      • Citizen participation in public administration : an analysis of efficiency of three popular councils in Sao Paulo city, Brazil

Brito, Eder Dos Santos Graduate School of Policy Studies, Korea Universit 2012 국내석사

        RANK : 247359

The thesis created the PPEI – Popular Participation Efficiency Index - in order to analyze three Popular Councils in Sao Paulo´s City Hall Structure: Popular Council for Housing, Popular Council for Tourism and Popular Council for Environment and Sustainable Development. The index analyzed three dimensions of citizen´s participation in public administration: popular representativeness, popular participation outputs and political independence. Together with an theoretical framework that reunite concepts of democracy, citizenship, history and concepts of popular participation in the Government, the analysis presents good findings about popular representativeness, but unsatisfied levels of political independence and popular participation outputs. The thesis is also presenting four cases of different approaches in citizen´s participation, in different parts of the World, in order to create good examples and policy recommendations for Sao Paulo´s future decisions about citizen´s involvement in the Public Administration decision-making processes.

      • Factors affecting rural community participation in community development projects driven by Babahoyo technical university : case on San Juan, Ecuador

Brito, Yahaira Lisbeth Moreno Graduate School of Government, Business and Entrep 2022 국내석사

        RANK : 247359

Community participation is commonly deemed as pivotal in the project success. It is normally seen as a way of ensuring project effectiveness, but less attention has been directed to identifying what kind of factors are affecting or related in the San Juan villager’s participation. This research aims to identify the main features affecting participation rates in community development projects driven by Babahoyo Technical University in Ecuador. The theoretical constructs supported in diverse studies about community participation addressed 19 variables gathered in four groups: socio-demographic features, university management, sociocultural perspective, and community capacity. The questionnaire included 56 questions on liker scale and seven categorical (control variables). After the reliability and validity test, only 44 measurement variables grouped in 11 latent variables and seven control variables were included in the final analysis. Overall, findings show that determinant factors in community participation in CDP driven by Babahoyo University are gender, education level, home-distance, community cooperation, and policy knowledge. Reported outcomes demonstrate that San Juan community participation in CDP directly relates to socio-demographic factors. Additionally, Community capacity factors outcomes are more often associated with increased community participation. That suggests that community participation is a complex process strongly influenced by San Juan villager features and their capacity to face community development issues. To draw out a better understanding of community participation, more robustly designed studies include different project design stages and not only the implementation stage.

      • Estimation of evapotranspiration using different methods in Las Abras, Chimborazo, Ecuador

Brito, Noboa Jessica Sungkyunkwan university 2020 국내석사

        RANK : 247359

Evapotranspiration is one of the main issues within the hydrological cycle. At present, the analysis of water basins is very important to have adequate information for any type of study or project. In this investigation, the micro basin of the Guano river, part of Las Abras- area of Chimborazo, will be analyzed, with the main objective of estimating Evapotranspiration values using Penman Monteinth and Thornthwaite for the years 1990-1998. Will be analyzed 6 Meteorological stations located in the analysis area. For the calculation of the reference Evapotranspiration, the Cropwat 8.0 tool delivered by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations will be used, while for the Potential Evapotranspiration the calculation tool will be used with the Tornthwaite method delivered United States Geological Survey (USGS), with the name of Water-Balance Model Driven by a Graphical User Interface. In the end, with the results obtained, the study aims to identify results for each year of analysis and provide a tool so that in the future it can be possible to further investigate certain issues in our countries. The comparison of the Evapotranspiration values calculated using various methods gives us the opportunity to analyze the existing gaps and differences between the processes used, so that the gaps are verified and the similarities between results are recognized. The applications facilitate the calculation, currently the use of programs that save us time and give us real results. That is why in this document several programs are used for the analysis of results.

This dissertation is about the dynamics between systemic educational reform and teachers' efforts to improve classroom practices. It examines teachers' responsibility in the context of school change by focusing on how teachers interpret, adapt, and transform practice to make it relevant both to teaching and to the reality of learning in classrooms. Relying on case study methodologies this research aims at providing interpretation for policy implementation differentials among school teachers trying to improve the quality of municipal schools in Belo Horizonte, Brazil, the third largest city in the country. For example, using elementary school teachers as the unit of analysis, this study reveals that successful implementation may be attributed to teachers' commitment to the task at hand, a strong desire to take charge of their learning, and a self-imposed ethos of collaboration and participation. By taking a close look at the creative ways teachers reach out to their learning communities in search of solutions for classroom problems, this study expands the notion of teacher agency in educational reform in two significant ways: first, it recasts the agency of school teachers in a wider network of practice that is embedded in the practitioner's desire to change curriculum and pedagogy. By doing this, it re-conceptualizes human agency by pushing its boundaries beyond the confines of politics. Second, it defines the plasticity and the limits that agency imposes on the ability and the skills of teachers to undertake the challenge of school reform by transforming themselves and improving the realities of teaching and learning.

Non-Hispanic students are more likely to be successful in their nursing school studies than Hispanic students. Facilitators and barriers to classroom success for Hispanic students has been studied; however, few studies have addressed the academic clinical experience and the clinical instructor’s role in Hispanic students’ success. The purpose of this descriptive phenomenological study was to explore the perspectives of undergraduate senior Hispanic nursing students regarding how student-instructor interactions in the clinical setting influenced students’ ability to learn and succeed in completing their studies. The research questions were guided by an adapted institutional support model and were used to explore how nursing students perceived the influence of their relationship with the clinical instructor. Purposive sampling was used to recruit 12 senior Hispanic nursing students enrolled in a clinical rotation. Individual interviews were conducted, audio-recorded, and transcribed verbatim. Content analysis was completed using Braun and Clarke’s thematic 6-step analysis. Overarching themes identified include faculty characteristics, teaching and learning opportunities, student and faculty interpersonal relationships, and individual self-ownership factors. Findings revealed that clinical nursing faculty characteristics and positive interactions in the learning environment affected Hispanic students’ ability to learn. This study provided faculty with insights on Hispanic nursing students’ perception of the factors that can promote learning in nursing schools. These factors may ultimately improve student retention and graduation among Hispanic nursing students.

This dissertation research investigates the relationship between language and identity in the neighborhood of City of God (Cidade de Deus) in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. More specifically, it employs a mixed-methods approach to analyze the interrelationship between sociolinguistic variation in postvocalic /s/, a phonological variable, and identity construction across groups of speakers and within the speech of individual speakers. Thus, this research analyzes quantitatively the relationship among the four variants of the dependent variable (palatal, alveolar, glottal, and /s/ deletion) and twelve independent variables or predictors, of which six are linguistic (preceding vowel, following sound, stress, syllabic structure, grammatical category, and word) and six are social (age, gender, race/color, regional origin, education, speaker), in a data set composed of seventeen sociolinguistic interviews with twenty-two residents of City of God. Additionally, it examines qualitatively how the social meanings indexed by the use of this variable relate to the stances taken by individual speakers in conversation about the status of their community within the residential organization of Rio de Janeiro, focusing on different conceptions of the words comunidade 'community' and favela (roughly, slum or shantytown). The quantitative results showed that the palatal variant is significantly affected by speakers' regional origin, age, and education. The alveolar is significantly affected by the origin and age of the speaker. The glottal is significantly affected by both age and race/color. Finally, all social variables, except race/color, significantly affect /s/ deletion. The qualitative analysis revealed that the meanings of the variants of postvocalic /s/ varied based on speakers' orientations toward the neighborhood and the stances they took in relation to different perceptions regarding the words comunidade 'community' and favela.. This study contributes to the field of sociolinguistics by using a mixed-methods approach to provide the first study to date that examines how postvocalic /s/ is used by residents of a community that is defined as a favela in Rio de Janeiro, and by including socio-cultural aspects such as race/color and regional origin which have not yet been addressed in studies of this feature in Brazilian Portuguese.

In the face of danger, animals must quickly detect and process environmental stimuli to produce appropriate behavioral responses. Moreover, internal states both tune animal behavior and change in response to external stimuli. These behavioral states are dynamic and permit animals to efficiently transition between behaviors that are appropriate to any given situation. For example, when an animal is presented with an unexpected threat, the animal may quickly switch from an offline, quiescent state to an aroused, hypervigilant state - this transition is necessary for the survival of the animal. However, excessive hypervigilance can be maladaptive and is a common diagnostic marker of various human mental illnesses. The septohippocampal system, composed of the septum and the hippocampus, has previously been implicated in regulating behavioral responses to external sensory stimuli and in modulating affective components of behavior. Yet little is understood on how the septohippocampal system integrates threat-related sensory information to guide appropriate defensive behaviors. In this work, we leverage a subpopulation of Lateral Septum (LS) neurons labeled by the type 2 corticotropin-releasing hormone receptor (LSCrhr2) as a genetic entry point into the septohippocampal system. Here, we demonstrate that 1) LSCrhr2 neurons bidirectionally modulate stimulus-evoked defensive behaviors, 2) LSCrhr2 neurons promote physiological changes in arousal and 3) LSCrhr2 neurons are polysynaptically connected with higher-order cortical brain regions. Additionally, we find evidence that upstream hippocampal projection neurons correlate with physiological arousal and partially respond to threat-related sensory stimuli. These data place the septohippocampal system as a node that controls stimulus-evoked defensive behaviors potentially through its indirect connectivity with the cortex.
