With the aim to increase blade loadings and stable operating range in highly loaded compressors, this article has been conducted to explore, through a numerical parametric study, the potential of passive control using slotted bladings in cascade configurations. The objective of this numerical investigation is to analyze the influence of location, width and slope of the slots and therefore identify the optimal configuration. The approach is based on two dimensional cascade geometry, low speed regime, steady state and turbulent RANS model. The results show the efficiency of this passive technique to delay separation and enhance aerodynamic performances of the compressor cascade. A maximum of 28.3% reduction in loss coefficient have been reached, the flow turning is increased with approximately $5^0$ and high loading over a wide range of angle of attack have been obtained for the optimized control parameter.

The present study is devoted to the influence of a superposed radial inflow in a rotor-stator cavity with a peripheral opening. The flow regime is turbulent, the two boundary layers being separated by a core region. An original theoretical solution is obtained for the core region, explaining the reason why a weak radial inflow has no major influence near the periphery of the cavity but strongly affects the flow behavior near the axis. The validity of the theory is tested with the help of a new set of experimental data including the radial and tangential mean velocity components, as well as three components of the Reynolds stress tensor measured by hot-wire anemometry. The theoretical results are also in good agreement with numerical results obtained with the Fluent code and experimental data from the literature.

A two-phase liquid pumping test ring is built to study the flow induced characteristics of centrifugal pump under the air-water flow working condition. Pump performances are measured under different flow rates and different inlet air void fraction (a). Pressure pulsation signal spectrums and their probability density maps are also recorded. The calculations, using URANS k-epsilon turbulence model combined with the Euler-Euler inhomogeneous two-phase model, are also performed to obtain inner flow structure inside the impeller and volute channels under different air-water conditions in order to understand the pump characteristic evolutions. The results show that the performance of centrifugal pump is more sensitive to air inlet injection at low flow rates. The maximum air void fraction of model pump could reach 10% when the pump operates at the highest efficiency point, and the performance drops sharply when the air void fraction is more than 8%. The dominant frequency of pump outlet pressure pulsation is still at the blade passing frequency even under two-phase condition. Frequency amplitude increases with the increase of a. The greater the a, the more of low frequency appears in broadband characteristics. With the increase of a, the probability density amplitude of pressure pulsation decreases gradually, and its span becomes gradually wider as well. Comparisons between numerical local results and experimental unsteady pressure can explain part of the phenomena that are found in the present paper.
Leakage Flow Influence on SHF pump model performances
Dupont, Patrick,Bayeul-Laine, Annie-Claude,Dazin, Antoine,Bois, Gerard,Roussette, Olivier,Si, Qiaorui Korean Society for Fluid machinery 2015 International journal of fluid machinery and syste Vol.8 No.3
This paper deals with the influence of leakage flow existing in SHF pump model on the analysis of internal flow behaviour inside the vane diffuser of the pump model performance using both experiments and calculations. PIV measurements have been performed at different hub to shroud planes inside one diffuser channel passage for a given speed of rotation and various flow rates. For each operating condition, the PIV measurements have been trigged with different angular impeller positions. The performances and the static pressure rise of the diffuser were also measured using a three-hole probe. The numerical simulations were carried out with Star CCM+ 9.06 code (RANS frozen and unsteady calculations). Some results were already presented at the XXth IAHR Symposium for three flowrates for RANS frozen and URANS calculations. In the present paper, comparisons between URANS calculations with and without leakages and experimental results are presented and discussed for these flow rates. The performances of the diffuser obtained by numerical calculations are compared to those obtained by the three-holes probe measurements. The comparisons show the influence of fluid leakages on global performances and a real improvement concerning the efficiency of the diffuser, the pump and the velocity distributions. These results show that leakage is an important parameter that has to be taken into account in order to make improved comparisons between numerical approaches and experiments in such a specific model set up.

We performed 24-hr monitoring of pulse oximetric saturation (SpO2) with ECG and sixminute walk test (6MWT) in 19 patients with fibrotic interstitial lung diseases (ILD) to investigate; 1) The frequency and severity of hypoxemia and dysrhythmia during daily activities and 6MWT, 2) safety of 6MWT, and 3) the parameters of 6MWT which can replace 24-hr continuous monitoring of SpO2 to predict hypoxemia during daily activities. All patients experienced waking hour hypoxemia, and eight of nineteen patients spent > 10% of waking hours in hypoxemic state. Most patients experienced frequent arrhythmia, mostly atrial premature contractions (APCs) and ventricular premature contractions (VPCs). There were significant correlation between the variables of 6MWT and hypoxemia during daily activities. All of the patients who desaturated below 80% before 300 meters spent more than 10% of waking hour in hypoxemia (P = 0.018). In contrast to waking hour hypoxemia, SpO2 did not drop significantly during sleep except in the patients whose daytime resting SpO2 was already low. In conclusion, patients with fibrotic ILD showed significant period of hypoxemia during daily activities and frequent VPCs and APCs. Six-minute walk test is a useful surrogate marker of waking hour hypoxemia and seems to be safe without continuous monitoring of SpO2.

Microstructure-Properties Relationships of Ti-6Al-4V Parts Fabricated by Selective Laser Melting

This work investigates the relationships between the static mechanical properties of Ti-6Al-4V manufactured through selective laser melting (SLM) and post-process heat treatments, namely stress relieve, annealing and hot isostatic pressing (HIP). In particular, Ti-6Al-4V parts were fabricated in three different build orientations of X, Z, and 45o to investigate the multi-directional mechanical properties. The results showed that fully densified Ti-6Al-4V parts with densities of up to 99.5% were obtained with optimized SLM parameters. The microstructure of stress relieved and mill annealed samples was dominated by fine α′ martensitic needles. After HIP treatment, the martensite structure was fully transformed into α and β phases (α+β lamellar). Within the realm of tensile properties, the yield and ultimate strength values were found statistically similar with respect to the built orientation for a given heat treatment. However, the ductility was found orientation dependent for the HIP samples, where a lower value was observed for samples built in the X direction.
