According to axial profile of solid concentration, the cocurrent upward three-phase reactors with liquid as continuous phase can be classified into three types: (a) gas-sparged slurry reactors, (b) three-phase bubble columns, and (c) three-phase fluidized beds. Comparative study shows that the gas hold up, bubble characteristics and mass transfer are significantly dependent on the type of three-phase reactors. Three types of reactors exhibit the different hydrodynamic and transport behaviors with particle size, solid concentration and gas holdup. The structural analysis of the axial solid distribution indicates the bubble and bubble wake dynamics are the key factors to the hydrodynamic and transport behaviors of three-phase reactors.

We investigated the possible association between genetic polymorphisms in the dopamine receptor and serotonin transporter genes and the responses of schizophrenic patients treated with either risperidone or perospirone. The subjects comprised 27 patients with schizophrenia who were clinically evaluated both before and after treatment. The genotyping of the polymorphisms of the dopamine D2 receptor gene (DRD2) (rs1801028 and rs6277), the dopamine D4 receptor gene (DRD4) (120-bp tandem repeats and rs1800955), and serotonin transporter gene (5HTT)(variable number of tandem repeats; VNTR) were performed using the real-time polymerase chain reaction and sequencing. In DRD2 and 5HTT-VNTR, there were no significant correlations between clinical response and polymorphism in the case of risperidone, and for perospirone treatment it was impossible to analyze the clinical evaluation due to the absence of genotype information. On the other hand, in DRD4 there were significant correlations in the two-factor interaction effect on the Positive and Negative Syndrome Scale (PANSS) between the two drugs [120-bp tandem repeat, p=0.003; rs1800955, p=0.043]. Although the small sample represents a serious limitation, these results suggest that variants in DRD4 are a predictor of whether treatment will be more effective with risperidone or with perospirone in individual patients. Corrosion Behavior of Zn and Zn-Al Alloy Coated Steels under Cyclic Wet-dry Environments

Atmospheric corrosion behaviors of Zn, Zn-5%Al and Zn-55%Al coated steels have been investigated under cyclic wet-dry environments containing chloride ions. The wet-dry cycle was camed out by alternate exposure to immersion in 0.5 M (or 0.05 M) NaCl solutions and dring at 25℃ and 60 %RH. The polarization resistance R_p and solution resistance R_s, were monitored by AC impedance technique. From the obtained I/(R_p), and I/(R_s), values, the corrosion rate of the coatings and the Time of Wetness (TOW) were estimated, respectively. Effects of chloride ions and TOW on the corrosion rates of Zn, Zn-5%Al, Zn-55%Al coatings and amearance of red rust (onset of underlying steel corrosion) under wet-dry cycles are discussed on the basis of the corrosion monitoring data.
Influences of Nano Particle Addition on Hydrodynamics and Heat Transfer in Gas–Solid Fluidized Beds

<P>Nano particles (7 nm TiO<SUB>2</SUB>) added coarse particle (100 μm Al<SUB>2</SUB>O<SUB>3</SUB>) fluidization was carried out in a 2-D column. Influences of nano particle addition on hydrodynamics and heat transfer in gas–solid fluidized beds were investigated. The flow behavior and heat transfer were evaluated with Kolmogorov entropy (<I>K</I>) of the pressure fluctuation and heat transfer coefficient (<I>h</I>), respectively. It was found that <I>K</I> is drastically increased as the ratio of nano particle addition increased, whereas <I>h</I> is exponentially decreased in accordance with the unstable flow behaviors. From SEM images, the sizes of nano agglomerates fragmented and the nano agglomerates on the surface of coarse particle were observed. The flow regimes with the variation of nano particle ratio were classified into a fragmented agglomerate flow and a surface dispersed agglomerate flow. It was also found that the agglomerate film around the surface of heater and coarse particles acted as a dominant resistance source of the heat transfer.</P>

Objective: Recent molecular and genetic investigations have suggested that the current nosology for major psychiatric disorders, based on the “two-entities-principal” is not accurate with respect to clinical observations; patient groups that do not fit to the current operative diagnostic boundaries are readily identified. We aimed to perform an investigation of the signal transducer and activator of transcription 6 (STAT6) gene (located on 12q13), which has an important role in the apoptotic cascade, with patients suffering from periodic psychosis. Methods: Genetic association study has been employed for the current work. Investigated six tag-SNPs were chosen from Hapmap database. Results: Among six tag-SNPs, one marker (rs10783813), located in the STAT6 gene, showed modest association (p<0.05), although no marker or haplotype block showed association after Bonferroni’s correction. Conclusion: Future studies will reveal the etiological role of STAT6, and of other genes of the apoptotic cascade, in major psychiatric disorders. Catalytic effects of potassium on lignin steam gasification with γ-Al2O3 as a bed material

The effects of potassium on the reactivity of biomass-char steam gasification with the presence of a porous material were investigated by using a thermogravimetric reactor with high-heating rates. Lignin was employed as a char-rich biomass model compound. The potassium carbonate (K2CO3) was added to lignin and a mixture of lignin and γ-Al2O3 porous particles by means of aqueous impregnation. The effects of K2CO3 and γ-Al2O3 addition on pyrolysis of lignin and steam gasification of lignin-derived char were evaluated in terms of lignin conversion and the gaseous products. Results showed that K2CO3 slightly increased the steam gasification rate of lignin-derived char, but it did not influence the conversion in both the pyrolysis and steam gasification steps. In addition, tar was reduced by adding K2CO3 because of the increment of carbon conversion to gas product. The presence of γ-Al2O3 was found to induce the lower reactivity of resulting char after pyrolysis, reducing the gasification rate and conversion. A significant improvement in gasification conversion was observed with the presence of both K2CO3 and γ-Al2O3. Especially, almost complete gasification was achieved at a reaction temperature of 1,073 K.

Rapid expansion of supercritical solution (RESS) was used for preparing polymer particles and polymer coating of ultra fine powders. The polymer of pharmaceutical interest was Poly(lactic-co-glycolic acid) (PLGA with PLA : PGA ratio of 85 : 15 and MW of 50,000-75,000) and the simulated core particles were 1.4-μm SiO2 and 70- nm TiO2 particles. The supercritical solution was prepared by dissolving PLGA in supercritical carbon dioxide with ethanol as a cosolvent. Supercritical solution of CO2-PLGA was sprayed through capillary nozzles to ambient conditions, resulting in formation of submicron PLGA particles. Similarly, rapid expansion of supercritical solution of CO2- PLGA suspended with the core particles could provide solvent evaporation and deposition of submicron PLGA particles on the surface of the core particles, resulting in the formation of coating films on dispersed particles of SiO2 and agglomerates of TiO2. The influences of the core particle size, spray nozzle diameter as well as powder-to-polymer weight ratio were also investigated and discussed with respect to the coating performance

ObjectiveaaElectroconvulsive therapy (ECT) is a reasonable option for intractable depression or schizophrenia, but a mechanism of action has not been established. One credible hypothesis is related to neural plasticity. Three genes (Oct4, Sox2, c-Myc) involved in the induction of induced pluripotent stem (iPS) cells are Wnt-target genes, which constitute a key gene group involved in neural plasticity through the TCF family. Klf4 is the other gene among Yamanaka’s four transcription factors, and increases in its expression are induced by stimulation of the canonical Wnt pathway. MethodsaaWe compared the peripheral blood gene expression of the four iPS genes (Oct4, Sox2, c-Myc, and Klf4) before and after modified ECT (specifically ECT with general anesthesia) of patients with intractable depression (n=6) or schizophrenia (n=6). Using Thymatron ten times the total bilateral electrical stimulation was evoked. ResultsaaBoth assessments of the symptoms demonstrated significant improvement after mECT stimulation. Expression of all four genes was confirmed to increase after initial stimulation. The gene expression levels after treatment were significantly different from the initial gene expression in all twelve cases at the following treatment stages: at the 3rd mECT for Oct4; at the 6th and 10th mECT for Sox2; and at the 3rd, 6th and 10th mECT for c-Myc. ConclusionaaThese significant differences were not present after correction for multiple testing; however, our data have the potential to explain the molecular mechanisms of mECT from a unique perspective. Further studie should be conducted to clarify the pathophysiological involvement of iPS-inducing genes in ECT.
