A new approach to the use of rice straw as a difficult-to-recycle agricultural waste was proposed. Potassium aluminosilicate was obtained by spark plasma sintering as an effective material for subsequent immobilization of 137Cs into a solid-state matrix. The sorption properties of potassium aluminosilicate to 137Cs from aqueous solutions were studied. The effect of the synthesis temperature on the phase composition, microstructure, and rate of cesium leaching from samples obtained at 800e1000 C and a pressure of 25 MPa was investigated. It was shown that the positive dynamics of compaction was characteristic of glass ceramics throughout the sintering. Glass ceramics RS-(K,Cs)AlSi3O8 obtained by the SPS method at 1000 C for 5 min was characterized by a high density of ~2.62 g/cm3 , Vickers hardness ~ 2.1 GPa, compressive strength ~231.3 MPa and the rate of cesium ions leaching of ~1.37 107 g cm2 $day1 . The proposed approach makes it possible to safe dispose of rice straw and reduce emissions into the atmosphere of microdisperse amorphous silica, which is formed during its combustion and causes respiratory diseases, including cancer. In addition, the obtained is perspective to solve the problem of recycling long-lived 137Cs radionuclides formed during the operation of nuclear power plants into solid-state matrices.

<P>This work reports the first investigation using the inverse gas chromatography method of a polyimide precursor and the product of its thermal rearrangement (TR polymer), extensively studied earlier. Sorption of gases (CO2, C2H6, C3H8) was studied at the finite dilution regime, while vapors (<I>n</I>-alkanes C7, C8, C10, C14, C16) were investigated at infinite dilution. It was demonstrated that thermal treatment at 450 °C results in a significant increase in the solubility coefficients <I>S</I> for large gas molecules. The absolute values observed for the TR polymer solubility coefficients of solutes are significant and comparable with those for the polymer of intrinsic microporosity (PIM-1), the polymer known by the greatest <I>S</I> values among all of the polymers studied. Sorption thermodynamics in the TR polymer is distinguished by very large and negative mixing parameters: enthalpy <I>h̅</I>1<I>E</I>,∞ and entropy <I>s̅</I>1<I>E</I>,∞.</P><P><B>Graphic Abstract</B> <IMG SRC='http://pubs.acs.org/appl/literatum/publisher/achs/journals/content/iecred/2013/iecred.2013.52.issue-31/ie3034027/production/images/medium/ie-2012-034027_0008.gif'></P><P><A href='http://pubs.acs.org/doi/suppl/10.1021/ie3034027'>ACS Electronic Supporting Info</A></P>

<P>EXO-200 is a single phase liquid xenon detector designed to search for neutrinoless pp decay of Xe-136 to the ground state of Ba-136. We report here on a search for the two -neutrino pp decay of Xe-136 to the first 0+ excited state, 0(1)(+), of Ba-136 based on a 100 kg yr exposure of Xe-136. Using a specialized analysis employing a machine learning algorithm, we obtain a 90% CL half-life sensitivity of 1.7 x 10(24) yr. We find no statistically significant evidence for the 20P decay to the excited state resulting in a lower limit of Ti-1/2(7 nu) (0(+) -> 0(1)(+)) > 6.9 x10(23) yr at 90% CL. This observed limit is consistent with the estimated half-life of 2.5 x 10(25) yr.</P>

In the present study, an original spark plasma sintering-reactive synthesis (SPS-RS) method for minerallike ceramic materials based on SrAl2Si2O8 feldspar-like skeleton structure was used for the first time, promising solid-state matrices for reliable immobilization of high-energy 90Sr. The method is based on the "in-situ" reaction of a mixture of SrO, Al2O3 and SiO2 oxides when heated by a unipolar pulsed current under compacting pressure. The phase and elemental composition structure were studied. The dynamics of the consolidation of the reaction mixture of oxides was studied in the range of 900-1200 ℃. The study found the temperature of the high-speed (minutes) SPS-RS formation of single-phase SrAl2Si2O8 composition ceramic in the absence of intermediate reaction products with a relative density of up to 99.2% and compressive strength up to 145 MPa and a strontium leaching rate of 10-4g/cm2·day.

Albert, J. B.,Barbeau, P. S.,Beck, D.,Belov, V.,Breidenbach, M.,Brunner, T.,Burenkov, A.,Cao, G. F.,Chambers, C.,Cleveland, B.,Coon, M.,Craycraft, A.,Daniels, T.,Danilov, M.,Daugherty, S. J.,Davis, C. American Physical Society 2016 Physical Review D Vol.93 No.7
<P>A search for Lorentz- and CPT-violating signals in the double beta decay spectrum of Xe-136 has been performed using an exposure of 100 kg . yr with the EXO-200 detector. No significant evidence of the spectral modification due to isotropic Lorentz -violation was found, and a two-sided limit of -2.65 x 10(-5) GeV < (a)(of),(,3r) < 7.60 x 10(-6) GeV (90% C.L.) is placed on the relevant coefficient within the Standard -Model Extension (SME). This is the first experimental study of the effect of the SME-defined oscillation -free and momentum-independent neutrino coupling operator on the double beta decay process.</P>

The paper studies spark plasma sintering (SPS) of industrially used UO2-based fuel containing integral fuel burnable absorber (IFBA) of neutrons Gd2O3. Densification dynamics of pristine UO2 powder and the one added with 2 and 8 wt% of Gd2O3 under ultrasonication in liquid has been studied under SPS conditions at 1050, 1250, and 1450 C. Effect of sintering temperature on phase composition as well as on O/U stoichiometry has been investigated for UO2 SPS ceramics. Sintering of uranium dioxide added with Gd2O3 yields solid solution (U,Gd)O2, which is isostructural to UO2. SEM with EDX and metallography were implemented to analyze the microstructure of the obtained UO2 ceramics and composite UO2- Gd2O3 one, particularly, open porosity, defects, and Gd2O3 distribution were studied. Microhardness, compressive strength and density were shown to reduce after addition of Gd2O3. Obtained results prove the hypothesis on formation of stable pores in the system of UO2-Gd2O3 due to Kirkendall effect that reduces sintering efficiency. The paper expands fundamental knowledge on pros and cons of fuel fabrication with IFBA using SPS technology.

<P><B>Abstract</B></P> <P>We report results from a systematic measurement campaign conducted to identify low radioactivity materials for the construction of the EXO-200 double beta decay experiment. Partial results from this campaign have already been reported in a 2008 paper by the EXO collaboration. Here we release the remaining data, collected since 2007, to the public. The data reported were obtained using a variety of analytic techniques. The measurement sensitivities are among the best in the field. Construction of the EXO-200 detector has been concluded, and Phase-I data was taken from 2011 to 2014. The detector’s extremely low background implicitly verifies the measurements and the analysis assumptions made during construction and reported in this paper.</P>

<P>The coherent elastic scattering of neutrinos off nuclei has eluded detection for four decades, even though its predicted cross section is by far the largest of all low-energy neutrino couplings. This mode of interaction offers new opportunities to study neutrino properties and leads to a miniaturization of detector size, with potential technological applications. We observed this process at a 6.7s confidence level, using a low-background, 14.6-kilogram CsI[Na] scintillator exposed to the neutrino emissions from the Spallation Neutron Source at Oak Ridge National Laboratory. Characteristic signatures in energy and time, predicted by the standard model for this process, were observed in high signal-to-background conditions. Improved constraints on nonstandard neutrino interactions with quarks are derived from this initial data set.</P>
