitric Oxide Levels in Serum of Dogs Experimentally Infected with Rangelia vitalii

        Francine C. Paim,Aleksandro S. Da Silva,Carlos Breno V. Paim,Raqueli T. Franca,Marcio M. Costa,Marta M. M. F. Duarte,Manuela B. Sangoi,Rafael N. Moresco,Silvia G. Monteiro,Sonia Terezinha A. Lopes 대한기생충학열대의학회 2013 The Korean Journal of Parasitology Vol.51 No.1

This study aimed to measure the levels of interferon-gamma (IFN-γ), tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-α), interleukin 1 (IL-1), interleukin 6 (IL-6), and nitrite/nitrate (NOx) in serum of dogs experimentally infected with Rangelia vitalii. Twelve female mongrel dogs were divided into 2 groups; group A (uninfected controls) composed by healthy dogs (n=5) and group B consisting of dogs inoculated with R. vitalii (n=7). Animals were monitored by blood smear examinations, which showed intraerythrocytic forms of the parasite on day 5 post-infection (PI). Blood samples were collected through the jugular vein on days 0, 10, and 20 PI to determine the serum levels of IFN-γ, TNF-α, IL-1, IL-6, and NOx. Cytokines were assessed by ELISA quantitative sandwich technique, and NOx was measured by the modified Griess method. Cytokine levels (IFN-γ, TNF-α, IL-1, and IL-6) were increased (P<0.01) in serum of infected animals. Serum levels of NOx were also increased on days 10 PI (P<0.01) and 20 PI (P<0.05) in infected animals. Therefore, the infection with R. vitalii causes an increase in proinflammatory cytokines and nitric oxide content. These alterations may be associated with host immune protection against the parasite.

Changes of the Macrobenthos Community with Non-native Mangrove Rehabilitation (Kandelia obovata) and Salt Marsh Invasion (Spartina alterniflora) in Ximen Island, Zhejiang, China

        Qiuxuan Wang,Li Song,Susana Agusti,Carlos Duarte,George Christakos,Jiaping Wu 한국해양과학기술원 2021 Ocean science journal Vol.56 No.4

Macrobenthos organisms are vital ecological components of intertidal wetlands. This work studied effects of non-native mangrove rehabilitation (Kandelia obovata) and salt marsh invasion (Spartina alterniflora) on macrobenthos communities in Ximen Island (Zhejiang, China). The macrobenthos communities were compared between rehabilitated K. obovata forests of five different stand ages (2-, 8-, 11-, 16-, and 60-year-old) and adjacent S. alterniflora marsh and non-vegetated mudflat. Compared to the mudflat, S. alterniflora increased the abundance, Shannon-Wiener diversity index (H'), and Margalef's richness index (d') of macrobenthos. Gastropoda abundance was high in the S. alterniflora marsh, whereas, malacostraca biomass was low. Within mangrove forests, macrobenthos abundance was positively correlated with the stand age of mangroves (Spearman Correlation, P < 0.05), but the corresponding H', d' and Pielou's evenness index (J') showed negative correlations. Gastropoda dominated over macrobenthos in the younger stands (2-11 years in age), whereas, phascolosomatidea and bivalvia were more abundant in the older stands (16 and 60 years in age). Noticeably, the highest biomass for malacostraca was recorded from the 11-year-old stand. Macrobenthos communities differed among habitats, with the divergence in community structure between the S. alterniflora marsh and mangrove stands increasing with mangrove stand age, to be significantly different for stands planted over 16 years ago. Since the 16-year-old stand exhibited similar macrobenthos features to the 60-year-old stand, we speculated that, in the case of macrobenthos, a rehabilitated K. obovata forest can reach its maturity level at a time period of about 15 years in Ximen Island.

Effectiveness and safety of rotary and reciprocating kinematics for retreatment of curved root canals: a systematic review of in vitro studies

Simões Lucas Pinho,Reis-Prado Alexandre Henrique dos,Bueno Carlos Roberto Emerenciano,Viana Ana Cecília Diniz,Duarte Marco Antônio Húngaro,Cintra Luciano Tavares Angelo,Lemos Cleidiel Aparecido Araújo 대한치과보존학회 2022 Restorative Dentistry & Endodontics Vol.47 No.2

Objectives This systematic review (register-osf.io/wg7ba) compared the efficacy and safety of rotary and reciprocating kinematics in the removal of filling material from curved root canals. Materials and Methods Only in vitro studies evaluating both kinematics during retreatment were included. A systematic search (PubMed/MEDLINE, Scopus, and other databases, until January 2021), data extraction, and risk of bias analysis (Joanna Briggs Institute checklist) were performed. Efficacy in filling removal was the primary outcome. Results The search resulted in 2,795 studies, of which 15 were included. Efficacy was measured in terms of the remaining filling material and the time required for this. Nine studies evaluated filling material removal, of which 7 found no significant differences between rotary and reciprocating kinematics. Regarding the time for filling removal, 5 studies showed no difference between both kinematics, 2 studies showed faster results with rotary systems, and other 2 showed the opposite. No significant differences were found in apical transportation, centering ability, instrument failure, dentin removed and extruded debris. A low risk of bias was observed. Conclusions This review suggests that the choice of rotary or reciprocating kinematics does not influence the efficacy of filling removal from curved root canals. Further studies are needed to compare the kinematics safety in curved root canals. Comparative analysis of torsional and cyclic fatigue resistance of ProGlider, WaveOne Gold Glider, and TruNatomy Glider in simulated curved canal

Dias Pedro de Souza,Kato Augusto Shoji,Bueno Carlos Eduardo da Silveira,Vivan Rodrigo Ricci,Duarte Marco Antonio Hungaro,Calefi Pedro Henrique Souza,Pelegrine Rina Andréa 대한치과보존학회 2023 Restorative Dentistry & Endodontics Vol.48 No.1

Objectives This study aimed to compare the torsional and cyclic fatigue resistance of ProGlider (PG), WaveOne Gold Glider (WGG), and TruNatomy Glider (TNG). Materials and Methods A total of 15 instruments of each glide path system (n = 15) were used for each test. A custom-made device simulating an angle of 90° and a radius of 5 millimeters was used to assess cyclic fatigue resistance, with calculation of number of cycles to failure. Torsional fatigue resistance was assessed by maximum torque and angle of rotation. Fractured instruments were examined by scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Data were analyzed with Shapiro-Wilk and Kruskal-Wallis tests, and the significance level was set at 5%. Results The WGG group showed greater cyclic fatigue resistance than the PG and TNG groups (p < 0.05). In the torsional fatigue test, the TNG group showed a higher angle of rotation, followed by the PG and WGG groups (p < 0.05). The TNG group was superior to the PG group in torsional resistance (p < 0.05). SEM analysis revealed ductile morphology, typical of the 2 fracture modes: cyclic fatigue and torsional fatigue. Conclusions Reciprocating WGG instruments showed greater cyclic fatigue resistance, while TNG instruments were better in torsional fatigue resistance. The significance of these findings lies in the identification of the instruments’ clinical applicability to guide the choice of the most appropriate instrument and enable the clinician to provide a more predictable glide path preparation.

Cellular responses to 3D-printed dental resins produced using a manufacturer recommended printer versus a third party printer

Beatriz Sona Cardoso,Mariana Brito da Cruz,Joana Faria Marques,João Carlos Roque,João Paulo Martins,Rodrigo Cordeiro Malheiro,António Duarte da Mata 대한치과보철학회 2024 The Journal of Advanced Prosthodontics Vol.16 No.2

Purpose. The aim of this study was to evaluate the influence of different 3D dental resins, using a manufacturer recommended printer and a third-party printer, on cellular responses of human gingival cells. Materials and Methods. Three NextDent resins (Denture 3D+, C&B MFH and Crowntec) were used to produce specimens on printers NextDent 5100 (groups ND, NC and NT, respectively) and Phrozen Sonic Mini 4K (groups PD, PC and PT, respectively). Human gingival fibroblasts were cultured and biocompatibility was evaluated on days 1, 3 and 7. IL-6 and IL-8 concentrations were evaluated at 3 days using ELISA. Surface roughness was evaluated by a contact profilometer. SEM and fluorescence micrographs were analyzed at days 1 and 7. Statistical analyses were performed using SPSS and mean differences were tested using ANOVA and post-hoc Tukey tests (P < .05). Results. There was an increase in cellular viability after 7 days in groups PC and PT, when compared to group PD. ND group resulted in higher concentration of IL-6 when compared to PT group. SEM and fluorescence micrographs showed less adhesion and thinner morphology of fibroblasts from group PD. No significant differences were found regarding surface roughness. Conclusion. The use of different printers or resins did not seem to influence surface roughness. NextDent 5100 and Phrozen Sonic Mini 4K produced resins with similar cellular responses in human gingival fibroblasts. However, Denture 3D+ resin resulted in significantly lower biocompatibility, when compared to C&B MFH and Crowntec resins. Further testing is required to support its long-term use, required for complete dentures.
