        Spatio-Temporal Variability of SummerMonsoon Onset over Pakistan

        Pakistan receives huge amount of rainfall during summer monsoon season that provides water replenishment for transition periods, helps in maintaining natural and anthropogenic ecosystems, and increased crop productivity. In this changing world, shifts in summer monsoon onset in Pakistan have been observed that seems to affect the society in general. Therefore, it is vital to address these summer monsoon onset shifts to help policy makings and implementation. The study was carried out to analyse the spatio-temporal variability in summer monsoon onset in four objectively defined regions covering all Pakistan. A total of 35 meteorological stations spreading over four regions (i.e., northern, central east, central west, and southern) were taken in to account and shifts in summer monsoon onset have been calculated for the period of 1971–2010. The analysis is based on the observational data of daily precipitation from 20th Jun-20th July for 40 years. The onset for each year and mean onset for each decade has been calculated for all stations. The data was analysed for homogeneity, spatial and temporal variability of monsoon rainfall has been calculated for all four regions, and station wise monsoon onset has been discussed in detail. The temporal analysis shows that the onset of monsoon has shift towards earlier onset from first week of July to last week of June at most of the stations in which the investigation was carried out during the studied period. The spatial analysis shows that the amount of monsoon precipitation during the onset period has decreased after 1970’s in almost all regions. This variability in monsoon onset can have major impacts on rain fed agriculture and cultivation of crops like maize, soybean, rice and sugarcane etc. and will have to revisit the cropping calendar.

        Bone whitlockite: synthesis, applications, and future prospects

        Bone whitlockite (WH) exists in the collagen matrix along with hydroxyapatite (HA) and plays a vital role during earlier stages of bone development. It is present in short-range order and is diffi cult to identify in the bone, as compared to HA mineral, that covers 80% of the bone inorganic phase. It has the same structural analogy with β-TCP, but detailed structural and crystallographic analyses of bone have shown that β-tricalcium phosphate (β-TCP) is merely a synthetic analog of bone whitlockite, having the same crystalline structure but diff erent chemically. WH contains magnesium at Ca(IV), Ca(V) positions, and HPO 4 2− on a threefold axis in a rhombohedral crystal lattice. Its biocompatibility, functionality, negative surface charge, mechanical strength, and stability in physiological solvents make it an ideal bone substitute as compared to hydroxyapatite (HA) and β-TCP. It has magnesium as a major component that has a strong affi nity with integrin protein. Integrin protein plays a vital role in bone tissue integration. It is bioresorbable and biodegradable and the rate of degradation complements with regeneration. However, despite these excellent properties, this material has always been overshadowed by other calcium phosphates (CaPs), because it is diffi cult to synthesize. In this review article, we present a comprehensive study on the diff erence in the crystalline structure of bone whitlockite and β-TCP, its presence in the natural system, and conditions under which its nucleation occurs in native bone and at lab scale. Furthermore, the reaction conditions that favor homogenous precipitation of synthetic WH and the role of magnesium in the stabilization of diff erent CaPs to obtain pure WH phase are also discussed. Finally, the applications of WH in biomedical and for heavy metal adsorption are summarized.

        Properties, assembly and characterization of carbon nanotubes: their application in water purification, environmental pollution control and biomedicines—a comprehensive review

        Owing to their simplicity and ease of synthesis, carbon nanotubes (CNTs) have captivated attention of researchers. Many engineering applications have investigated the new features of nanostructured carbon nanotubes, such as large surface area, stiffness and durability. CNTs have opened up new opportunities for environmental improvement, pollution management and application in a variety of fields. Multiple types of pollution are produced as a result of population growth, urbanization and industrialization. CNTs are used to solve a variety of challenges, including environmental difficulties, water pollution, biomedical applications, and so on. It becomes an unavoidable present and future material. Different applications of CNTs have been presented in this review paper. CNTs are potential material having number of uses, including water purification, drug delivery, preservatives, catalysis, genetic engineering and artificial implants which are reviewed in this review article. This paper is presenting an explicit and systematic progress of CNTs for water treatment, medicinal uses drug delivery, artificial implants and so on, and a multitude of CNT applications in broad disciplines and their purification methods have been covered. The issues related to synthesis technologies, purification technology, bio-medicinal application and catalytic property of CNTs within the framework of different engineering applications and environmental impact are discussed in this study.
