        Photonic Crystal Nanocavities for E cient Light Con nement and Emission

        When combined with high index contrast slabs in which light can be efficiently guided, microfabricated two-dimensional photonic crystals provide us with the geometries needed to confine and concentrate light into extremely small volumes and to obtain very high field intensities. Fabrication of optical structures has now evolved to a precision which allows us to control light within such etched nanostructures. Sub-wavelength nano-optic cavities can be designed for efficient and flexible control over both emission wavelength and frequency, and nanofabricated optical waveguides can be used for efficient coupling of light between devices. The substantial reduction of the size of optical components leads to their integration in large numbers and the possibility to combine different functionalities on a single chip, much in the same way as electronic components have been integrated for improved multi-functionality of microchips. Here we describe the use of microfabricated periodic structures, photonic crystals, to define functional nano-optic cavities for efficient confinement and emission of light, which leads to the desire for miniaturization of optical devices.

        Fabrication of a tungsten master stamp using self-ordered porous alumina

        <P>We describe the preparation of a tungsten pillar nanoimprint stamp without the use of lithography and etching techniques. Structures with heights of 15 nm were prepared on the basis of self-ordered porous alumina templates and this was followed by DC sputtering of tungsten. The stamp was successfully used to prepare an aluminium surface to obtain highly ordered porous anodic alumina films after a single anodization step. The preparation efficiency for highly ordered porous alumina was dramatically improved as compared to the more conventional two-step anodization–strip-anodization method, as a sacrificial layer with a thickness of a few hundred micrometres was not required. In addition, by fractal calculations, we have evaluated the degree of ordering of the asperities on the nanoimprint master stamp. </P>

        Where Does It Lead? Imaging Features of Cardiovascular Implantable Electronic Devices on Chest Radiograph and CT

        Pacemakers and implantable cardioverter defibrillators (ICDs) are being increasingly employed in patients suffering from cardiac rhythm disturbances. The principal objective of this article is to familiarize radiologists with pacemakers and ICDs on chest radiographs and CT scans. Therefore, the preferred lead positions according to pacemaker types and anatomic variants are introduced in this study. Additionally, the imaging features of incorrect lead positions and defects, as well as complications subsequent to pacemaker implantation are demonstrated herein.
