Candidate genes and growth curves for adiposity in African- and European-American youth
Podolsky, R H,Barbeau, P,Kang, H-S,Zhu, H,Treiber, F A,Snieder, H Nature Publishing Group 2007 International Journal of Obesity Vol.31 No.10
Objective:Obesity is associated with multiple health problems and often originates in childhood. This study investigated the association of genes with the development of general and central obesity from childhood into adulthood.Design:Individual growth curves for measures of general adiposity were examined in an 11-year (1987–1998) cohort study. Single-nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) in 11 candidate genes were genotyped.Subjects:Five hundred and twenty-six subjects classified by race (49% African American (AA)), sex (47% male) and socio-economic status (SES).Results:AA female carriers of the 27Glu allele in the ADRB2 gene had a larger waist circumference (P<0.05). Subjects of high SES with the ApoB 4145Lys allele had a larger mean waist circumference than those without this allele (P<0.05). Only in the presence of an adverse environment (low SES) did carriers of the NOS3 298Asp allele have a larger mean body mass index, waist circumference and sum of skinfolds (P<0.05).Conclusion:These results suggest that several polymorphisms are associated with the mean level of adiposity, with the effects depending on other factors such as race, sex and/or SES.International Journal of Obesity (2007) 31, 1491–1499; doi:10.1038/sj.ijo.0803673; published online 10 July 2007

A search for Lorentz- and CPT-violating signals in the double beta decay spectrum of Xe-136 has been performed using an exposure of 100 kg . yr with the EXO-200 detector. No significant evidence of the spectral modification due to isotropic Lorentz -violation was found, and a two-sided limit of -2.65 x 10(-5) GeV < (a)(of),(,3r) < 7.60 x 10(-6) GeV (90% C.L.) is placed on the relevant coefficient within the Standard -Model Extension (SME). This is the first experimental study of the effect of the SME-defined oscillation -free and momentum-independent neutrino coupling operator on the double beta decay process.

EXO-200 is a single phase liquid xenon detector designed to search for neutrinoless pp decay of Xe-136 to the ground state of Ba-136. We report here on a search for the two -neutrino pp decay of Xe-136 to the first 0+ excited state, 0(1)(+), of Ba-136 based on a 100 kg yr exposure of Xe-136. Using a specialized analysis employing a machine learning algorithm, we obtain a 90% CL half-life sensitivity of 1.7 x 10(24) yr. We find no statistically significant evidence for the 20P decay to the excited state resulting in a lower limit of Ti-1/2(7 nu) (0(+) -> 0(1)(+)) > 6.9 x10(23) yr at 90% CL. This observed limit is consistent with the estimated half-life of 2.5 x 10(25) yr.

The coherent elastic scattering of neutrinos off nuclei has eluded detection for four decades, even though its predicted cross section is by far the largest of all low-energy neutrino couplings. This mode of interaction offers new opportunities to study neutrino properties and leads to a miniaturization of detector size, with potential technological applications. We observed this process at a 6.7s confidence level, using a low-background, 14.6-kilogram CsI[Na] scintillator exposed to the neutrino emissions from the Spallation Neutron Source at Oak Ridge National Laboratory. Characteristic signatures in energy and time, predicted by the standard model for this process, were observed in high signal-to-background conditions. Improved constraints on nonstandard neutrino interactions with quarks are derived from this initial data set.

African Americans have a high prevalence rate of type 2 diabetes mellitus (DM). High-maize™ 260 (National Starch and Chemical Co., Bridgewater, NJ, USA) resistant starch (RS) is a promising food ingredient to reduce risk factors for type 2 DM. A 14-week, double-blind, crossover design study was conducted with African American male (n=8) and female (n=7) subjects at risk for type 2 DM. All subjects consumed bread containing 12g of added RS or control bread (no added RS) for 6 weeks, separated by a 2-week washout period. There were no significant differences in the subjects' fasting plasma glucose levels due to the consumption of the RS bread versus the control bread. Fructosamine levels were significantly lower after consumption of both RS and control bread than at baseline. However, we found no significant difference in fructosamine levels due to treatment effects, i.e., RS bread intake versus the control bread. There were no significant differences in insulin or C-reactive protein levels due to treatment, gender, or sequence effects. Mean homeostasis model assessment of insulin resistance decreased to normal values (>2.5) at the end of the 14-week study, although there were no significant treatment effects. The results of this study suggest that African Americans may need to consume more than 12g/day of RS to lower their risk for type 2 DM.
