      • A PHOTOMETRIC AND SPECTROGRAPHIC STUDY OF SX PHOENICIS

        Simultaneous photometric (uvbyβ) and spectrographic observation of SX Phe are described. Analysis of the light and velocity frequency spectra are performed. It is shown that all frequencies detected are harmonics or combinations of the fundamental and first harmonic frequencies. Intrinsic (b-y) and c_1 values used in conjunction with a model-atmosphere grid appropriate for a star with [M/H]=-1.0 yields <T_eff> = 7630 K and <log g> = 3.90. Standard evolutionary models indicate the mass is 1.13 ?? and <M_v> value is ± 2.9. The radial-velocity data indicate a mean radial velocity of -37 km/s and a total range of 38 km/s.

        The BRAHMS Experiment at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider

        The BRAHMS probes the hot and dense nuclear matter at the RHIC which has reached its design energy of psNN = 200 GeV for Au + Au collisions. The BRAHMS uses magnetic spectrometers for hadrons covering a large phase space 0 < y < 4 with good particle identification and momentum resolution. A comprehensive investigation of multiplicity distributions of emitted charged particles is carried out. Ratios of yields of antiparticles to particles are also measured as a function of rapidity. Rapidity dependent net-proton yield indicates that substantial transparency has been achieved in these collisions. Transverse momentum spectra of charged hadrons are measured up to 5 GeV/c which indicates a significant medium eect when compared to nucleon + nucleon reference spectra.

        Comparing Outcomes of Bicruciate-Stabilized and Cruciate-Retaining Total Knee Arthroplasty

        Background: Bicruciate-stabilized (BCS) total knee arthroplasty (TKA) aims to restore normal kinematics by replicating the function of both cruciate ligaments. Conventional cruciate-retaining (CR) design in TKA has shown previous clinical success with lower complication rates. This study compared the patient-reported outcomes between the BCS and CR TKA designs. Methods: This retrospective study examined patients who underwent primary TKA using a CR or a BCS implant. Patient demographics, Knee Injury and Osteoarthritis Outcome Score for Joint Replacement (KOOS, JR), and Forgotten Joint Score (FJS) were compared between two cohorts. Patient-reported outcome measures were analyzed using independent samples t -tests. Results: There were no significant preoperative demographic differences between groups. The CR cohort (n = 756) had significantly higher average KOOS, JR Scores compared to the BCS cohort (n = 652) at 3 months (59.7 ± 3.8 vs. 53.0 ± 3.9, p < 0.001) and 2 years (62.6 ± 8.0 vs. 53.8 ± 6.7, p = 0.001) after TKA. Within the cohort, KOOS, JR delta differences were not significant for CR when comparing patient scores 3 months to 1 year after surgery. Meanwhile, the BCS patients did show significant delta improvement (4.1 ± 1.9, p = 0.030) when compared 3 months to 1 year after surgery. One year postoperatively, the BCS cohort (n = 134) showed a significantly higher average FJS score (49.5 ± 31.4, vs. 36.8 ± 28.5, p = 0.028) than the CR cohort (n = 203). Both cohorts displayed a significant difference in delta improvements within their respective cohort when measuring FJS from 3 months to 1 year, 2 years, and 3 years after surgery. Conclusions: The CR cohort performed better on average, compared to the BCS cohort in measures of KOOS, JR scores at the 2-year follow-up. The BCS cohort performed marginally better regarding FJS only at 1-year follow-up.

        Does <i>Kepler</i> unveil the mystery of the Blazhko effect? First detection of period doubling in <i>Kepler</i> Blazhko RR Lyrae stars

        <P><B>ABSTRACT</B></P><P>The first detection of the period doubling phenomenon is reported in the <I>Kepler</I> RR Lyrae stars RR Lyr, V808 Cyg and V355 Lyr. Interestingly, all these pulsating stars show Blazhko modulation. The period doubling manifests itself as alternating maxima and minima of the pulsational cycles in the light curve, as well as through the appearance of half‐integer frequencies located halfway between the main pulsation period and its harmonics in the frequency spectrum. The effect was found to be stronger during certain phases of the modulation cycle. We were able to reproduce the period‐doubling bifurcation in our non‐linear RR Lyrae models computed by the Florida–Budapest hydrocode. This enabled us to trace the origin of this instability in RR Lyrae stars to a resonance, namely a 9:2 resonance between the fundamental mode and a high‐order (ninth) radial overtone showing strange‐mode characteristics. We discuss the connection of this new type of variation to the mysterious Blazhko effect and argue that it may give us fresh insights into solving this century‐old enigma.</P>
