Seismic analysis of arch dams including dam-reservoir interaction via a continuum damage model
Karaton, M.,Calayir, Y.,Bayraktar, A. Techno-Press 2006 Structural Engineering and Mechanics, An Int'l Jou Vol.22 No.3
In this study, the earthquake damage response of the concrete arch dams was investigated including dam-reservoir interaction. A continuum damage model which is a second-order tensor and includes the strain softening behavior was selected for the concrete material. Fluid-structure interaction problem was modeled by Lagrangian approach. Sommerfeld radiation condition was applied to the truncated boundary of reservoir. The improved form of the HHT-${\alpha}$ time integration algorithm was used in the solution of the equations of motion. The arch dam Type 5 was selected for numerical application. For the dynamic input, acceleration records of the 10 December 1967 Koyna earthquake were chosen. These records were scaled with earthquake acceleration scale factor (EASF) and then used in the analyses. Solutions were obtained for empty and full reservoir cases. The effects of EASF and damping ratio on the response of the dam were studied.
Construction failures of masonry and adobe buildings during the 2011 Van earthquakes in Turkey
Sayin, Erkut,Yon, Burak,Calayir, Yusuf,Gor, Mesut Techno-Press 2014 Structural Engineering and Mechanics, An Int'l Jou Vol.51 No.3
On October 23, 2011, an earthquake of magnitude 7.0 struck Van, Turkey. This powerful earthquake caused the deaths of 604 people, more than 2,000 injuries, and a considerable loss of property. After this devastating earthquake, on November 9, 2011, another earthquake of magnitude 5.7 occurred. This moderate earthquake caused the deaths of 40 people. Partial and total collapse of the masonry and adobe buildings occurred in the rural areas of Van. In this paper, the acceleration records and response spectrums of the earthquakes were given and the structural deficiencies and reasons of the failures of the rural buildings were evaluated according to the Turkish Seismic Code. The observed failures showed that low quality of structural materials, poor workmanship, lack of engineering services and insufficient detailing of the structural elements are the main reasons of damages.
Water Length and Height Effects on the Earthquake Behavior of Arch Dam-Reservoir-Foundation Systems

In this study, water length and height effects on the earthquake behavior of arch dam-reservoir-foundation systems are purposed. The study can be classified into two parts. In the first part, in order to obtain a realistic 3D arch dam-reservoir-foundation model, water length effects on the behavior of the arch dam systems are investigated. For this purpose a double curvature arch dam is modeled by forming four different water lengths related to dam Height (H) as H, 2H, 3H and 4H. Each model is analyzed in time domain and the realistic model is obtained according to the analyses results. In the second part, water height effects on the behavior of the arch dam system are investigated. The arch dam obtained from first part of the study is modeled by forming four different water heights related to dam Height (H) as 0H, 0.33H, 0.66H and H. The behavior of the dam, reservoir and foundation are expressed in terms of displacements using Lagrangian approach. The foundation is taken into account as massless; behavior of reservoir is assumed to be linearly elastic, inviscid and irrotational. In this study, all systems are modeled by ANSYS finite element program and analyses are performed using IMPVALL/I-ELC180 component of Imperial Valley (1940) earthquake. Dynamic equations of motions are solved by using Newmark integration algorithm. It is seen that both water length and height affect the earthquake behavior of the arch dams considerably.
