Air Pressure Regulation in Air Bladders of Ascophyllum nodosum(Fucales, Phaeophyceae)

        강은주,Brackenbury, Angela M.,Kang, Eun-Ju,Garbary, David J. 한국조류학회(藻類) 2006 ALGAE Vol.21 No.2

Diurnal and age-related changes in air pressure were measured in air bladders of Ascophyllum nodosum from the Atlantic coast of Nova Scotia. Exterior and interior bladder volumes vary significantly with 4 and 6 y bladders being about 40% larger than 2 y bladders (p < 0.01). Freshly collected bladders yielded a mean pressure of 40.8 ± 6.5 cm H2O. Overnight (20 h) dark treatment at 15°C generated pressure reductions by 80% in 2 y bladders but only by about 30% in 4 and 6 y bladders. Furthermore, in 2 y bladders 8 out of 11 bladders were reduced to atmospheric pressure. Pressure losses were inversely related to pressure recovery after 2.5 h in natural daylight, but after 5 h in daylight there was no significant difference in pressure within the age groups. Even under 25% of full illumination, bladders inflated to full pressure after 5 h. The results show that differences in bladder age and bladder wall thickness have roles in diurnal patterns of bladder inflation and deflation. These results confirm that bladder inflation is based on photosynthetic O2 production and not on partial pressures of O2 in the surrounding medium as was suggested for Sargassum. Chemical analyses of fluid recovered after the interior of bladders were washed with saline showed no evidence for the occurrence of surfactant that might be responsible for maintaining the air-liquid interface.

      • Teaching shape bias to increase the expressive vocabularies of late talkers

Hannah Niese,Tim Brackenbury 한국언어재활사협회 2020 Clinical Archives of Communication Disorders Vol.5 No.2

Purpose: Shape bias is a lexical principle that suggests shape is the primary feature by which concrete noun labels apply to other objects. It helps children generalize the labels of newly encountered words to other referents. Shape bias typically develops around two years of age and has been linked with increases in expressive vocabulary. Smith et al. [1], for example, found significant increases in 17-month-olds’ noun vocabularies following an intervention that taught shape bias. Methods: The present investigation, a non-randomized pilot study, applied an eight-week shape bias-based intervention to Late Talkers who were between the ages of 23 and 34 months. The eight participants were exposed to novel objects, associated nonsense spoken labels, and objects that did and did not match their shape. Pre- and post-treatment expressive vocabularies were measured using the MacArthur-Bates Communicative Development Inventory [2]. Results: The participants increased their expressive vocabularies by 24 to 119 words, adding more new nouns than other word types. Conclusions: These results, along with lessons learned about implementing the treatment, support larger-scale research on teaching shape bias to positively influence the expressive vocabularies of Late Talkers.

      • Design and Implementation of an Energy Efficient, Parallel, Asynchronous DSP

        W. Suntiamorntut,L.E.M. Brackenbury,Jim Garside 대한전자공학회 2007 ITC-CSCC :International Technical Conference on Ci Vol.2007 No.7

Energy efficient computing in a DSP has become an important research issue in order to have a longer battery operating time to support the modern portable devices. The energy efficient functional unit has been designed and implemented for an in-house asynchornous DSP named, Configurable Asynchronous DSP for Reduced Energy (CADRE). CADRE-successor (CADRE-s) has been implemented as a full custom design and simulations are presented to successfully demonstrate the energy-efficiency of the FU. The results show that the FU designed can achieve an energy improvement by a factor of 5 in the multiply accumulator units and a factor of nearly 2 for the overall system compared with the original CADRE system. This demonstrates the importance that energy efficient logic, circuit and layout techniques contribute to a design.
