Semiconducting Behavior in the Polymeric Zintl Phase Material $K_2Ga_2Sb_4$
Wu, Biao,Birdwhistell, Teresa L.T.,Jun, Moo-Jin,O'Connor, Charles J. Korean Chemical Society 1990 Bulletin of the Korean Chemical Society Vol.11 No.5
A ternary Zintl phase material of the formula $K_2Ga_2Sb_4$ has been prepared directly from reaction of the elements following a high temperature procedure. The compound consists of potassium ions and planar ribbons of $(Ga_2Sb_4^{-2})_{\infty}$ consisting of five membered $[Ga_2Sb_3]$ rings bridged by Sb atoms. The variable temperature specific resistivity measurements show the material to be an intrinsic semiconductor.

In order to adapt to different environments, Vibrio parahaemolyticus employed a complicated quorum sensing system to orchestrate gene expression and diverse colony morphology patterns. In this study, the function of the putative quorum sensing signal synthase gene cqsA (VPA0711 in V. parahaemolyticus strain RIMD2210633 genome) was investigated. The cloning and expression of V. parahaemolyticus cqsA in Escherichia coli system induced the production of a new quorum sensing signal that was found in its culture supernatant. The signal was purified by high performance liquid chromatography methods and determined to be 3-hydroxyundecan- 4-one by indirect and direct mass spectra assays. The deletion of cqsA in RIMD2210633 changed V. parahaemolyticus colony morphology from the classical ‘fried-egg’ shape (thick and opaque in the center, while thin and translucent in the edge) of the wild-type colony to a ‘pancake’ shape (no significant difference between the centre and the edge) of the cqsAdeleted colony. This morphological change could be restored by complementary experiment with cqsA gene or the signal extract. In addition, the expression of opaR, a well-known quorum sensing regulatory gene, could be up-regulated by cqsA deletion. Our results suggested that V. parahaemolyticus used cqsA to produce 3-hydroxyundecan-4-one signal and thereby regulated colony morphology and other quorum sensing-associated behaviors.
Physical and Numerical Investigation of Cavitating Flow-Induced Vibration of a Flexible Hydrofoil
Wu, Qin,Wang, Guoyu,Huang, Biao Korean Society for Fluid machinery 2017 International journal of fluid machinery and syste Vol.10 No.3
The objective of this paper is to investigate the flow-induced vibration of a flexible hydrofoil in cavitating flows via combined experimental and numerical studies. The experiments are presented for the modified NACA66 hydrofoil made of POM Polyacetate in the closed-loop cavitation tunnel and the numerical investigations are performed using a hybrid coupled fluid structure interaction model. The results showed that with the decreasing of cavitation number, the vibration magnitude increases dramatically for the cloud cavitation and declines for the supercavitation. The cloud cavitation development strongly affects the vibration response, with the main frequency of the vibration being accordance with the cavity shedding frequency and other two frequencies corresponding to the bending and twisting frequencies.

To purify and characterize the fibrinogenase with high proteolytic activity from Agkistrodon halys (Chinese) Venom. Monoclonal antibodies against fibrinogenase were prepared and a novel affinity chromatography equipped with a monoclonal antibody against fibrinogenase was developed and applied for the purification of fibrinogenases. The purified fibrinogenase was identified by fibrinolytic activity assay, and antithrombosis activity assay. HPLC chromatography and SDS-PAGE analysis demonstrated the uniformity and purity of the purified fibrinogenase. In comparison with a conventional A-50 chromatography method, affinity-purified fibrinogenase showed higher activity (3631 U mg-1 vs 501 U mg-1). In addition, the physiological activity of the fibrinogenase both in vitro and ex vivo showed the purified fibrinogenase can specifically degrade β-, γ-fibrinogen and has a high anti-thrombotic activity. In conclusion, the purified fibrinogenase by affinity column were shown to be homogeneous and showed a high and specific proteolytic activity against β-chains of fibrinogen molecules and antithrombosis activity.
MiR-421 Regulates Apoptosis of BGC-823 Gastric Cancer Cells by Targeting Caspase-3

MicroRNAs might act as oncogenes or tumor suppressors in cancer. Recent studies have shown that miR-421 is up-regulated in human gastric cancer. Here, we found that miR-421 was over-expressed in gastric cancer tissues and cell lines. Bioinformatics analysis predicted that the caspase-3 gene was a target of miR-421. Caspase-3 was negatively regulated by miR-421 at the post-transcriptional level. Bax and Bcl-2 were also regulated by miR-421. Moreover, tumor necrosis factor receptor-I and -II, death receptors in the apoptosis pathway, were up-regulated by miR-421. The over-expression of miR-421 promoted gastric cancer cell growth and inhibited apoptosis of the BGC-823 gastric cancer cell line. These observations indicate that miR-421 acts as a tumor promoter by targeting the caspase-3 gene and preventing apoptosis of gastric cancer cells through inhibition of caspase-3 expression. These findings contribute to our understanding of the functions of miR-421 in gastric cancer.
