      • Characteristics of Hodgkin Lymphoma in a Defined Group of Iranian Pediatric Patients

        This study was conducted to describe the characteristics of Hodgkin lymphoma in Iranian children. In a referral center for pediatric oncology (Mofid Hospital) in Tehran, patient data over a 10-year period were retrieved and recorded accordingly. Among 82 cases, 73.2% were male, 26.8% were female, and 70.7% were 5-9 years old. About 40% of patients were in stage III and 42.7% had systemic signs. Cervical nodes were commonly involved (91.5%). The most frequent histological subtype was mixed cellularity. The main hematological features were anemia (47.6%), lymphopenia (20.7%), and eosinophilia (8.7%). Survival rate was 72%, and 8.4% of patients were deceased. A 3% recurrence rate was observed in our patients. A significant relationship was found between the stage of disease and systemic signs (P<0.0005, ${\chi}^2$). Despite diagnosis of Hodgkin lymphoma in many children in Iran being made in higher stages, the mortality rate is relatively low.

        Investigation of Energy Dissipation Rate of Stepped Vertical Overfall (SVO) Spillway Using Physical Modeling and Soft Computing Techniques

        In the present study a physical model of a stepped vertical overfall (SVO) spillway is proposed and designed as a novel combination of a free overfall spillway with horizontal steps. First, the hydraulic design characteristics of the proposed spillway were discussed using a laboratory-scaled model. Effective parameters on the energy dissipation rate were defined as the relative critical depth, Froude number, number of steps, and dimensionless steps’ geometry parameter using dimensional analysis. The energy dissipation rate of the stepped vertical overfall spillway is measured using a waterwheel laboratory setup. Different geometry and hydraulic scenarios were used to assess the energy dissipation rate variation of the proposed spillway. Furthermore, Support Vector Regression and Random Forest Regression methods were used to estimate the energy dissipation of the proposed structure. Investigating the energy dissipation rate of 27 geometry scenarios with the available range of discharge revealed that the energy dissipation rate against the water’s relative depth inside the SVO spillway follows a gradually increasing trend ranging between 88.53% to 98.06%. Also, random forest regression algorithm showed more accurate prediction performance than support vector regression approach with RMSE = 0.128 and R2 = 0.99 in training stage and RMSE = 0.115 and R2 = 0.99 in testing stage. The support vector regression model estimated the proposed spillway’s energy dissipation rate with an accuracy of RMSE = 0.67 and R2 = 0.88 in training stage and RMSE = 0.61 and R2 = 0.9 in testing stage.

        A New Method for Developing Seismic Collapse Fragility Curves Grounded on State-Based Philosophy

        Since the current process to achieve the collapse fragility curve in practical applications seems too complicated, also time-consuming to dominant by structure designers, the focus of this study is on introducing of a new approach for establishing collapse fragility curves which requires less analytical effort. To achieve this goal, state-based philosophy (SBP) has been taken into consideration. This theory benefits from some similarities in the nature of every failure process in solid mechanics regardless of its source. In this study these similarities are used intelligently in procedure of formulating new fragility function which has couple of unknown parameters. Next, it will be shown that these parameters can be attained from two different sources: the pushover curves of the structure, some selective damage data from incremental dynamic analysis analyses. Finally a complete form of new collapse fragility function which is called "SBP fragility function" proposed as a substitute for conventional collapse fragility function. The most important advantage of this new fragility function is its non-probabilistic structure that will make a huge difference in the amount of effort required to achieve the fragility curves. In this research, in order to ensure the efficiency, accuracy of this fragility function all steps of SBP fragility analyses are done on some special moment frames models, their results are presented.

        Seismic Fragility Functions Grounded on State-Based Philosophy: Application to Low to Midrise Steel Frame Buildings

        In this study, a new formulation for structural fragility function based on the theory of state-based philosophy (SBP) is introduced. In this innovative approach, gradual changes in stiffness (or flexibility) of the structure is considered as a firm base for describing changes in the state of the structure due to damage from various sources. In this study, the source of damage data is considered ground motions. After formulating state changes by using SBP theory, a new fragility function is proposed. Therefore, this new function is based on observations of various failure stages of the structure and, besides, it is organized specifically for the structural damage data. In order to prove the accuracy of this method, some special moment frames (SMFs) are modeled, and incremental dynamic analysis (IDA) is performed on them. Thus damage data are provided as initial input to the fragility function. After that, the final results of the SBP fragility function are compared with the results of the conventional methods of plotting the fragility curve, and lastly, the fragility curve's accuracy obtained by using this new function is verified. This new fragility function is called ‘SBP fragility function’ and has some advantages over the ordinary fragility functions, which are discussed in this article.

        Scalloped border as a possible diagnostic aid for differentiating jaw lesions: A pictorial essay

        Purpose: The aim of this study was to introduce a category of jaw lesions comprising cysts and tumors associated with scalloped borders. Materials and Methods: General search engines and specialized databases including Google Scholar, PubMed, PubMed Central, and Scopus, as well as an authoritative textbook, were used to find relevant studies by using keywords such as “jaw lesion,” “jaw disease,” “scalloping,” “scalloped border,” “scalloped margin,” “irregular border,” and “irregular margin.” Out of 289 articles, 252 records were removed because they were duplicates, did not have a relevant title, or did not mention the frequency of findings described using the term “scalloped border.” Finally, 37 closely related articles were chosen. Results: According to the relevant literature, scalloped borders are found most frequently in ameloblastoma, followed by simple bone cyst, central giant cell granuloma, odontogenic keratocyst, and glandular odontogenic cyst. Conclusion: The lesions most frequently reported to have scalloped borders are ameloblastoma, central giant cell granuloma, odontogenic keratocyst, simple bone cyst, and glandular odontogenic cyst.

        Effect of Synbiotic on the Treatment of Jaundice in Full Term Neonates: A Randomized Clinical Trial

        Purpose: Jaundice accounts for most hospital admissions in the neonatal period. Nowadays, in addition to phototherapy, other auxiliary methods are used to reduce jaundice and the length of hospitalization. This study aimed to investigate the effect of probiotics on the treatment of hyper-bilirubinemia in full-term neonates. Methods: In this randomized clinical trial, 83 full-term neonates, who were admitted to the hospital to receive phototherapy in the first 6 months of 2015, were randomly divided into two groups: synbiotic (SG, n=40) and control (CG, n=43). Both groups received phototherapy but the SG also received 5 drops/day of synbiotics. Serum bilirubin, urine, stool, feeding frequency, and weight were measured daily until hospital discharge. A p-value<0.05 was considered statistically significant. Results: The mean total serum bilirubin in the SG was lower than that in the CG ($9.38{\pm}2.37$ and $11.17{\pm}2.60mg/dL$, respectively). The urine and stool frequency in the SG was significantly higher than that in the CG (p<0.05). The duration of hospitalization in the SG was shorter than that in the CG. Conclusion: Use of synbiotics as an adjuvant therapy had a significant treatment effect on jaundice in full-term neonates. Further studies including larger samples with long follow-up periods are essential to confirm the benefits of routine use of synbiotics in neonatal patients with jaundice.

        Common conditions associated with displacement of the inferior alveolar nerve canal: A radiographic diagnostic aid

        Purpose: This study reviewed the common conditions associated with displacement of inferior alveolar nerve canal. Materials and Methods: General search engines and specialized databases including Google Scholar, Pub Med, Pub Med Central, Science Direct, and Scopus were used to find relevant studies by using keywords such as "mandibular canal", "alveolar canal", "inferior alveolar nerve canal", "inferior dental canal", "inferior mandibular canal" and "displacement". Results: About 120 articles were found, of which approximately 70 were broadly relevant to the topic. We ultimately included 37 articles that were closely related to the topic of interest. When the data were compiled, the following 8 lesions were found to have a relationship with displacement of mandibular canal: radicular/residual cysts, dentigerous cyst, odontogenic keratocyst, aneurysmal bone cyst, ameloblastoma, central giant cell granuloma, fibrous dysplasis, and cementossifying fibroma. Conclusion: When clinicians encounter a lesion associated with displaced mandibular canal, they should first consider these entities in the differential diagnosis. This review would help dentists make more accurate diagnoses and develop better treatment plans according to patients' radiographs.

        Radiolucent rim as a possible diagnostic aid for differentiating jaw lesions

        In this study, we formulate a new proposal that complements previous classifications in order to assist dental practitioners in performing a differential diagnosis based on patients' radiographs. We used general search engines and specialized databases such as Google Scholar, PubMed, PubMed Central, MedLine Plus, Science Direct, Scopus, and well-recognized textbooks to find relevant studies by using keywords such as "jaw disease," "jaw lesions," "radiolucent rim," "radiolucent border," and "radiolucent halo." More than 200 articles were found, of which 70 were broadly relevant to the topic. We ultimately included 50 articles that were closely related to the topic of interest. When the relevant data were compiled, the following eight lesions were identified as having a radiolucent rim: periapical cemento-osseous dysplasia, focal cemento-osseous dysplasia, florid cemento-osseous dysplasia, cemento-ossifying fibroma, osteoid osteoma, osteoblastoma, odontoma, and cementoblastoma. We propose a novel subcategory, jaw lesions with a radiolucent rim, which includes eight entities. The implementation of this new category can help improve the diagnoses that dental practitioners make based on patients' radiographs.

        Common conditions associated with mandibular canal widening: A literature review

        Purpose: The aim of this study was to review the common conditions associated with mandibular canal widening. Materials and Methods: General search engines and specialized databases including Google Scholar, PubMed, PubMed Central, Science Direct, and Scopus were used to find relevant studies by using the following keywords: "mandibular canal," "alveolar canal," "inferior alveolar nerve canal," "inferior dental canal," "inferior mandibular canal," "widening," "enlargement," "distension," "expansion," and "dilation." Results: In total, 130 articles were found, of which 80 were broadly relevant to the topic. We ultimately included 38 articles that were closely related to the topic of interest. When the data were compiled, the following 7 lesions were found to have a relationship with mandibular canal widening: non-Hodgkin lymphoma, osteosarcoma, schwannoma, neurofibroma, vascular malformation/hemangioma, multiple endocrine neoplasia syndromes, and perineural spreading or invasion. Conclusion: When clinicians encounter a lesion associated with mandibular canal widening, they should immediately consider these entities in the differential diagnosis. Doing so will help dentists make more accurate diagnoses and develop better treatment plans based on patients' radiographs.
